This catalogue is to present Stix – a font which acts more like a set of arrangable graphic elements than an actual font.Stix are best used like sorts in letterpress printing where each sort was inserted manually. Stix was also designed to serve as any kind of title writing, logo etc. What makes the font original are the long shapes of the letters which give the font an allonged look. Apart from its appearance Stix is a very practical font because it is possible to fit a lot of information in a small line (Stix is dense with almost no spacing between the letters). The best way to use Stix is manually arrange the letters or making spacing denser. Stix can have various uses ranging from logos to illustrations.

sposób aranżować. Stix można używać jak tradycyjną czcionkę, którą się

KOLORCOLOUR

Barbara Górska urodziła się w 1986 roku. Jest studentką Wydziału Grafiki Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie, gdzie mieszka od 7 lat. Szkołę podstawową i gimnazjum ukończyła w Niemczech, gdzie uczęszczała również do szkoły plastycznej dla młodzieży (Jugendkunst-schule). To był jej pierwszy poważniejszy kon-takt ze sztuką. Przez kolejne lata oddawała się dwóm pasjom: rysunkowi i językom obcym. Po powrocie do Polski rozpoczęła studia na Ling-wistyce Stosowanej na WSE im. Ks. Tisch-nera i równolegle na Filologii Tureckiej na UJ w Krakowie. Zainteresowanie językiem tureckim zaprowadziło ją do Stambułu, który od zawsze fascynował ją swoją kulturą i niepowtarzalną atmosferą. Spędziła tam 6 miesięcy studiując na Uniwersytecie Marmara. Po ukończeniu studiów lingwistycznych zaczęła realizować swoją drugą pasję i od 2008 roku jest studentką Wydziału Grafiki krakowskiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych.

Barbara Gorska was born in 1986. She is a Graphics student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where she has been living for 7 years. Barbara attended prima-ry school and junior high in Germany. It is also there that she attended an art related school. This was her first encounter with art. Since then she has had two passions: foreign languages and drawing. After she returned to Poland she studied Applied Lin-guistics at TEU in Kraków and Turcology at UJ. Her keen interest in the Turkish lan-guage lead her to Istanbul, a place she was inspired by. Barbara spent 6 months in Istanbul studying at Marmara University. After her graduation from Applied Linguis-tics in 2008 she applied for Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and has been studying Graphics since then.

Color plays an important role while using STIX. There are two ways of using color; the first is one is “minimalistic”. It means that only the as few letters as possible are coloured in order to enhance legibility. This method is best when the letters are overlapping.

MAKING OF

The idea for Stix came in 2008 when Barbara was doing assignments for a class. She found that it would be quiet interesting to draw letters that intersect and intertwine with each other and whose meaning would be legible in the upper part of the given letter. She kept the rather rough sketches to realize a font on her 2nd year of studies. The process of making STIX was long but in the end a very elegant letter came into being.

Pomysł na litery STIX pojawił się w roku 2008 podczas pracy. Barbara zauważyła, że ciekawa

byłby ciąg liter, które się zakładają na siebie,

których czytelność zależałaby od górnej

części litery. Zachowała więc szkice i przystąpiła do

realizacji fontu na drugim roku studiów. Proces

powstawania STIX był długi ale w rezultacie udało

się stworzyć elegancki alfabet spełniający wstępne założenia.

The second way of using colour is to emphasize the given word(s) used in the sentence/word. In this case it is better to use a bigger spacing. If too many colours are used the sentence/word may be illegible.

Drugi sposób użycia koloru ma na celu podkreślenie słowa/słów w napisie. W tym

wypadku lepiej nie zakładać liter i nie nadużywać koloru, gdyż wtedy napis

może stać się nieczytelny.
