  • Stockdale High School is one of the most spirited schools and with the new mascot this year, Stockdales school spirit is only getting better. Stockdales Mascot performs at home sports games for varsity football and volleyball. While cheering on our school is a main con-cept for our mascot, there are many things behind the scenes that are secretive. Being the Mascot isnt as easy as you think. Our Mustang is unknown to most students and facuilty; the goal is to keep the identity of the lucky senior a secret. This person goes to school just like ev-eryone else but is very quiet about the mascot. You cant draw too much attention to yourself; being sneaky is key. Walking into games carrying a huge bag and not hanging out with everyone in the student section can sometimes be suspicious. I have a ton of fun being the mascot. Not many people know who I am and it is almost like having a secret identity. He/She says games are sometimes diffi-cult for him/her because some of his/her friends yell his or her name and they might give the identity away. The few that know who the mascot is must keep the name of our Mustang a secret! The Mustang mentions that the fun and excitement at major events, such as rallies, give you the opportunity to be crazy and have fun when no one knows its you. Stockdales Mascot has done a fabulous job this year, keeping our school full of pride and school spirit. The rest of the year is bound to be extraordinary!

Aramee Wilkinson Senior at Stockdale High School and Co-Cheer Captain:Q: What made you want to join cheer?A: I had friends on the team who really encouraged me to join.

Q: What is it like being in cheer?A: Cheer is so much fun, the girls and I bond and weve become so close this year. The friendships Ive made make the early practices worth it.

Q: How does it feel to be one of the cheer captains?A: I love it! It is such a fun experience. Being captain makes me feel respon-sible and motivated to be focused.

Q: How much of an impact has cheer been on your life?A: Stockdale Cheer has had a huge impact on my life. I am so glad I have the opportunity to join and make great friends. I will cherish and remember it forever.

  • Pros: The introduction of technology into the school environment has many ben-efits. Students are able to interact more efficiently with the teacher because they can now research topics which promotes questions in the classroom. Students us-ing their personal devices become more engaged in whatever it is that theyre doing with their personal devices includ-ing classwork. ` Class assignments that require the internet can be done without having to leave for a computer room which allows more flexibil-ity. BYOD also promotes less paper waste which is both costly and detrimental to the environment. With the students using their own devices in the classroom, schools can also save money on technology costs. With todays students becoming more and more tech-savvy, it is likely that technology will be implemented in their workplace. BYOD provides an op-portunity for teaching appropriate use of devices which they will be using in future professions. With BYOD technology in the classroom, students can easily collaborate on projects which is key to promote en-gagement in todays classrooms.

Cons Earlier this year Stockdale students were given the opportunity to opt into the BYOD policy. This policy has been gaining momentum as more and more schools have decided to adopt this trendy program. De-vices on campus may have revolutionized how students are taught, however some students are taking this privilege a little too far. People occasionally use their phones for non-educational activities while at school, protected under the safety guard of the policy. It is not uncommon to see fel-low students surfing the web, using social media, or playing games at school instead of being on task. Even though there is a system set in place to try and prohibit cer-tain websites or apps, it is easy to beat the system and break the rules. The convenience which BYOD pro-vides both educationally and socially is enormous. Since students no longer need to sneak their phones, they are much more likely to use them to cheat or break rules. BYOD is a new system that needs to be watched closely and improved throughout the upcoming years.

  • 1. Pink yoga pants no longer...Weve step up our game and moved on to Lululemons.

    2. Now its all about Converse, nice and clas-sic, where before we were making the not so fasionable decision of wearing Toms.

    3. All color, all day, no longer. Weve learned that some neutral colors can make just as bold of a statement.

    4. Abercrombie and Fitch...We ditched that and upgraded to Ameri-can Eagle where every-thing doesnt have a moose and bold text on it but just a small eagle.

