2017 Stony Brook Football 3

A FAMILY AFFAIRStony Brook RBs Stacey Bedell and Jordan Gowins share more than just the carries out of the backfield, the two are second cousins. Bedell, a senior from Mastic Beach, N.Y., and Gowins, a junior transfer from Bellport, N.Y., have family blood running through their veins. The duo completed their first season together in 2016 with a combined 283 carries for 1,206 yards and 12 touchdowns and in 2017 have combined to gain 777 yards on 149 carries with seven touchdowns.

IN THE CHARTSRB Stacey Bedell enters the Richmond game ranked among the top five in several of Stony Brook’s career rushing records. He sits second in career 100 yard games (14), second in career touchdowns (29), third in career rushing yards (2,703) and third in career carries (501).

DB Synceir Malone picked up his first career start against Delaware in week six.

FIRST TIMERSTen Seawolves saw their first collegiate action in the opener at USF: DB Augie Contressa, LB EJ Fineran, TE Zach Lucas, DB Justin Burns, DS Billy Barber, CB TJ Morrison, DL Brandon Lopez, DL Odean Gilzene, DL Tahriq Gordon and WR Seba Nekhet. PK Nick Courtney saw his first game action in the win over UNH.

BLOCK AND TOUCHDOWNStony Brook’s special teams have blocked five punts for touchdowns in the past 20 games, including two this season. The Seawolves accomplished this at USF in the season opener and against in the home victory against Sacred Heart. The Seawolves also blocked a punt and scored at Rhode Island in 2015 and against North Dakota and William & Mary last season.

CARBONE’S CAREER GAMESStony Brook junior QB Joe Carbone set career-highs in passing on four different weeks this season. He tossed what was his career-high 190 yards in the win at Rhode Island on Sept. 9. He followed that up the next week with a career-best three touchdowns passing in the victory over Sacred Heart and against Towson he once again set his career-high in passing yards with 242 in the win. Carbone then tossed for 272 yards against Delaware to set his new career best.

BOLDEN BESTS HIS CAREER HIGHSenior WR Ray Bolden surpassed his career-high in receiving yards three already this season. The Euless, Texas, native hauled in 121 yards receiving at Rhode Island and then did one better with 125 yards against Towson. He then collected 136 receiving yards against Delaware.

LIOTINE MAKES HISTORY, TWICEJunior RB Donald Liotine made history twice in the victory at William & Mary on Sept. 30. State on Sept. 1, 2012. Liotine scored on a nine-yard run and a 61-yard pass in the victory. His 61-yard pass from QB Joe Carbone was also the longest pass for a touchdown since Adrian Coxson pulled down an 83-yard TD from Conor Bednarski vs. W&M on Sept. 27, 2014.

Since becoming Stony Brook’s head football coach in the spring of 2006, Chuck Priore’s tenure can be described as an usher. He’s ushered the Seawolves through two conferences (Northeast and Big South), and for the past three seasons, CAA Football. During that time, Priore has ushered the program to the upper echelon of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), guiding SBU from 20 scholarships to a fully-funded program of 63 scholarship, the maximum allowed at the FCS level.

Under Priore’s leadership, Stony Brook posted a number of firsts - a win over a Football Bowl Subdivision (Army), a 10-win season, an at-large berth to the Division I Football Championship and produced the Seawolves first NFL player when Will Tye joined the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent and enjoyed a very successful rookie campaign.

In Priore’s previous 11 seasons at the helm of the Seawolves, SBU has collected at least five wins, including that 10-win season in 2012 and a nine-win season in 2011.

In 2016, Priore’s 11th at the helm of the Seawolves, Stony Brook posted a 5-6 mark, including four CAA Football wins. The Seawolves opened the season with a thrilling home victory over No. 19 North Dakota and followed it two weeks later with a commanding victory over second-ranked and defending CAA Footbal champion Richmond in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

In 2015, the Seawolves posted a 5-5 record and went 3-5 in the CAA, including a 31-6 victory at home over No. 13 New Hampshire, the highest ranked opponent Stony Brook has even beaten. Priore’s squad had to overcome numerous injuries to reach .500, but were highlighted by the CAA’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year and All-America DE Victor Ochi. Ochi anchored the SBU defense that ranked first in the FBC is yards allowed with 250.1 and once again among the nation’s best in scoring defense.

During the 2015 season, Priore reached the 100 career wins milestone as a head coach. Stony Brook defeated Rhode Island, 19-7, in Kingston on Nov. 14 to accomplish the feat.

The 2014 season once again featued five victories that included wins on the road at Towson and Elon. The Seawolves also claimed four wins in the CAA to finish the top half of the conference. Stony Brook was led by All-America selection Christian Richard that solidified a defensive unit the ranked among the FCS’ best in yards and points allowed. RB Stacey Bedell, TE Will Tye and WR Adrian Coxson anchored the offense. Bedell rushed for over 1000 yards and nine scores, while Tye pulled down five touchdowns and Coxson had six TDs and over 600 receiving yards.

In 2013 Stony Brook, which won five games for an ninth straight season, went 3-5 in its first season in the CAA, including wins over No. 25 James Madison and in-state rival Albany.

Priore ushered Stony Brook to the upper echelon of Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). In 2012, the Seawolves hosted and won a playoff game and advanced to the second round of the Division I Football Championship.

The season featured a number of milestones - Stony Brook beat Army, 23-3, for its first win over an FBS program; Miguel Maysonet finished as the runner-up for the Walter Payton Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding player, was named to a program-record seven All-America Teams and became the first SBU football player to be invited to the NFL Combine.

Stony Brook, which won a program-best 10 wins, moved to the Colonial Athletic Association, considered the “SEC” of FCS football.

For his efforts, Priore was named AFCA Regional Co-Coach of the year, and earned a contract extension through the 2020 season.
