Stitching points before you buy your
sewing machine
How do you know which machine is just apt for you? If
you were to put down three factors that have the most relevance to the point
of buying an automatic sewing machine, it would have to be the needs you
have with the machine, the skills you have to make the most out of the
machine and lastly the budget that you have kept aside to buy such a machine.
Of course, you can buy the machine first and then hone your skills or even start
learning how to stitch, but the preferable route would be to learn the basic
before hand and advance yourself with tutorials that are present online.
1. Things you need from the machine: Buying an established brand is very
important when you are buying a home appliance; look for well known
names like Usha because you would not get a compromise on quality.
Buying from a retail store offline would not give you a price advantage,
so if that is what you need – look up an online store that sells and
delivers in your area. When you are buying, look up the warranty details
and the return policies that are on offer too. Once the machine arrives,
you can check with different fabric to know if they stitch evenly and if
they are comfortable for you to use.
2. The right needle goes a long way: Using a needle that is not suited for
the Sewing machine or the fabric can cause some serious damage to
both. An ideal method would be to change the needle whenever you are
changing the fabric or when you are done with a specific project. In case
you are continuing with a single project or fabric, it should last a year to
switch needles provided you use it quite frequently. Look at the different
features that can be added to your machine too. For example, you
would want to the automatic button hole maker on your automatic
sewing machine. It would help you sew a button in single move and
would not require a change in movement, it can even allow you to add
the button to the machine via a slot and the sewing machine would fit it
on. Remember, this is not a mandatory feature but should be an option
if you want to have it added. Similarly, you want to have speed control
and a presser feet that helps you regulate the speed at which the fabric
is being stitched and also how tightly the fabric is being held.
3. Budget: You would get Sewing machines across different budgets and
packages, the key would be to keep it within the said needs you have.
Buying a basic machine would not help you much if you are looking at
doing extensive work and similarly, having an advanced or expensive
machine would be wasted if you do not use it efficiently.
If you are passionate about stitching, research about the different techniques
you would adopt while stitching and the machines that support them. It is one
of the best hobbies to have and gives you an amazing sense of achievement
each time you complete a design.
