  • The vision includes having residents ex-perience the greatest health gains achiev-able through culinary means. Food for Life offers residents a wide variety of unpro-cessed, organic, and locally sourced foods, while maximizing nutritional value, lavor and presentation. The program also offers plant-based, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items at every meal and does away with pre-processed foods.

Food for Life is about making residents feel empowered in their food choices, but also about introducing them to new, healthy alternatives to more traditional, classic favorites. Chandler Place prides it-self on purchasing local, in-season organic food through The Goodman Groups ven-dor network and local growers and farm-ers.

The programs standards for health care dining are parallel to those in the culinary ield and restaurant industry. The senior living community strives to incorporate all the elements of a great plate, including texture, balance, color, lavors, taste, aro-ma, and focal point. Though ones dining needs may change in a health care setting, Chandler Place chefs take the culinary ap-proach and work with color and presenta-tion, using fresh herbs and spices to trans-form special restricted diets from bland to appetizing. Everyone eats with their eyes, so the goal is to make the food look and taste appealing.

We are proud to now serve our resi-dents restaurant style in our dining room, The Fountains, where they can choose from a variety of options off our new

menu, depending upon their personal preferences, said Jodi Saeko, executive director of Chandler Place. Residents can enjoy a mix of lavorful choices in the company of others, enriching their qual-ity of life with increased social interaction. The Fountains provides two complimen-tary meals for our residents daily, the third

meal being optional.Executive Chef Patrick Conway has ex-

tensive experience working in assisted liv-ing communities and restaurants. He is a 20-year member of the American Culinary Federation, Minneapolis Chefs Chapter, and received the Federations Chef of the Year award in 2007. From 2009 to 2012,

Chef Conway was Vice President of the Chapter. He said, Being able to provide food that enables our residents to beneit from healthier lifestyles brings a tremen-dous amount of satisfaction to my work. I am able to employ many of the skills and techniques Ive acquired over my career to provide meals that are both delicious and nutritious.

Chandler Place is a senior living commu-nity located in St. Anthony, Minn., at 3701 Chandler Drive Street, and offers assisted living, memory care and respite stays. In 2013, Chandler Place was a recipient of the Silver Achievement in Quality award for its outstanding performance in the health care profession, presented by the American Health Care Association and National Cen-ter for Assisted Living. Sister community St. Anthony Health Center offers skilled nurs-ing services and a full array of in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation services. This Platinum Service campus is managed by The Goodman Group.

Chandler Place Introduces Food for Life and New Executive ChefAt Chandler Place, a premier senior living community in St. Anthony, nutrition plays a key role in the overall health of the residents. In 2013, The Goodman Group, the communitys management company, introduced its Food for Life initiative with the mission of promoting residents overall well-being.

  • Stockyard Days Medallion Hunt Monday, Aug. 3 at 5 p.m., when

the first clue is posted at New Brighton City Hall

Try your hand at the Stockyard Days Medallion Hunt and maybe walk away with the medallion and some cash. The Stockyard Days medallion will be hidden somewhere in New Brighton city limits, on public property, not bur-

ied and no more than four feet off the ground. Don't go in thinking it will be hidden at the city's golf course or in Long Lake Regional Park it won't though it could be hidden at any one of the other 12 city parks or at the New Brighton Community Center. Clues on where to find the medallion will be posted daily at New Brighton City Hall

Stockyard Days point-by-pointHigh summer is here again, meaning that once more, New Brighton is gearing up for its annual Stockyard Days festival. This year marks 35 years of celebrating the city, with the fun kicking off on Sunday, Aug. 2 with The Corral Open golf tournament and winding down with the Ambassador Coronation on Monday, Aug. 10. Your favorite activities are back this year and there are always some surprises. Heres Stockyard Days, point-by-point.

Johanna Holub/BulletinChildren have the opportu-nity to walk, run, bike, trike, or scooter in the Stockyard Days Kiddie Parade. Dressed in a variety of cos-tumes ranging from dancers, superheroes and cowboys to animals, royalty and wizards, the kids owned the show last year. A movie in the park was shown at dusk after all the candy was thrown and fun had.

At 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, roughly 60 cars will arrive at New Brighton's Stockyard Days. The driv-ers, having traversed 120 miles of Minnesota countryside since 7 a.m. that morning, will grab refreshments, socialize, and answer any questions Stockyard Days attendees may have.

The cars do have the potential to invoke curiosity, considering they were all made before 1916.

"They're all pumped up," says Judy Goepel of the drivers. "They're really celebrating because they came across the finish line."

Goepel is the secretary of the New London to New Brighton Antique Car Run, which begins at Peace Lutheran Church in New London and ends at New Brighton's Stockyard Days festi-val in Long Lake Regional Park.

