Anyone for Co Co?

Compassionate Communities (Co Co) schemes provide a befriending service for folk who live alone and may feel they have become rather cut off from the community they were part of due to frailty, being housebound or living with a long-term illness.

They may already have various forms of help going into their home via health professionals or other agencies, but these visits are of necessity usually rather brief and functional.

Many people say they would appreciate someone to talk to, someone with time to listen. A Co Co volunteer could provide this companionship by regular visiting on a weekly basis. Volunteers are trained and DBS checked, and wherever possible share some interests with their client. They do not provide personal care, but rather companionship and a willingness to help the person to live their lives more fully in ways appropriate to them.

Hodnet Co Co aims to serve the area covered by the Medical Practice, which extends beyond Hodnet itself into outlying rural areas and villages. We receive referrals through the Practice, via other agencies where our publicity is displayed or through individuals making contact with us themselves. You can find out more by ringing us on: 07849 835687 or by looking at our page on the village website: https://hodnet.org.uk/coco

We look forward to hearing from you.

Eaton upon Tern Community Champions

Firstly, we would like to say a very big thank you to Sally Webber who has been the committee secretary since we began way back in 2014, but due to moving home Sally has now stepped down. Both Sally & Martin will be missed very much but we do hope that they will continue to come along to our community events as they haven’t gone too far.

June 27th saw us meeting at Cherwell House for our Annual General Meeting. Reports were given by the Chairman & Treasurer and the minutes of the 2018 AGM were adopted. Attendance wasn’t as good as previous years, but this didn’t hinder a lively discussion from all present on local concerns, predominantly being traffic related. Many thanks to Janet & Nigel for hosting.

Saturday July 20th saw many of the villagers (adults, children and four-legged friends) gather at Eaton Grange to celebrate the start of the summer holidays with our “Bring & Share Picnic Games Afternoon”. A fabulous time was had by all and a wonderful spread was generously supplied by everyone and even the weather was kind to us. Many thanks to Emma & Gary for hosting.

Finally, a date for the diary!! Our annual Autumn Village Clean will take place on Sunday October 20th, more details of which will be shared closer to the time.

Heathcote Community Champions

Following an approach to the Parish Council the Heathcote Champions are in discussion with the School about helping maintain their Conservation Area in support of their Forest School programme. This would include scrub clearance, footpath strimming and maybe some additional planting at the back end of this year.

Anyone in the Heathcote area is welcome to join the group and come along to an

informal meeting on Thursday 5th September at 6.30pm

at Hope House, Sandy Lane. Please ring Sue on 638348 if you're interested.

Unfortunately, the Treasure Hunt in June was cancelled due to a lack of people applying to attend, but perhaps if we have a mild autumn, we could consider holding it then.

The Millennium Tapestry

The idea for a tapestry came from a Committee, formed to celebrate the millennium in 2000, which was made up of members of the local community and the parish council.

The tapestry was designed by Vicky Hamblin, who took features from throughout the parish and incorporated them in the design.

The stitching was started by twin sisters Miriam Waters (who sadly passed away recently) and Myra Bennett. Myra took it into Stoke upon Tern primary school where she worked, for pupils, teachers, parents and visitors to put in a few stitches of their own.

After a time, it was brought back for Miriam and Myra to finish.

It hangs in St. Peter's Church, Stoke upon Tern for all to see and a photographic copy hangs in the school.

It can be viewed in the church every Sunday – Service time is 11am - 12 noon.

Wistanswick Fete

Wistanswick Fete was a great success in June, despite the extreme

hot weather on the day, with new attractions including a craft

marquee and beer tent.

The Horse and Dog Shows were popular as ever and there were

many contributions to the Craft & Produce Show, which this year

had its own separate marquee.

We raised about £2,000 for the upkeep of the Institute - thank you

to everyone who helped out and those who donated the splendid

raffle prizes – and those who turned up to support us - look out for

details of next year’s 100th Wistanswick Fete!

Garden and Produce Update

Congratulations to you all for doing us proud and showing off your talents to the full. From jams to sculptures, radishes to pin cushions, recycled materials to wellie boots, we had it all. Preparing for the show starts at least six months before and the first challenge is deciding on the entries, particularly when the date is brought forward to June. What is likely to be ready for harvesting in June? Not a lot but you did not let us down and the flowers and vegetables came in to give a worthy display. The produce had our mouths watering with the tantalising smell of home baked bread, crisp, golden shortbread and delicious jams and chutneys. Recycled items had us guessing as to their original use and the

novelty egg cosies were a delight. How many stitches were there in

those tapestries and cross stitches – they must have taken many

hours. Not forgetting the children, they amazed us with their

interpretations and inventiveness – well done.

Wistanswick Fete

We owe a big thank you to our two judges, Winnie France and

Christine Taylor. It is a very difficult job and no one will ever agree

on the decisions but as we always impress “The judges’ decision is

final”.

Now to our overall winners for 2019

Adults’ section – Sue Griffiths

Children’s section – Tuesdie Wilcox

Congratulations to you both and a big thank you to everyone who

entered and all those who helped with getting the show off the

ground and supporting us all the way through.

We couldn’t do it without you.

See you next year for

our centenary celebrations.
