It’s contagious.The collaboration of talented individuals working independently and jointly to reach a common goal runs rampant in this issue. The work ethic and philosophy of several residential design and build teams are resulting in beautiful projects to be enjoyed by St. Louis homeowners.

Moving Up To a View (page 39) in a metro-chic condominium, the lucky homeowners from Decatur, Ill. experienced a fun-filled design relationship with interior designer, Carolyn Grove for more than a year that definitely went vertical… to a vertical community that is. While out in suburbia, The Dream Team (page 44), consisting of interior designer, Gail Doveikis, Dick Busch of Dick Busch Architects and Glenn Brinkmann of St. Albans Construction, set about creating their clients’ vision of a warm and welcoming home with a team spirit second to none.

Don’t we all just love the extra living space warmer weather brings! With a focus on functioning outdoor spaces, Jason Todd, landscape designer for Landscape St. Louis, created a Pool with a Purpose (page 50) by designing in stages with the kids as the top priority. The pavilion in Collaborative Construction (page 58) boasts of old world charm, breathtaking views and a homeowner that was an active participant of the team including architect Lauren Strutman of Lauren Strutman Architects and contractor John Shea of Callier Thompson Shea Contruction & Design.

SLHL: Many homeowners do not know where to begin when it comes to landscaping. What advice do you have for someone looking to create a lush landscape at his or her home?

Matt: To me, a garden is boundaryless, meaning you have to consider how it relates to your neighbor’s

home, the sky, your community, etc. Your garden doesn’t stop at the edge of your property. So when you begin the process to design a layout for your yard, be sure to keep the long and short views in mind. I advise homeowners to first think about what they want out of their yard. How are you planning to use it? How much time do you have to take care of your yard, and how willing are you to spend time taking care for it? After you evaluate your expectations, you need to understand the space you have. Spend a day making sun charts to see where the sun falls throughout the day and look for possible drainage problems. Once you know your space, you can begin to design your landscape. I always recommend hiring a professional. We help you get to the end results faster and can alleviate potential problems.

SLHL: After evaluating their yard, how do you help homeowners determine a plant palate?

Matt: We will want to plant things that fit your lifestyle. Depending on the time and attention you can give your garden and how your family will use your yard, we begin to sort out what should go where. Plants each have a job, so put them to work. Whether they are there to provide shade, line a pathway or fill a space that collects excess water, each plant has a purpose and function and should be arranged accordingly. Humans create gardens by editing, not adding. Remember, less is more. As soon as you have enough that satisfies you, then stop and enjoy.

SLHL: Throughout your career, where have you drawn your inspiration?

Matt: My first inspiration was moving to the country as a child. We lived next door to a home built by famed St. Louis architect Isadore Shank. I was fascinated by the architecture and lush garden. I would tend to the garden and eventually extended it into our yard. In college, I studied architecture at Washington University, and a professor learned of my passion for gardening. He began giving me projects that combined

both landscaping and architecture during the summer. After I graduated, I won the chance to design an 80-acre natural garden for Maritz South Campus. It was my first big project and really catapulted my career. Then, I started to think about people’s needs in their own homes. Landscape architects Thomas Church, who wrote “Gardens Are for People,” and Dan Kiley have inspired my style.

SLHL: Styles and design are constantly changing, whether in fashion, interior design or landscaping. What is a current trend you are seeing in garden design?

Matt: A big trend right now is to have a less-mown lawn and more planting. Non-mown grasses, such as Buffalo grass, require little, if any, mowing and minimal watering and fertilizing. By juxtaposing the grasses with your house, patio or driveway, you merge with the natural world. In a natural garden, I like to mix buildings and architecture with man-made spaces and the natural system. It is a very eco-friendly and sustainable way to design your garden.

