H ow many great opportunities have we

missed out on because of our unpleas-

ant attitudes? How tolerant and patient

are we towards each other as

colleagues? What does our behaviour say about us?

Psychological studies prove that “one can become

familiar and comfortable with their bad behaviour or

attitude which can develop and lead to a pattern that

triggers negative energy towards others”. We are all

conditioned differently and have our own norms and

values, and between the pressures of work and

personal responsibilities the last thing you want to

worry about is having to deal with different personal-

ities. Differences aside, the office is the place where we spend most of our time and are

expected to treat others professionally and with utmost respect regardless of their

respective levels of employment. If you want people to treat you with respect, you will

have to show respect, recognise that it is a mutual responsibility.

On any given day we have to deal with our busy schedules and multi -tasking, we are so

consumed with what’s going on around us and may neglect the most important piece in

this puzzle and that’s ourselves. This may lead to exhaustion and sometimes daytime

fatigue on pg 5 we have featured the steps on how to deal with daytime fatigue.

One of our mandates as the HR Department is to be at your service at all times and for

that reason we have added a new page called “advice centre” pg 4 where you will have

an opportunity to send us HR related questions for us to give proper guidance. Please

note that not all questions and answers will be published however you will receive a

personal reply. You may send your HR related questions to [email protected]

Let this Month be the Month of great health…

“ As all human beings are, in my view, creatures of

God's design, we must respect all other human beings.

That does not mean I have to agree with their choices

or agree with their opinions, but indeed I respect them

as human beings”

Q: What is the define difference between paternity leave and

family responsibility leave?

A: Paternity Leave is for male employees and are entitled to 10

consecutive days of paternity leave in a three-year cycle.

Paternity leave should be applied for at least one week in

advanced after the birth of the child to allow planning for an

employee’s absence and may be taken within three (3) months

after birth of the child. All employees are entitled to family

responsibility leave per annum after having been employed by

the University for more than four (4) months. On application,

an employee must submit supporting documents as proof to

the Human Resources Department

Q: Does Private Work Policy apply to all employees?

A: The policy applies to all staff members both support and

academic that undertakes any work at any time that is not the

core responsibilities of the post for which they were contracted by

the University. This is work for which additional remuneration or

other material reward is received through university projects or

external business relations.

Q: Who qualifies for overtime and does working on a Public

holiday, counts as overtime ?

A: According to the BCEA, as per section 10(2) which states that

“it is mandatory to make overtime payment to an employee

who earns less than the threshold of R205 433.30 per annum

and who works overtime” as much as employees who earn

above the set threshold have no legal right to demand pay for

overtime, they do however have the right to negotiate for it.

Overtime is remunerated at 1.5 times the normal rate whereas

work done on a public holiday is remunerated at twice the

normal rate.

H O W TO D E A L W I T H DAY T I M E FAT I G U E

A restless night, feeling overworked, having things on your mind, working shifts or suffering from insomnia can result in you starting

the day feeling sleepy, making it difficult for you to concentrate try the following steps to help you deal with daytime fatigue

1. The practice of splashing your face with cold water when you feel a little tired makes perfect sense because the feel of the cold

liquid on your face helps wake you up and get rid of sleepiness. And you can do it not only first thing upon waking but throughout

the day, whenever you feel fatigue setting in. You'll see that you'll feel refreshed and reinvigorated.

2. A good caffeine-free trick to avoid daytime sleepiness is to eat an apple. Several scientific studies have shown that, owing to its

fructose content, eating an apple causes the same reaction in the body as drinking caffeine to make you feel awake and alert, but

in a much more natural way.

3. Drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of water a day. Dehydration affects the oxygenation of the brain, making you feel even more tired.

If in addition to having slept little or badly you don't drink enough fluid during the day, you will feel even more exhausted.

4. Sleep from 6 to 8 hours, little sleep can affect our body negatively. Try to always go to sleep and wake up at the same time so your

body gets into the routine and will not feel tired.

5. A glass of lukewarm water with lemon juice, apart from being one of the best allies to clean your intestine and your liver, is also an

excellent natural option to get rid of sleepiness effectively.

6. Take short, regular breaks throughout the day and stretch to energise your body and increase your energy. A few minutes of

stretching a day will fight off sleepiness and help you perform at your best in spite of the fatigue.