    5. We got wiser and decided to stop buying pleather handbags and actually invest some money into a REAL leather handbag that will last longer.6. UGGs are comfort blankets for you feet but we now know that you need a nice pair of leather boots as well for the days that you want to look a little nicer and more put together.

    7. Headbands across the forehead was a big trend that I later learned was just not a good look for me.

    8. Instead of doing our hair every day so we look good for school, we learned that we should just limit it to maybe just once or twice a week so our hair actually has some life left.

    9. Matching with your friends should only happen on dress up days...Girls start to learn to have their own style that may no longer be like their best-friends.

    10. The biggest thing we as a senior class have learned about our fash-ion in these past four years if that you should just express yourself. It doesnt matter whats trending. Just wear what makes you feel best about yourself!

  • A painter paints pictures on canvas but musicians paint their pictures on silence. The crowd fell still as the

conductor, Mr. Biller, raised his arms to begin the first piece. On Octo-ber 22nd, the Stockdale High School Orchestra had its first concert of the 2015-2016 school year. So how exactly do you get a group of over

100+ students to play cohesively and in tune? Orchestra is an elective that any student, experienced or inexperienced, may join if they have the passion to play an

instrument. During the first quarter, they only have string orchestra. For the rest of the year, they also have the symphonic

orchestra. That includes a number of band instruments such as the flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, french horn, and oboe.

Rehearsal is held everyday at 6:30am in the cafeteria since they do not have their own

room like the band. Throughout the week, they also hold practice ses-sions for small groups called sectionals to help

students learn how to improve. The orchestra cannot be run by a few people alone because it is a group effort that requires the help of

every single player. Music is the universal language of the world. Two people who

do not speak the same language would still be able to understand the same message or feeling of a piece. It speaks for us the words that can not be spoken. Hopefully, everyone will have an opportunity, the

experience, and the magical feeling of playing an instrument.

  • THINGS SENIORS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT COLLEGE

Each class has a cer-tain amount of credits that you need to graduate. So even if its a class about sports, you will get credit for it. Your professors will NOT give you homework everynight. It sounds like a good thing, but this ac-

tually means you have to study, do problems, and understand the material all by yourself on your own time. Doing work will not be about getting an A for the assignment, it will be about learning for your future. Your grade will be

based on your tests and essays, so studying is the best thing for your grade. Even though your tests will be hard, remember, your professor wants you to suc-ceed. College is all about preparing you for the real world.

Its the time of year when you should be hitting that submit button to the colleges you want to attend next fall. But first, here are some things gradu-ating seniors should know about college. You get to choose your classes. Yes, they have to be under some cer-tain requirements, but you get to choose what time and what class you want. Second, every class counts.

  • Navratri is a Hindu tradition. Navratri is ob-served in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin. In 2015, Navratri starts on October 13th and lasts until October 22th. Navratri is the Hindu festival of nine nights dedicated to the glorification of Shakti, the feminine form of the Divine. Traditionally they wear colorful Garbs to do a dance called Garba around a lamp, images and statues of their mother goddess. The dance is eight steps repeated over and over around the lamp or statue. Many festivities are as-sociated with Navatri such as ceremonies, eating sweets, singing, and dancing. Many of Stockdales students participated in this cultural event. Even some non-Hindus had a great time learning about this unique culture. As students at such a diverse school, we feel it is important to understand where we all come from and get a taste of their back-grounds. This diversity is just a part of what is so special about Stockdale.

  • The Mystical Magical Mustang is just an urban myth around the school but the rumor has it that it was a real animal. Supposedly the Mustang was here before the school was built and it might still be here. It was supposed to be the mascot, sources say. We are told that he had an epic arm wrestling match with the current mascot and was stripped of his title. He might still be on campus, our totally legit sources tell us. No one knows the powers this Mustang holds but we know he is super real. Believe it...