Throughout their tour of rural Min-nesota, drivers also take hospitality stops in five other small towns, where they can have refreshments, socialize with their hosts and even open up their car hoods and explain the mechanisms of their cars to curious residents.

One catch is that drivers embark on their trip at an average speed of 20 miles

per hour. Also, as Antique Car Run par-ticipant Carlton Pate puts it, drivers are exposed to the elements since their cars don't have roofs and windshields.

It's easy to see why Goepel says that completing such a journey gives these drivers a reason to celebrate.

A brief historyThe Antique Car Run is modeled

after the London to Brighton Com-memorative Run held every Novem-ber in England. The Commemorative Run was first held in 1896 to celebrate the repeal of the "red flag law," which required all motorized vehicles to be accompanied by a man with a red flag. The red flag warned drivers of horse-drawn carriages to hold the reins on their horses.

The New London to New Brighton Antique Car Run was first hosted in 1987 as part of New Brighton's Cen-tennial Celebration. The Run has since welcomed antique car drivers from all over the country and even the world. For instance, last year's participants col-lectively came from 17 states, including Oregon, Texas, and the Dakotas. And this year, the Run will welcome partici-pants from Canada and England.

  • Goepel points out that the Run is not a race. "[The purpose of the Run is to] demonstrate the endurance and beauty of these really old cars," she says.

Reasons to love the RunThis year will be Pate's fourth year participating

in the Run. He will drive a 1905 Ford Model F, a car he says he didn't initially set out to buy but ended up purchasing in Florida before it was ever advertised.

Why would Pate come all the way to Minnesota to partake in an antique car tour? "It's one of the best," the Connecticut native says. "People in the Midwest are very friendly ... there isn't as much traffic [as the East Coast] ... and the terrain is nice on these 100-year-old cars."

Pate also appreciates how well-organized the Run is, which he says is thanks to the Run's nearly 300 volunteers. Volunteers provide a number of services to drivers, including transporting drivers' trailers and modern vehicles to the finish line.

Mike Maloney has participated in almost every Run since the first was held 29 years ago. "We missed a few years," the Minnetonka resident recalls. "We found that we really missed not going on it."

One thing Maloney enjoys about the Run besides driving the old cars, of course is the people.

"It's a close-knit community," he says of all the par-

ticipants. "All of us enthusiasts help each other." For instance, if a participant's car breaks down during the Run, other participants will stop and help with repairs.

Antique Car Run president Bill Dubats also says that friendships are formed among participants dur-ing the Run. "The Run is very much about the cama-

raderie among the drivers," he wrote in this year's "President's Welcome."

"Antique car folks become acquainted easily, and strangers quickly become friends."

For more information about the Run, visit www.antiquecarrun.org.

  • For 50 years, Benedictine Health Center at Innsbruck has been a valued neighbor in New Brighton. Its growth and outreach mir-rors the growth of the community around it and the tremendous advances in medical care, rehabilitative therapy and services to help people stay healthy and independent.

Following its inception by the Field family, BHCI was purchased by two private firms: Beverly Enterprises in the late 1970s and then Health Dimensions in 1991. Major ad-ditions included one with a new nursing area and private rooms in 1991.

In 1999, Benedictine Health System re-organized BHCI as a nonprofit and added spiritual care to its mission. And, in 2005, the current campus took shape with a new short-term care neighborhood and physical and occupational care areas. These are now complemented by an outside mobility chal-lenge courtyard with the stairs, pavers and other elements people need to practice on to regain independence even a car to build confidence getting in and out.

A SPECTRUM OF CAREToday's residents at BHCI have the ad-

vantages of specialized care for a variety of needs.

Through the Integrative Health and Heal-ing Services provided throughout the com-munity, the Villa, a secure memory-care neighborhood, engages residents with healing music, aromatherapy, comfort mas-sage and special therapies including Loving Hearts Nursery Babies. These amazingly-re-alistic baby dolls inspire cuddling and rock-ing, which soothes the residents in turn.

The aviary, aquarium and healing garden provide Villa residents a variety of stimulation, but the scheduling of the same regular em-ployees in the neighborhood also ensures the familiarity and individual attention they need.

The Oak View and Garden Terrace neigh-borhoods cater to those who need long-term medical care for a variety of complex condi-tions, but who enjoy BHCIs rich social life, with communal meals, religious services, off-campus trips and special visitors and events. With physical and occupational ther-apy, long-term residents are able to improve

and preserve quality of life in a home-like setting.

