STIS Coronagraphy-Pushing the Limits

•  Open up new coronagraphic modes/techniques to be competitive with current ground-based coronagraphs

•  By pushing to the photon limit of STIS’s coronagraphic PSF, we can achieve 10-6 contrast or better for a reasonable number of orbits

•  Unique qualities of STIS compared to the ground: – Access to northern targets – No magnitude limits to contrast – Total intensity visible light

Program 14426 Observing Setup

•  Special Calibration Program 14426 (Cycle 23) •  9 external orbits on HD 38393

–  3 blocks of 3 contiguous 1-orbit visits –  Each visit with a different spacecraft orientation—apply Azimuthal

Differential Imaging (ADI) –  Within each visit, 3x3 dither pattern behind BAR5 –  1024x90 pixel subarray to minimize buffer dumps

•  Dither Pattern to mitigate miscenterings/non-repeatabilities •  Dither pattern+orientation changes optimized for post-

processing (i.e. KLIP, LOCI) •  Creates reference library for solar type stars (currently

missing in GO programs) •  Website/STAN published March 8, 2016 – in time for Cycle

24 •  ISR in progress •  BAR5 supported mode in APT for Cycle 24

Other Work Currently in Progress

•  Lifetime extension work –  Started review of mechanism lifetime –  No obvious issues identified with preliminary review –  Draft report to determine pointing requirements in case of

single FGS operations –  Investigation of Calibration Lamp dimming—ISR in

progress •  Updating NUV, FUV time dependent sensitivity trends in

reference files •  Monitoring of STIS focus—ISR in progress •  Continued investigation into Echelle Blaze Function shifts •  New Gain measurements for CCD Amps A, C, and D (no

significant changes)—ISR in progress

Future Vision for STIS

•  STIS is entering Year 20 •  It’s time to be aggressive in identifying new modes/

methods in areas where STIS is unique before it goes away

•  The STUC and the broader community partnering with our team is key through: –  Increased advertisement of outsourced calibration

programs –  Increased communication with core STIS science

communities •  The time is now!

Adding BAR5 to APT

•  BAR5 now supported in Cycle 24 APT •  Used one orbit of 14426 to verify updates to SIAF files/APT updates •  Visit A9 executed nominally on Feb. 22 •  A9 indistinguishable from Visits 7 and 8 of the program taken just

before •  Sub-pixel grid dither step size appears to have slight non-

repeatabilities
