STOP THE EDL in STOKERACISTS & FASCISTS NOT WELCOME

    DEFEND THE MUSLIM COMMUNITYFROM BIGOTRY

EQUALITY, RESPECT & RELIGIOUS FREEDOM FOR ALL IN STAFFS

On January 23, 2010 the English Defence League (EDL), aracist organisation with ties to the British National Party(BNP), is coming to Stoke-on-Trent to harass and intimidateour Muslim, Asian and black communities. The EDL marchand rally is timed to organise racist white youth support forthe BNP in the upcoming elections. Every anti-racist activistwho wants to stop the BNP from growing and realising theirgoal of becoming a fourth significant electoral party in Britainmust come to Stoke-on-Trent and stop the EDL march.Building an integrated civil rights movement committed tofighting the growing poverty, inequality and hopelessness insociety is the only way of permanently politically defeating

the BNP. This mobilisation gives the new civil rightsmovement a chance to grow and deepen its capacity to leadour nation out of the depression and towards the prosperity, equality and dignity that only we can secure.

The people of Stoke have every reason to be angry andevery reason to seek better, honest, determined leaders. Fornearly two decades our city has been reeling from job lossand despair. The BNP has played on fear and prejudice andthe growing frustration with the Labour Partys failure toaddress our needs, in order to divide our community onracial lines. The BNPs strategies have won us nothing.

The very communities the BNP and EDL have focused theirattacks on, the Asian, black and immigrant communities, arethe communities that have the dynamism and social power to win the jobs and services desperatelyneeded by youth of all races. A united struggle of Asian, black and white youth for jobs, education, expanded public services and employment, dignity and respect, is the only way to halt Stokes downwardspiral and increasing hopelessness. The only new legal reform won this year aimed specifically atalleviating the growing inequality in opportunities for poor and working class white communities, waswon because of the dynamism, power and centrality of the Asian, Muslim, immigrant and blackcommunities within British society.

The Equality Bill, which will become law this spring, and which the BNP and the EDL oppose, willmake it possible for poor and working class white communities, black and ethnic minority communities,

and women to get local authorities to take positive action to stop the institutional discrimination andprejudice that are depriving us of the opportunity to improve our lives and receive equal treatment andrespect in society. The aim of the Equality Bill is to create legal policies that can address institutionalracism and sexism and the growing class inequality in British society. Turning the pro-working classanti-racist and anti-sexist measures in the Equality Bill into real programmes, capable of changing theterrible conditions of life that increasingly large numbers of working class and small business peopleare experiencing, will require getting united direct actions and campaigns of a mass, united, integrated, independent political and social movement. This is the way to create jobs and hope.

The BNPs cynical claims that they favour bringing home the troops by getting Britain to withdraw fromIraq and Afghanistan could only be realised through a policy of organising mass mobilisations againstthe war drive. The BNP has no intention of organising such actions, precisely because they know thatthe Asian and black youth have been and will continue to be the most determined and consistentopponents of American and British foreign policy. The U.S. policy in the Middle East, the Gulf,Afghanistan, Asia and Africa, which Britain backs, continues to devastate the economies and destroy

the social structure of poorer nations, forcing masses of people to emigrate to Britain and Europe. So itis no surprise that the communities in Britain that originate from those nations are the most determinedadvocates for peace. Again, united independent action, not idle posturing, is needed to win.

MUSLIM, ASIAN and BLACK COMMUNITY MOBILIZATIONS ARE THE KEY TO DEFEATING THEEDL IN STOKE-ON-TRENTThe stated aim of the EDL is to close down mosques throughout Britain. We cannot let our mosques orany other religious centre, church or temple to be threatened or desecrated. We must stand up for ourright to be who we are, to worship in our own way, and we must demand that everyone who opposes

fascist tyranny and religious and cultural bigotry and intolerance stands up with us.

Asian, Muslim and black youth must lead the effort to stop the EDL. Where this has happened, theracists and fascists have been decisively defeated. The EDL will not return to Birmingham any timesoon, because Birminghams Asian youth took care of business there.

Stokes Asian community must stand up and defend our right to live as equal members of our society.Acts of racist violence and intimidation, too frequent in our city, will not stop unless we defend ourselvesagainst those who advocate our expulsion from the communities and nation we helped to build. Therewill be those religious, community, police and political leaders who will urge us to stay at home andignore the EDL. They will argue that being passive and acting respectfully is the best way for us toprove to white British people that we deserve to stay here. But nothing could be further from the truth.Demanding to be treated as equal is the best way to keep the vast majority of British people who

support us and hate the fascists on our side.

Strong and decisive action by our communities is how we defeat anti-immigrant scapegoating by theBNP and the EDL. If we stay at home and try to be invisible and act defensively, wavering racistelements will feel more licence to support the fascists. Acting together as an integrated, organised forcewe can protect our communities and convince people looking for strong leadership that there is anactual leadership capable of fighting for and on a political perspective that can win.

------ BOYCOTT J D WETHERSPOON PUBS ------A Wetherspoon pub was used as the meeting place for the EDL in Nottingham on Saturday December5, 2009. Numerous community members had urged the management to close its doors to the racistsand fascists to make it harder for them to gather and march. The pub refused to close. Racists and

fascist youth spent hours gathering, cavorting at the Wetherspoon, using it as both a launch site forforays into Nottingham and a safe place to retreat back to. Because the pub was located close to thetrain station, many Asian and black families felt that they could not move freely in their own city. Thisdisgrace must not be repeated.

A Wetherspoon pub in Manchester was used as a gathering site for the EDL earlier this autumn. J DWetherspoon should withdraw its welcome to the EDL and other racist and fascist organizations. As anational pub chain J D Wetherspoon should act to ensure that none of its premises are being used asthe gathering places and surrogate for fascist organizing. All who stand for equality, respect andfreedom, and oppose harassment and intimidation of any community should be demanding thatthe Wetherspoon refuse to play host to the EDL, or place itself in the position of providing ahome base for the growth of racism, bigotry or fascism in Britain.

Contact J D Wetherspoon and demand that they end their policy of playinghost to and providing a platform for the far right of British racism.