Newest to BHCI are the spacious short-term private suites, where people recover from surgery, regain health after an illness or just boost stamina before returning to in-dependence. With nutritious meals and daily therapy, they often recover more fully and quickly than they would at home.

"We help people regain the health they need to live life to its fullest, wherever they are," administrator and CEO Susan Ager ex-plains.

    OUTPATIENT THERAPIES

    AVAILABLEWhether people choose short-term resi-

dential or outpatient care, BHCI helps co-ordinate care as they return home, to make sure they're staying safe and strong.

Just a few of the challenges physical and occupational therapy at BHCI have helped resolve: loss of balance, urinary inconti-nence, speech and swallowing problems, loss of fine motor coordination, gait and stair challenges, low upper-body strength and loss of flexibility in joints. Therapists can also help find the right adaptive equipment for everything from low vision to mobility problems.

Off campus, BHCI offers wellness pro-grams at St. John the Baptist Church in New Brighton, with a network of trained volun-teers and a parish nurse.

Of course, as an outreach of the Benedic-tines, BHCI values faith and is open to patients, residents and staff of all beliefs. Several denominations hold services for res-idents in the chapel, lit by stained-glass win-dows. On campus, Spiritual Care Director Fran O'Connor works full time to coordinate services, memorials and visits to residents to support them in their faith.

That's one of the many reasons BHCI doesn't "feel like" other care centers. The Benedictines' devotion to service and their value of the whole person are visible in ev-ery aspect of life at BHCI. "It's our driving force in who we are and what we do," ex-

    plains Ager.

BHCI celebrates 50 Years of Caring

The Fields visionDorothy M. Field, first administrator of the family-owned BHCI

when it opened in 1965, is described as vivacious, thorough, tough-minded, fair and compassionate. Longtime BHCI cook Evelyn Erreich remembers Field as a leader who modeled attention to detail and empathy for residents. She could walk through looking like a fashion plate on her way to a meeting, but if she saw a resident who needed it, theyd get a hug. She was amazing.

A half-century later, the promising beginnings Dorothy oversaw have bloomed into top-notch medical care and therapies, all with the individual attention Field championed.

Help celebrate a golden timeThe public, families, residents, staff

and all those whove been touched by BHCIs mission over the years are in-vited to visit on these special dates:

April 15: Bishop Lee Piche will preside over a special Mass and bless-ing; by invitation only due to space

May 1: The annual Benedictine Gala pulls out all the stops for the 50th dinner, music, entertainment, auctions and raffles for the extra projects and purchases that enrich life at BHCI

July 15: The Family Picnic, for current families with residents or patients at BHCI, brings loved ones together

Sept. 12: 50th Anniversary Community CelebrationHave memories, newspaper clippings or photos of BHCI over the years? Please call Nancy at 651-288-5218 for more information or to share stories!

Therapy at BHCI is key to wellness, whether to return

    short-term patients or outpatient

    clients back to independence or

Stockyard Days Fireworks Saturday, Aug. 8 at dusk

Head out for another wonderful Stock-yard Days Fireworks display in Long Lake Regional Park on Saturday, Aug. 8 at dusk. This year, event organizers say they have switched from a high alti-tude display to one that takes place lower down, so the best viewing areas for fire-works are in Long Lake Park generally, and at the pavilion, specifically. Organiz-ers also note that you may no longer be able to see them from your home, if you were able to, previously. Grab a chair or

The last place duck wins $100. Access to the viewing area for the Duck Race on Rice Creek is on Mississippi Street between Silver Lake Road and Thorn-dale Avenue. If you can't make it to any of the in-person ticket sales areas, email [email protected] and festival organizers will figure out how to get you a ticket. Winners will be announced around 3 p.m.

    AUTO FACTS: A LEAKY GASKET

HINT: It is not uncommon for the exhaust manifold bolts or studs to break before or during removal of an exhaust manifold, adding to the expense of replacing the gasket.

The exhaust manifold gasket forms a seal where the surfaces of the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head meet. As the metal surfaces on each side of the gasket expand and contract (due to the high temperatures of burned exhaust gases exiting from the engines cylinder), the gasket may develop leaks. A leaky manifold gasket can not only adversely affect engine performance, but the hot exhaust gases can also pose a danger to various components in the engine compartment. To guard against these potential problems and ensure that a leaky manifold gasket will be replaced as needed, vehicle owners should be on the alert for signs of poor engine performance, smells coming from the engine compartment, and loud engine noise.

Severe use and age are the key enemies to your vehicle's gaskets and seals. We normally don't think about them unless we're changing out a component or we are looking at a stain on the floor. Our team of certified professionals at PJW AUTOMOTIVE, INC. is more than capable of fixing your car and even happier to do it.