on a typical day in the studio, you’ll find robert Michelmann with a welding torch in hand. this St. Louis artist has been creating sculptures for both indoor and outdoor settings for almost 25 years. although he has produced art using media from watercolor to bronze, his love is for stainless steel—the feel, the hardness, the clean welding and the durability of it. Michelmann uses art to interpret the world. “art is a form of expression of ideas,” he says. “It allows you to work out problems, to choose a better path.” Many of his pieces explore the idea of opposites, or dichotomies, in mankind, creating an inherent tension in his pieces, yet giving people the opportunity to view both sides of a topic. “‘Do not touch’ signs really bother me,” says Michelmann. Instead of viewing art from a distance, most of his pieces are interactive, where viewers not only can touch, but sit inside, walk through or even readjust some of the moving parts. one piece, “Meditation Lockup,” looks like a small, one-person jail, where a person can sit in it only in the crossed-legged yoga position. a dichotomy of the piece is that meditation mentally frees the mind, while physically a person is locked up. another piece, “Dueling Weight Loss Machines,” includes two old-fashioned weight-loss machines hooked together, with a mirror standing beside them. Viewers are encouraged to go inside the sculpture and turn on the machines. this piece stimulates thought about physical appearance and individuality. a third piece looks like a love seat, but with the seats facing away from each other.

This piece raises ideas about communication, both what people say and don’t say. Art is everywhere in Michelmann’s life. “I used to think that I just did art when I was creating sculptures, but now I find it everywhere in my life,” he says. “Back in 1990, I bought the old Jersey Farm Dairy building with a partner, and we transformed the building into the Soulard Fine Arts Building, with 15 working artist studios. My wife and I recently designed our new home, influenced by the architecture of Midwestern barns. I also work as a designer of industrial kitchen equipment. My definition of art has broadened.” Why does Michelmann continue to create art? “It’s my firm belief that everyone can benefit from art—from viewing it, from doing it,” he explains. “This is a terrific artist community. Where to View SculpturesSeveral of Michelmann’s pieces are on display throughout St. Louis. “The Couple Mold,” made of stainless steel, is located on the Webster University campus, at the Loretto-Hilton Center. The large wrought-iron gates, fencing and hand-made finials at the Soulard Fine Arts Building, at 1007 Russell Blvd., were made by Michelmann, as well as the big gate at Hardshell Café, 1860 S. 9th St., which includes a turtle, lobster and crab as design elements.

Nearby, “Terrascecretasaurus,” a wormlike sculpture made of anodized aluminum, is located in the sculpture garden at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Chef Taylor is proud to point out, too, that the bistro’s offerings also appeal to vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets, which allow diverse parties to completely enjoy dinner on the patio.

To be certain, dinner on the patio at Bistro 1130 is not to be missed. As the warmth of a summer’s day turns into a cooler evening, sharing a meal in the open air lends a certain European flair to your outing. There is something hypnotic about sitting on the edge of a lake, surrounded by a lush landscape, that seems to transport you to someplace fresh and new, which pairs nicely with Chef Taylor’s fresh and new menu.

Nothing says summertime quite like watermelon. Chef Taylor assembles a bright and cheerful watermelon and goat cheese salad that brings together sweet and savory flavor with crisp and creamy textures to create the most delightful harmony. It’s a perfect beginning to a summer supper.

Chef Taylor’s mesquite smoked pork loin is sure to exceed your expectations. This dish, which is served on a bed of sweet potato and garlic puree and a quinoa-and-roasted-tomato “cake,” delivers big flavors that are familiar but far from usual.

No dinner would be complete without a standout dessert. The beautiful, moist pound cake is what Chef Taylor recommends. In the summertime, this perennial favorite is dressed with blackberries and strawberries, a touch of fresh mint, Grand Marnier whipped cream – for a touch of deluxe flavor – and served on top of rich crème anglaise. Outdoor living is the height of fashion in this stunninghigh-rise condominium in Clayton.

risp, bright and contemporary, with a hint of deco and a soupçon of Mid-Century, this metro-chic condominium residence at Maryland Walk in Clayton provides the ideal weekend getaway for its owners.

