May is Asian/Pacific American HeritageMonth – a celebration of Asians and PacificIslanders in the United States. A ratherbroad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses allof the Asian continent and the Pacificislands of Melanesia (New Guinea, NewCaledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the SolomonIslands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam,Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands,Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States ofMicronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand,Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands,Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu,Cook Islands, French Polynesia and EasterIsland).

Like most commemorative months,Asian/Pacific American Heritage Monthoriginated with Congress. In 1977 Reps.Frank Horton of New York introducedHouse Joint Resolution 540 to proclaim thefirst ten days in May as Pacific/AsianAmerican Heritage Week. In the same year,Senator Daniel Inouye introduced a similarresolution, Senate Joint Resolution 72.Neither of these resolutions passed, so inJune 1978, Rep. Horton introduced HouseJoint Resolution 1007. This resolutionproposed that the President should“proclaim a week, which is to include theseventh and tenth of the month, during thefirst ten days in May of 1979 as ‘Asian/PacificAmerican Heritage Week.’” This jointresolution was passed by the House and

then the Senate and was signed byPresident Jimmy Carter on October 5, 1978to become Public Law 95-419 (PDF, 158kb).This law amended the original language ofthe bill and directed the President to issue aproclamation for the “7 day periodbeginning on May 4, 1979 as ‘Asian/PacificAmerican Heritage Week.’” During the nextdecade, presidents passed annualproclamations for Asian/Pacific AmericanHeritage Week until 1990 when Congresspassed Public Law 101-283 (PDF, 166kb)which expanded the observance to amonth for 1990. Then in 1992, Congresspassed Public Law 102-450 (PDF, 285kb)which annually designated May asAsian/Pacific American Heritage Month.

Please Charge Chromebooks NightlyWe have noticed that many students’chromebooks are losing charge midday. Please designate a place in your home foryour child’s chromebook charger. Build aroutine each afternoon when your studentarrives home from school or finishes virtuallearning for the day to plug in thechromebook. A nightly charge to thechromebook will last your student for thenext day of instruction. Each classroom hasa limited number of spare chargers should achild’s chromebook lose power during theday, but it is least disruptive to your child’slearning experience if they have a fullycharged chromebook each morning.Thank you for supporting your child withthis habit!

School Wide PBIS VirtualWe are entering our fourth year as a PBISschool. The committee has worked hardover the summer to refine our positivesupports for students. Our Expectations are:✔ Be Respectful✔ Be Responsible✔ Be Committed✔ Be Safe

You will continue to learn more about PBISupgrades during Pre-service.

Positive Behavior Interventions andSupports (PBIS) is a proactive approach toestablishing the behavioral supports andsocial culture needed for all students in aschool to achieve social, emotional andacademic success. Attention is focused oncreating and sustaining primary(school-wide), secondary (classroom), andtertiary (individual) systems of support thatimprove lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all youthby making targeted misbehavior lesseffective, efficient, and relevant, and desiredbehavior more functional.

While advanced strategies to addressdiscipline are at the forefront of PBIS in thebrick and mortar school building, relationships will be the focus duringdistance learning. Across the first semester,PBIS will be used to develop strongrelationships, connections, and support atStonegate. Allowing for every student tomake a trusting connection with at least oneadult. This will help foster resiliency, andself-efficacy during this new time of virtuallearning. Upon return to the brick andmortar school building PBIS will return to itssystem of proactive strategies to define, teach, and support appropriate studentbehavior.

Clothing To Cash Recycling Program

Clothing to Cash® is a program that collectsNew and Used Clothing, Shoes, Sheets,Towels, (all Textiles) and pays the school 10cents for every pound collected.  Theprogram is operated entirely OUTSIDE andwill be located in the school parking lot, where students, parents, staff and thecommunity can drop off items throughoutthe year.  They have state of the art photoquantity sensors installed in each bin thatreport 3 times daily to prevent overflow andallow the company to schedule service asneeded (no other companies use thistechnology). They empty the collection bin, weigh the contents to determine our schoolearnings and pays our school monthly. Theaverage school (500 - 1000 students) willearn $1000- $2000 yearly if each studentwould donate just one 13-gallon kitchen sizetrash bag yearly!! Add in parents, siblings, relatives, neighbors, and staff andStonegate’s earnings could really increase.
