All of the islands, the water between themand the bridges which connect the variousparts of the city give Stockholm its uniquecharacter. Paradoxically, it is the naturalenvironment which makes the city ofStockholm so special. The countryside isnever far away – it is in the water, in thecity’s many parks and in the clean, freshair. The natural boundaries which thewater creates also mean that differentparts of the town have developed theirown character.

The large island of Södermalm is the hauntof, and home to, young creative people. Inthe old working-class quarters here smallshops and alternative bars flourish andtrendsetters and bohemians meet in thearea around Götgatsbacken, Skånegatanand SoFo (south of Folkungagatan).

Gamla stan (Old Town) is the veryfoundation and centre of Stockholm. Asearly as the 13th century the town beganto grow on this small island. Nowadays theantique façades, mediaeval cellar-vaults,souvenir shops and restaurants drawtourists from Sweden and around theworld.

The heart of modern Stockholm is to befound in the City and the pulse is fastest inthe area around Stureplan. This hub is amagnet for the most importantrestaurants, the most expensive shops andthe trendiest people. Kungsgatan and

Hamngatan then cut through the City pastthe large department stores towards thefocal points for Stockholm’s publictransport.

Behinds its historic stone façades Vasastanconceals people involved in the world ofculture and the media. It is a districtcharacterised by its quiet neighbourhoodlife and has two focal points at Odenplanand St. Eriksplan. Around Rörstrandsgatanthe pulse of the neighbourhood can be felteven more strongly, with its many smallshops and local restaurants. Here you willfind most antique shops.

The beautiful promenade of NorrMälarstrand is the principal attraction ofKungsholmen. The promenade begins atStadshuset (the Town Hall) and finishes atRålambshovsparken, which on hot summerdays is filled with Stockholmers cooling offin the waters of Riddarfjärden.

Östermalm is traditionally the district ofthe well-to-do and Strandvägen isStockholm’s most expensive address. Theneighbourhood around Östermalmstorg isfull of exclusive boutiques sellingfurnishing, clothes and delicatessen. Herethere are also many of the town’s betterrestaurants.

In the greater Stockholm area, you willfind much more than just the large cityparks such as Kungsträdgården andRålambshovsparken. There are alsonational parks and lots of other greenoases perfect for relaxation, playing andpicnicking: the Bergianska botanicalgarden, the ecological park, palace parksand more. Many parks and gardens arehome to statues and buildings that arecultural points of interest.

Kungliga Slottet (the Royal Palace)In Gamla stan (Old Town) with its viewover the Stockholm inlet stands the RoyalPalace, which in May 1697 was almosttotally destroyed in a fire. The Palacearchitect Nikodemus Tessin commencedimmediately on the erection of a newPalace. In 1754 the Royal Family was ableto move back in. The royal family nolonger lives here, however – the Palace islargely a museum which shows its Stateapartments with artworks and furniturefrom the 1700’s and later. The Palace alsohouses Gustav III’s antikmuseum (Museumof antiquities), Skattkammaren (theTreasury) and museet Tre Kronor (theThree Crowns Museum). BirkaDuring the Viking era the Viking town ofBirka was the most important tradingcentre in Mälardalen (Lake Mälaren valley).The town was founded at the end of the8th century and was abandoned at the endof the 10th century. Today it is a museumdisplaying archaeological finds andbuildings, which shows how the Vikings

Stockholm is full of boutiques, departmentstores and shops of all types, but if youwant to buy something a little more specialit is necessary to find the right place.There are three major areas for those whoare looking for the new, different orexclusive.

In the City towards Östermalm, and inparticular the triangle Stureplan –Norrmalmstorg – Östermalmstorg, you willfind Stockholm’s most exclusive boutiquesfor furnishing, clothes and accessories.

Biblioteksgatan and the small streetssurrounding it contain a series of famousboutiques. Here, for example, we find theshoe shops Rizzo and Don & Donnaopposite the ladies’ boutique Mathilde.Nymans Ur is regarded as being one ofStockholm’s best boutiques for exclusivewatches.

The Swedish designer brand Nygårds Annawhich produces modern clothing deeplyrooted in Swedish cultural tradition has aboutique on Mäster Samuelsgatan, and onthe same street there is also Götrich whichhas everything a well-dressed man mayneed. On Jacobsbergsgatan lies the chicFornarina.

Birger Jarlsgatan begins in style with Gucciand on the same street you will find the



exclusive Nathalie Schuterman, thepopular Swedish street market We andexclusive ABCD, and at the corner of themini-shopping arcade Passagen liesJ.Lindeberg’s boutique.