The couple’s primary residence is in Decatur, Ill., a traditionally styled lakeside home where they’ve lived happily for 40 years and the husband continues his four-decade career as an attorney. Four years ago, however, the pair began looking for “a weekend spot, something completely different” that wouldn’t require a great deal of travel time. The choices were narrowed down to Chicago (which they both enjoy) and St. Louis, another favorite destination and home to their daughter, son-in-law and teenage grandson. Ultimately, it was the vibrant Clayton lifestyle and the spectacular views from Conrad Properties’ high-rise condominium development that won them over. “We love the ‘vertical community’ – so different from where we live,” the wife enthuses. “The floor plan is great for entertaining – open, light and airy. And we can walk to restaurants or drive to the Fox [Theatre] or Forest Park in minutes. The resources are wonderful!” The city’s art galleries, The Vino Gallery in particular, are clearly another attraction. A devotee of original artwork and enthusiastic supporter of up-and-coming local artists, the wife has lavished each room of the condominium with a tasteful collection of original pieces. “It’s like a mini-gallery,” she laughs. And designer Carolyn Grove of CV Grove Interiors quickly chimes in, “It’s a joy to work with someone who appreciates original art.” Perhaps the home’s most striking feature is its expansive, lushly planted terrace, which literally blurs the distinction between indoor and outdoor. The line of sight from the beautifully equipped kitchen across the living room to the terrace is unimpeded, and a full wall of glass is all that defines the spaces. “We’re on an upper floor, and it’s a northern exposure, so we didn’t need drapes,” the owner explains. “The terrace enlarges the space, and we didn’t want window treatments to restrict the wonderful view.”

A tranquil oasis in this semi-urban setting, the terrace overlooks miles of dense, green treetops – all the way to the Arch and Downtown St. Louis! Enhancing the verdant atmosphere, a self-watering planter, filled with boxwood and daisies and flanked by bougainvillea trees, extends the full width of the terrace rail. As the first to own this fashionable residence, the couple had a virtually blank canvas with which to work, and the built-in amenities adapted well to their chosen color scheme of white, gray and aubergine. The fireplace surround and countertops, for example, are gray-grained white marble, and the kitchen and bath backsplashes are white subway tile – all consistent with the wife’s vision of an understated, minimalist décor. “We wanted a place that was elegant, yet comfortable and fun,” she reflects.

Adhering to that theme, she and Carolyn have enjoyed a fun-filled design relationship for more than a year. The first items selected were practical – Roman shades from Hilson, Inc. for the master bedroom and a floor covering for the living room. “We needed to lighten up the dark wood flooring, and Carolyn found this great carpeting from Bill Allen, a geometric pattern in gray on off-white that we had serged and have used in other areas, as well,” says the owner. The first art piece chosen was a commissioned abstract canvas by Lyle Salmi, art professor at Millikin University, positioned above the sofa. A graceful, brushed-stainless sculpture by André Tourette fills the living room’s large decorative niche. Custom detailing applied to the fireplace surround and two softly contoured armchairs, reupholstered in aubergine, give the room

what the owner describes as its “deco-ish” touches. A unique, 32-piece assemblage by St. Louis-based artist Myles Keough flanks the fireplace, and a mirrored-front chest was refinished in white with a gray striae wash to complement the décor. Noting that virtually all of the fabrics and custom pillows throughout the home are by Romo, the owner remarks, “I’m huge on texture, but I wanted the overall effect to be subtle. So, most of the artwork and mirrors have been custom-framed to blend with the walls.” She adds that four shades of gray were actually used, including a subtle metallic tone on accent walls in the master bedroom and bath. Horizontal pinstriping on the office walls – a clever application by muralist Margaret von Kaenel, who was responsible for all of the condominium’s faux finishes – gives dimension and the illusion of wallpaper to the space. Clean lines and contemporary styling characterize the functional, veneered work center, installed by St. Louis Closet Co. The owner admits, however, “Little serious work is done in this office. We forget everything here. It’s like being on vacation.” The home’s two privacy suites are serene and sophisticated. A glass-paneled door brings the beauty of the terrace into the master

