NOTE
There are two differentvarieties of button covers onthe market. One uses a simpcup and lid to position thefabric and press the shank inplace. The second has teetharound the edge that grabthe fabric while you push theshank in place. Either varietywill work well for this project.
Cut out the felt front and patterned
cotton inside pieces. Cut the two
yellow inside needle strips with regular
scissors, and then use pinking sheers
to cut the two smaller purple strips.
Follow enclosed instructions to iron
Heat and Bond fusible interfacing to the
underside of the cotton scrap. Use the
templates on page 112 to cut the bird out
of the backed cotton. Next cut both the
wing and beak templates from the felt
scraps.
2 Place the front and back pieces right
side up on your work surface. Sta ck the
smaller felt strips over the larger ones.
Pin them to the cotton positioning one
pair 3⁄4" (1.9cm) from the top and the
second 13⁄4" (4.5cm) up from the bottom.
The pieces are offset so that when the
finished case is folded in half the rows
of needle will stack over each other.
Remove the paper backing from the bird
and iron it to the felt front, 11⁄4" (3.2cm)
from the base. Tie each end of the elastic
in an overhand knot.
Interior detail
One of the first steps in becoming a sewer is to equip yourself as one. Losing track of your sewing
needles can be a dangerous event. This handy case has a protective cardboard lining and two
rows of felt to pierce your needles i nto. The clever leg closure is simply an elastic loop that hooks
over a handmade fabric-covered button. Whether you slip it in your sewing bag or take pride in
displaying it on your coffee table, you’ll always know where your needles are.

Set your sewing machine to a medium
(3) zigzag stitch with the smallest stitch
length (0-1). Starting on the center back of
the bird position the needle at the fabric
edge, the stitch should stretch between
the felt and fabric straddling the cut
edge. Stitch around the bird, lifting thepresser foot as needed. When you reach
the middle of the bird’s head, lift the
presser foot, insert the beak and continue
stitching so the edge of the beak becomes
trapped in your stitches. Return the
machine to a straight stitch and medium
stitch length to sew the felt wing over the
fabric bird.
Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions to cover the button in
coordinating fabric and then hand
stitch it over the base of the wing. Hand
stitch the E bead eye to the birds head.
Make two straight seams to connect
each pair of needle strips to the cotton.

4 Place the front and back pieces right
side up on your work surface. Stack the
smaller felt strips over the larger ones.
Pin them to the cotton positioning
one pair 3⁄4" (1.9cm) from the top and
the second 13⁄4" (4.5cm) up from the
bottom. The pieces are offset so that
when the finished case is folded in half
the rows of needle will stack over each
other. Remove the paper backing from
the bird and iron it to the felt front, 11⁄4"
(3.2cm) from the base. Tie each end of
the elastic in an overhand knot.
5Trim the excess fabric from the corners and turn
the needle case right side out, Use a knittingneedle or stuffing stick to help push out the
corners. Insert the cardboard rectangles into the
sleeve. Fold a 1⁄4" (6mm) of the felt and fabric
edges under and hand stitch the opening closed.
Optional – Embellish the inside of the cas e by
hand stitching a decorative felt flowers with a
button center to one side of a needle strip.