  • STOCKDALE MUSTANGSBLACKHOLE

  • Stockdale Mustangs had a rough year this year with football. We did not make it play offs, but the end of the season ended well. And no matter what the Black Hole was always there to support the boys. The Black Hole was started two years ago, it is where all supporters come to cheer on the football team. The boys had an amazing win on Senior Night against Frontier. They started off the season right with a win the first game. After the first game we played some of the hardest teams all in a row resulting in very close games. Some seniors that stuck out this year were Anthony Onsurez, Zion Williams, De-Andre Henderson, Dawson Putney, Jacob Edwards, Jacob Sanchez, and Luke Edwards. We are losing a lot of talent. Some of the boys will move onto other sports and others will start to worry about college life after high school.

  • STOCKDALE WINS VIA ARTE Congratulations to Stockdale High School for winning in the Via Arte Festival as Best High School in show. Stockdale was represented by four works of art and walked away with first place out of all Bakersfield high schools. Students from Stockdale volunteered their time and effort to work on these beautiful oil pastel scenes.

Words from the students: As the saying goes, hard work pays off. Over 16 hours of hard work and dedication was spent on the No One Likes Me chalk art. -Thomas Torrez

Waking up at 6 in the morning was a pain but it all paid off to know that our work turned out amazing. Ap-parently the judges thought so too. -Lulu

  • GRAPHIC ARTS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL What are some similarities in your college class to the Graphic Arts class here?- The class is actually very similar in terms of in-class activity. We are given labs to work on projects and can ask others for help just like how class was at Stockdale. We also have to present our work in a preliminary peer critiques follow by a session to make any chang-es suggested before the final critique where the project is turned in.

Have you recieved an internship or work using your experience here?- While I havent done any internships, my friend, Alber, has been working part time producing promotional flyers for Anime Expo 2016 which will be put up around Los Angeles.

What is your favorite project that youve done in college so far?- My favorite work so far is definitely the Man vs. Machine project I did in Photoshop. We had to combine and edit images to represent the relation-ship of man and machine. I had a lot of fun with the project as I was able to test my skills and challenge them with Pho-toshop. I created a night time cityscape to show how man had changed his envi-ronment to machine.

Interview with Matt Marcuat How has graphic arts at Stockdale High School helped you in college?- It has given me the skillset to do some of the more advanced concepts Ive had for projects. It gave me a strong base to work off of so that I dont have to worry about not knowing what Im doing in class.

What are some differences between what we do in high school versus in col-lege?- The biggest difference in college is we work with only original photography, or copyright free images. Its not too difficult though as we can bring in items and use the scanner or cameras provided to us. After projects are finished, we print and mount them on boards to be displayed.

  • On October 24, 2015, Stockdale High School hosted the annual walk against can-cer. The Breast Cancer Walk, was brought to us by National Honor Society, a club in Stock-dale that strives to help people in our community. They put together this walk to create awareness for breast cancer for the month of October. Since there was an age restriction of sixteen and older, many stu-dents were not able to attend but still sent their support.

Stockdale is the breast school ever! Annually, Stock-dale goes pink for breast cancer awareness. In our game against Frontier this year, we did sur-prisingly well. We won 24-20, winning our last home game this year. Our dean, Mrs. Folce, promised to dye her hair pink in honor of breast cancer aware-ness once we reached $500. We raised a total of $1014, reaching the goal and twice over.

    Mustangs Calling out Cancer

    Walking Away From Cancer

    pink out!

  • While Stockdale continues to go above and beyond, that Friday night football game was also to be covered in pink to celebrate this amazing event. The student section of the Stockdale stands, known to students as the Black Hole, was not to be filled with the black clothing normally worn by students, but covered in the pink clothing. Par-ents were not to be left out, they to were asked to wear pink as well.

All of these actions, highlight the sup-port and love that flows out of Stockdale. Stockdale really seems to be a superhero to cancer patients everywhere with their massive show of support.

Stockdales colorguard team shows what theyve got. They amazed the crowd of Mustangs and Titans with their performance under our Friday night lights. The Mustangs are definitely going to miss seeing their colorguard team take the field on game day.