bedroom, and a rhythmic, longitudinal abstract, personally framed and positioned by artist Zack Smithey, surmounts the custom-upholstered bed. Blanketed with cabinetry and shelving, the opposing wall displays two miniature replicas of Xian warriors, acquired by the owners during a trip to China. Equally noteworthy, a panel painted by von Kaenel illustrates the phases of the moon, one of the husband’s special interests. “Smoke and mirrors” is the owner’s tongue-in-cheek label for the luxurious guest suite, with its taupe-tinged gray walls, upholstered Baker Knapp & Tubbs bed and custom-framed mirrors. High-set channel glass windows provide borrowed light, and a waterfall bench, upholstered in cut velvet, conceals electrical outlets on the open wall. Any chance that Maryland Walk might eventually become the couple’s permanent home? Perhaps. “My husband will be doing more work in St. Louis, so we’ll certainly be spending more time here,” the wife replies, quipping, “Anything’s possible, and our home in Decatur could always become our ‘weekend lake house.’” Meanwhile, she and Carolyn still have a few finishing touches in mind for this fabulous, high-rise retreat. How do you make a house a home? It’s a challenge every designer faces—a challenge that’s even greater when there is no house to decorate. But when designer Gail Doveikis of G.M. Doveikis & Associates found herself in just such a situation, she saw it as an opportunity. Her client had approached her about decorating an as-yet-unbuilt house, and she eagerly accepted. Three years later, she calls the experience her dream project. Together, Gail, Dick Busch of Dick Busch Architects and Glenn Brinkmann of St. Albans Construction set about creating their clients’ vision of a warm and welcoming house that would host frequent family gatherings and would accommodate the couple’s three grown children, their spouses and a gaggle of grandkids. The result is a stately, brick home that’s both sophisticated and approachable. The exterior’s intricate brickwork and warm-toned Indiana limestone lend the house a historical air, while the interior’s generously scaled rooms, soft color palate and multiple fireplaces create an inviting and hospitable atmosphere. Large windows at the back of the house infuse the space with light and offer glimpses of the curving Missouri River through the woods, sloping to its banks. “I got to be involved from the very beginning,” Gail explains, noting that she even had input on the color of the slate for the roof and the brick for the exterior. “Most architects, the exterior is their turf, but Dick was great about listening to my suggestions. Glenn, too—I sketched moldings and built-in bookcases; he was so helpful … and unflappable. It was really a collaboration.” “They all brought something unique to the house,” agrees the homeowner, who refers to Gail, Dick and Glenn as “the dream team.” But the dream team’s biggest success may be the sense of family that pervades the house from top to bottom, a real expression of their client. “I didn’t want people to walk in and think, ‘This is a big house,’” says the homeowner. “This was going to be our home—not just a house. The whole thing was about family.” For Dick, that meant designing the layout with the couple’s grown children and grandchildren in mind. A large kitchen offers plenty of space for multiple cooks, and the second floor houses bedrooms for visiting family, including a room just for the grandkids. The lower level, which opens to the backyard’s built-in pool, features a large family room (complete with snack bar), a playroom for the kids, a mother-in-law suite and a media room for family movie night.

For Gail, it meant infusing the décor with meaning and history. She began before the house was even built, taking an inventory of her client’s existing furniture and noting measurements. It allowed her to request tweaks to the architect’s plans designed to fit specific pieces, such as the archway specifically built to house a pair of matching Chinese cabinets. But here, too, she took her cue from the homeowner, choosing a scheme of classic traditional with Chinese accents based on the homeowner’s Oriental rugs and collection of blue and white porcelain. Throughout the house, warm neutrals are punctuated by muted blues and pops of red. New pieces mingle with Chinese furniture and accessories purchased in Singapore, where the family lived for four years: An intricate screen and chest in the great room harmonize with Chinese Chippendale chairs; an old Chinese cradle sits next to modern cribs in the nursery and a mahjong table fits right in with the modern television and pool table in the family room, among countless others. Each piece recalls a story (such as the delicate basket purchased at Singapore’s Thieves’ Market and carefully flown home on the homeowner’s lap), filling the new house with the family’s history. “It was such a big part of our lives,” the homeowner says of her

family’s time living abroad. “And it influenced us in so many ways that we want it to always be part of our lives.” Gail extended the Chinese theme by adding new touches as well, such as the delicate wooden screen that frames the entrance to the sunken dining room and the bamboo wallpaper in the master bath. In the kitchen, old Chinese coins are set into the tilework above the range and the sink. And when the homeowner wanted the refrigerator to look like a Chinese cabinet, Gail designed a custom-made brass medallion to surround the appliance’s door handles. But she was careful not to let the décor outshine the graceful architecture and high-quality craftsmanship of the house. Window treatments, for example, were kept simple so as not to detract from the millwork of the windows and the spectacular view they frame. “A good designer does what the client wants,” Gail says. “But there’s a little bit of me in this house, too. I would jump at the chance to work with Dick and Glenn again; the collaboration was just absolutely wonderful.” And successful, given the family’s reaction to the home: “The kids didn’t grow up in this house,” says the homeowner, “but they absolutely love it.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

When they built their new home on four wooded acres four years ago, an O’Fallon, Ill., physician and his wife designed it with their 9-year-old son and 7-year-old triplets in mind.