By all means go into Passagen – EfvaAttling has her jewellery shop here and theyoung ladies’ favourite, Mrs H, lies a littlefurther in, as does the young fashionboutique Le Shop.

Then walk up Grev Turegatan, where apartfrom a chain of other shops you willencounter the Swedish Filippa K, aboutique for girls and one for guys. FilippaKnutsson has successfully staked a claim inthe “smart casual” territory.

Almost opposite lies Anna Holtblad,another Swedish designer who assiduouslyseeks out what is thought to be red hot.Turn onto Humlegårdsgatan and look intothe chic Skin Deep. Further on, on thecorner opposite Östermalmstorg lies thefurniture shop Bruka.

You would do well here to turn intoÖstermalmshallen, a market hall full ofdelicatessen and also some cafeteriaswhich offer an excellent lunch, try forexample the fish expert Lisa Elmqvist.

Down along Nybrogatan there is a series ofshops where you should not miss theexclusive furniture showroom NordiskaGalleriet.

On Södermalm along Götgatsbacken andSoFo there are some small independentdesign- and fashion boutiques.

In the middle of Götgatsbacken lies thecosmetics palace C/O Stockholm whichalso stocks a whole lot of accessories.Swedish paper design can be found atOrdning & Reda and further down,southwards, lies Bruno, a shopping arcadewith a selection of smart outlets such asDavid Design and the Swedish brand

Whyred.

On the opposite side of the street fromBruno lies Designtorget which offers forsale gadgets of all types, often from smallindependent manufacturers, perfect forthose looking for presents.

If you then make your way a little furtherto the south and come down towards whatis now called SoFo, that is to say ”south ofFolkungagatan”, there is a wealth of theunusual, the small and the amusing. OnSkånegatan there is for example the shopBadlands, for all those looking for hard tofind DVD films. Pet Sounds record shop onthe same street is the best in Sweden forrock, country and indie.

Practically at Nytorget you will find Coctail,and on Södermannagatan Coctail Delux,two shops which have made kitsch theirspeciality. On Bondegatan lies Sweden’sbest second hand book shop Lisa Larsson,and also the young ladies’ favouriteTjallamalla.

Nytorgsgatan has two shops, Neu and LeShop, with cutting-edge alternativefashion, and on Renstjärnas gata we findBoutique Sportif which is the home ofstreet fashion favourites.

Vasastan is home to the majority ofantique dealers and a whole lot of smallersecond hand shops, primarily alongOdengatan between Odenplan and StEriksplan, but also on Upplandsgatan andRoslagsgatan.

In Upper East, there is a multitude ofshops, cafés and restaurants. The areastretches along the Karlavägen, and theconnecting two blocks. Fashion and interiordecorating shops are side by side. and thetrendy cafés are jostling with the luxuriousrestaurants in one of Stockholm’s mostfashionable districts.



NKThe exclusive department store with cultstatus. And the safe bet for thediscriminating. This is where Stockholmersgo when they require a gift for someonebut don’t quite know what. Severalinternational fashion designers haveoutlets here, and the collection is shownfrequently to ensure that the higheststandards are maintained. The departmentstore’s flagship for fashion is Paul &Friends boutique.

Bar life is what oils the wheels ofStockholm society. A large part of thesocial life of Stockholmers is played outover a beer. The expression “to go andhave a beer” is synonymous withsocialising and it is rarely just one beerthat is drunk, and may not even be a beerat all. To have a beer can just as easilymean to have a gin and tonic or a glass ofred wine. The important thing is that one isseen, and that is done at a bar. Choose itwith care.

Much of Stockholm’s nightlife takes placein bars. The club scene is also important,and clubs targeting differing groups areheld on special days. AirportStockholm Arlanda Airport liesapproximately 40 kilometres north ofStockholm. Airport buses into the cityleave approximately every 15 minutes andthe journey takes about 40 minutes andcosts 110 kronor one way. Arlanda Expressis the name of the fast train which coversthe same distance in 20 minutes. Traindeparts 4-6 times per hour. It costs 240kronor one way.

Several years ago some budget travelcompanies started using Västerås Airportwhich lies just over 100 kilometresnorthwest of Stockholm, and SkavstaAirport which lies 104 kilometres south ofStockholm. From both airports buses runto the Central Station in Stockholm. Theprice is about 150 kronor one way.

Bromma Airport lies only 9 kilometres fromthe city and caters mainly for domesticairlines. Buses depart from the Cityterminal, a one-way trip takes around 20minutes and costs 79 kr.