Two years ago, they added an outdoor component to that living space that included a deck, children’s play yard, swimming pool, waterfall and covered, outdoor living room. “We wanted everything to look natural," the homeowner explains. "Rather than a waterfall flowing into a swimming pool, we wanted it to look like a stream splashing into a pond. We wanted our place to be the destination where all kids want to come and play because it works out well for us," the doctor adds.

While that’s a common sentiment for most parents, this couple had a special reason for wanting children to congregate at their home. One of the triplets, a daughter, is a special-needs child, and her parents were determined to have her be a part of family activities with their other children.

Jason Todd, landscape designer and project coordinator for Landscape St. Louis, got the call to create the space. Once he got to know the family and their needs, he was a man on a mission.

“I knew the family wanted to spend the majority of their life in this home and wanted it to be a destination: something outside the box,

not cookie cutter, but not too Disneyland,” says Jason.Jason was helped by the natural slope of the property and the

nearby woods. "The setting was perfect because of the existing tall trees and the natural ridge that ran along the north side of the property,” he says. “One of the things I hate is when landscape architects try to force things. We were fortunate to be able to tie into the existing landscape. I wanted multiple spaces for entertaining so that it would be comfortable when it was just the six of them but ensure they had additional spaces for entertaining when they had friends over.”

To unite the inside and outside of the property, Jason extended the Brazilian hardwood flooring from the kitchen and dining room onto the deck. Just off the deck, he created a play yard and large, open lawn to allow ample space for children to run. “It provides a nice overflow space from the deck,” he explains.

Wide, natural stone steps follow the slope of the lawn and the waterfall to connect the play yard and lawn with the pool area. When he designed the pool, Jason incorporated special features into the natural sandstone that surrounds the area to ensure that the entire family could fully enjoy the space.

“lagoon” that provides a wading area to ease children into the water. "Sometimes adults just want to sit and dangle their feet," he notes. "It's a good space for them too."

Elevated above the pool is a “mommy viewing area,” complete with graceful lounge chairs, which allows adults to sit and visit while having a clear view of the water at all times. Rather than a diving board, Jason, in keeping with the natural, woodland look of the space, provided a “diving rock” of natural sandstone that juts out over the pool.

"I was reliving my childhood days and thinking of doing cannonballs into the water," he reflects.

Plantings surrounding the pool are designed to be low maintenance and enhance the natural woodland setting. Grasses, sweet potato vines and tried-and-true begonias soften the hardscape and add bits of color. Outside the pool area, Jason has used a selection of flowering shrubs and evergreens, which gradually get larger until they melt into the tall trees of the nearby woods.

"I tried to constantly repeat the same materials and the same textures and colors to add unity to the project," he explains.

their lives. The fact that this project encompassed two years, beginning in late 2009 with the initial design, to 2010 with the pool installation, to 2011 with the final landscaping, was a huge plus according to the homeowner.

“Generally, I'd think that you wouldn’t want to do things in phases,” the doctor suggests. “But doing things in stages allowed us to afford each stage and to live with the space. After living with the pool for a period of time, we did things differently in the garden than we would have initially.”

While the entire family enjoys the pool and surrounding entertainment area, it has been especially meaningful for the couple’s special-needs daughter. Before the piece is installed, turn your underwater pool lights on and your filter off to best enjoy the effects of this type of arrangement. Pool arrangements become part of the entertainment. They stimulate conversation and make your guests feel lucky to be in attendance.Schedule the installation as close to the beginning of the party as possible. Flowers will “cook” in the intense St. Louis heat if they are installed too early in the day. Tropical flowers handle the summer heat better than most other flowers, so they are a good choice for floral pool displays. They bear the burden of heat stroke and sunburn better than a more delicate selection. Visual balance also can be achieved with multiple floating arrangements. They are usually smaller in size, but when installed in multiples, are just as impressive. Some even can be designed to hold candlelight, as long as someone is willing to get into the water and light the candles about an hour before the party is set to begin.

Floating Flowers Around the Party Floating flowers inside a clear glass bowl is another excellent option for outdoor table decorations. You also can place floating flowers in strategic areas throughout the party space. Adding a floating or pre-poured votive candle will enhance the effect once the sun goes down. This type of arrangement is very refreshing to look at and has a magical way of enhancing the comfort level of your guests on a warm summer’s night.

Outdoor Entertaining Flower Tips Setting out your centerpieces at a backyard soiree should be done as a last-minute finishing touch. Keep your table arrangements indoors until 30-45 minutes before your guests arrive. Fresh flowers arranged in a vase no longer have a root system and, consequently, find it difficult to maintain a healthy “body” temperature and hydration level if the outside temperature is over 70 degrees. The temperature of the air and the intensity of the sun can quickly dehydrate them and drain the blossoms of all their glorious energy if they are exposed to these harsh elements for hours on end. When creating party centerpieces, use short, chubby vases and short-stemmed flowers on the outside tables. Tall vases tend to tip over more often at an outdoor soiree. Outdoor parties tend to be more relaxed so your vases do not have to match. In fact, mixing different shapes and sizes of vases is often much more interesting, much more entertaining and much more relaxing than if your vases and candle holders are all the same. If you are planning to entertain several times during the summer, plant marigolds in your pots and on your patio borders in the spring. They are a very effective natural mosquito repellent. Consider mixing a stem or two of herbs in your vases with your garden blossoms for an earthy, refreshing scent. rosemary, lavender, mint and thyme are all good choices. And don’t forget to add a marigold or two to your vases to discourage mosquitoes while you are eating.

itting under the stone-covered pavilion in the back yard, it is easy to see why the homeowners chose to construct the open-air space. From its old world charm to the breathtaking views across

their neighbors’ backyards, the pavilion is the ideal spot to spend a summer evening. But they didn’t just decide one day that they wanted an

outdoor living space. The process was three years in the making. After building on to their original home several years ago, the homeowners knew they wanted to continue to expand their home into an outdoor area, and they were going to play an integral part in the design. “It was a prerequisite that we find people to work with who would let us be a big part of this project,” say the homeowners. “We wanted to be involved with the nuts and bolts of the whole process.” So they hired architect Lauren Strutman of Lauren Strutman Architects, whom they worked with on the expansion of their original home. “With Lauren it is a lot of give and take between us with our ideas,” the homeowners say. “We liked the feel we had working with her and

knew it would be a great relationship once again.” The team wasn’t quite complete, so they tapped contractor John Shea, Callier Thompson Shea Construction & Design, LLC, to execute the plan. John listened to the homeowners’ needs and helped them think the whole project through. The team developed several plans and looked at each aspect of the project before settling on the final design. The homeowners staked out their yard multiple times, getting a sense of the view they’d get from each location. Once the plan was set, they continued to put their mark on the pavilion by building scale models of the structure highlighting each detail as a reference for everyone working on the project. The models proved to be a useful resource for the various craftsmen constructing the pavilion. A crucial aspect to the homeowners was ensuring that the integrity of their original home carried over into their addition. mixture of bricks help the pavilion extend from the house in a seamless transition. Other intricate details, such as the concrete half-moon stone pieces in the corners, further tie the outdoor structure to the home. Architectural details were also important to the homeowners. Considerately placed niches on the back wall feature LED lights that illuminate the pavilion in the early morning and evening hours, extending the usability of the structure. A custom Azek pergola by Classical Services extends off the roof. Made of PVC covered in metal, the painted pergola will not rot and is virtually maintenance-free. The train station architectural style of the roofline is a signature detail of the pavilion, with a low pitch and high peak in the middle. “We spent a good deal of time driving around taking pictures of train stations,” the homeowner says. “We really took the time to think about each detail and how it fit with the rest of pavilion and the house.” The homeowners made sure not to force the construction and set an unnecessary deadline. “We plan on enjoying this pavilion forever,

so we were okay if it took longer to complete because we were doing what needed to be done to do it right,” they explain. The result is a homey, welcoming pavilion where the owners spend evenings sitting with their dogs reading and enjoying the quiet. Furnished with Hanamint couches and tables from Forshaw, the pavilion also is utilized for social gatherings with family and friends. The homeowners say they didn’t want something that was too big. The pavilion is spacious enough to host a large group, but intimate enough for the two of them. “This project really completed the whole home on a wonderful piece of property,” says Lauren Strutman. “The design reflects the homeowners’ creativity as well as my own.” Working together and being able to voice their ideas and opinions allowed these homeowners to create an outdoor oasis they can enjoy for years into the future. Peanut butter and jelly. Spaghetti and meatballs. Chips and dip. Some things are just meant to be together. In the summertime, the perfect pair is a relaxing outdoor kitchen and living space positioned next to a refreshing pool. After enhancing their backyard with a pool and concrete pad in 2010, the owners of this gorgeous backyard retreat knew their next addition would be a space to unwind and entertain. Looking for a spot to spend most of their summer days and evenings, this summer will be spent relishing their new outdoor kitchen. From contract to completion, this backyard appendage took just six weeks. The homeowners met Brock Harvey and Kevin Miller from Work Horse Construction Group at the St. Louis Home & Garden Show, and were quickly impressed with their ideas for their kitchen addition. They looked to them for design ideas and inspiration. “We told them we were looking for a place to grill and entertain, but we wanted them to

treat this project like it was their own house,” the homeowner says. “They came up with practical, unique ideas, including the addition of a fire pit, which will really help us extend the use of the living space.” After approving the final plans and getting the necessary permits and approval from the county, Work Horse began transforming the area into a summer hot spot. Starting with a blank 12’ x 16’ stamped-concrete patio canvas, the team began constructing the pavilion. The homeowners were looking for a maintenance-free roof structure, so Work Horse wrapped the frame in aluminum and vinyl to match the exterior of the home aiming for a seamless transition between the structures. Next, an electrician and plumber installed the infrastructure for the electric and gas. A custom kitchen island was built and set into place, and a Canyon Stone veneer from Outdoor Living was applied to the island for a full masonry look. A 3cm Black Pearl granite

counter top with an eased edge by Hallmark Stone finished the island. To complete the project, a Pacific Gas Specialties (PGS) grill and side burner were installed along with a Firegear fire pit to keep everyone warm after a late night dip in the pool. The kitchen also features an ice chest and doors and drawers by Pacific Coast Manufacturing (PCM). A TV and stereo make it easy to catch the ball game while enjoying the outdoors. All of the appliances are by C. Bennett Building Supply. Planning to spend many lazy summer days and evenings in their new space, the homeowners couldn’t be more pleased with the addition in their backyard. “Work Horse really went above and beyond in working with us,” the homeowner says. “They made our outdoor addition into more than a kitchen; it really is an outdoor living area.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

As the “Weinbergspfirsich” (vineyard peach bush) starts to bloom and nature begins its spring renewal in the sunny hills that are part of Germany’s fabled Mosel wine region, the Huesgen family sits down to a traditional Sunday brunch that has sustained nine generations of this wine family at Villa Huesgen. Their antique-laden, natural light-filled dining room is picture perfect for such a meal – stained-glass windows and a Belle-Epoch chandelier overlook a traditional German wooden table, chairs and built-in corner china cabinets and sideboards. The villa itself was built in the classical Art Nouveau style by famed German architect Bruno Mohring and is considered among the best examples of this highly stylized architecture in the world.

The table for the feast is set with the family’s heirloom Meissen Zwiebelmuster (onion) china pattern that, with its bright “sky blue” design on a white background, perfectly matches the simple and sophisticated blue and white label on the dark blue-tinted glass of the elegantly long and slender Villa Huesgen wine bottles. This is the typical shape for German Riesling bottles, but the wine inside is anything but ordinary!

Three of the family’s wines are currently available in the United States. The Villa Huesgen Kabinett Riesling is a complex and full-bodied wine

with pronounced flavors of crisp citrus fruits and hints of sun-dried apricots and peaches. The wine pairs very well with the Cheese Balls (made with sour cream, grated hard German cheese, garlic and chives) and the Chestnut Cream (fresh goat cheese, roasted chestnuts, garlic and honey) that are staples at the German holiday table. A “Saverin” (molded, hollow bread, usually filled with stewed fruits and topped with whipped cream) starts the meal, followed by caviar with toast and sour cream, chilled salmon in mustard-dill sauce and marinated, rolled veal roast, which is sliced and served cold with a tuna/anchovies/egg mayonnaise. The above dishes are accompanied by the family’s Schiefer Riesling, which is redolent of clean and complex flavors, especially apricots, peaches and a minerality that lends itself to both salty dishes and fish. The 9 Generations Riesling always has a “pride of place” at the Huesgen table, named in honor of the family’s long and rich history making wine in a special micro-climate within Mosel.

St. Louisans have been shopping at farmers markets since 1779, when the Soulard Market began as a meadow where farmers could sell their fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat products. Today, you can find dozens of markets across the area that carry fresh produce, plants, flowers and crafts. While visiting a farmers market might require a little more effort, the benefits are totally worth it. Not only are you purchasing food that is local, but it is usually not more than a few days off the farm, allowing you to enjoy the exceptional taste and nutritional value. Farmers markets replenish their stock every few days, ensuring you are getting only the finest and freshest products. Chris Wimmer, farmer at The Farm at Kraut Run, has been farming for 17 years. His 10-acre farm, located in St. Charles, produces organic produce, pigs, chickens, goats and ducks. You can find him at the Ellisville and Lake Saint Louis farmers markets. Chris says the benefit of buying goods from a farmer at the market is that you get quality you don’t find in a grocery store. “The food we produce is beautiful to look at, the colors are amazing and the vitamin content is off the charts compared to conventional growing,” Wimmer says. “Customers can find food that they just can’t find anywhere else in terms of quality, freshness and variety.” Getting your food straight from the source allows you to ask the farmer specific questions about where your food is coming from and if the farmer used pesticides, hormones, antibiotics or other additives. the Kirkwood Farmers Market since it began in 1976. Her family’s produce stand was one of the first at the market. Karen Mary says shopping at the farmers market allows you to find out information about your food straight from the source. “at the market, you get expert advice on what is good and what is not,” she says. “We help you select the best product for you in terms of how you’re using it and when you’ll be eating it.” The markets are now carrying more organic foods. Many will mark the products as organic, but you always can consult with the farmer or vendor to be certain. You also will find more of a variety of foods at the market than you would in a grocery store, including varieties of tomatoes, lettuce or corn that you may never have heard of. Shopping at a farmers market doesn’t just benefit you. Buying local strengthens Missouri’s farmers and farming communities. Help area farmers sustain their livelihood in tough economic times. Purchasing goods at the farmers market also helps the environment. Food does not have to be shipped as far, thus reducing pollution and fuel usage. Be a smart shopper. Before heading to the market, decide how often you plan to visit to restock your supply. Next, determine what you need. Don’t let your eyes become bigger than your stomach. While everything will look amazing, you don’t want to be wasteful. Buy only what you know you will be able to eat before your next trip. Wimmer also says to come to market and lose the idea of cost shopping. “Goods at the farmers market are a whole different product and you can’t compare the costs to a grocery store because the food is not the same.," he says. If you have never visited a farmers market, summer is a great time to go. Wander through the market and enjoy the friendly ambiance, and pick up a few foods to try.

» If you are looking for a specific fruit or vegetable to be organic, be sure to ask the farmer. Some label their products.

» I find it is only appropriate to barter with prices if you are planning on purchasing very large quantities. You don’t want to insult anyone or feel out of line. Just let them offer you a deal; it happens often.

» Make friends with farmers that are at the market each time. they are your best resource for education, recipes and connecting you to a better way of life.

» Bring the whole family and get the ones you love in on this. You can provide a positive, lifelong impression on today’s youth to ensure that they won’t be as “out-of-touch” as many of us have become. Many times I have been invited to farms and encouraged to bring friends, and each trip has been memorable and educational.
