Spring has sprung in the Grand Valley and that can mean only one thing…JUCO baseball is right around the corner! For Western Slope baseball fans, this is the absolute best time of year!

Folks are already stocking up on peanuts and sun block in anticipation of dawn to dusk play by the best junior college teams in the country. The Chamber along with the City is proud to be a co-sponsor of this signature event. It was a partnership between our two entities and the literally hundreds of volunteers that brought this tournament to the community over fifty years ago and has kept it here. It is now hard to imagine Memorial Day in Grand Junction without JUCO and I want to publicly thank the JUCO Committee, the service club hosts and all the others who make this event possible each year. Partnerships like the ones that brought us JUCO are still an important strategy for the Chamber in helping create a favorable business environment. I was reminded of that last month when the Chamber Executive Committee met with members of the City Council to take a look at the future and how we can work together to stimulate local business activity. It came to my mind again on the last day of April when I

had the opportunity to view the newly created Housing Strategy. While the Chamber acted as the fiscal agent, this was actually an effort of over a dozen local organizations and businesses to develop tools for meeting the needs of our workers for adequate and affordable housing. Notwithstanding the current economic conditions, attainable housing will continue to be an urgent need that must be met if we are to be successful in building a strong local economy now and going forward. It is important to recognize how well we all play together in the sandbox from time to time. Often those efforts are not the ones that garner headlines or news stories. Our Chamber has a long history of creating partnerships that can make this a better place to live and do business. Sometimes we forget that in the heat of fleeting disagreements over policies or programs and that is a shame. So, as we fire up the barbeque grills and listen for a favored refrain it is wise to remember that “Play Ball” refers to more than a sporting event. As the slogan use to be when I was a kid around here - Go, Go JUCO!

Apply Now for Leadership Class “This class opened my eyes to how various sectors of the community are connected and impacted by each other…I never knew!” “Before taking this class I knew I wanted to do something for the community but now I have a much clearer idea of how I can use my talents and interests to make this a better place.” “Being relatively new to the area I found this experience invaluable in introducing me to the community and to some new friends and professional colleagues I can call on in the future.”

These are just a few of the comments that past class members have made about the Mesa County Leadership Program. It was formed to educate future leaders of Mesa County about the community, in which they live, work and play. This ten month program touches on important subjects such as Water in the West, local, county and state government, health care, the non profit sector and much more. In addition there is team building and leadership skill development. Over 100 outstanding local leaders have graduated from the program. Currently the Chamber is seeking applicants for the 2009/2010 class beginning in September 2009 and ending, May 2010. Applications are available

to download online at www.gjchamber.org or if you’d like to discuss the program in greater detail contact Diane at the Chamber office, 970.242.3214.

2009 Leadership Class Non-Profit Day

Housing Strategies Detailed On April 30th representatives of the dozen governmental, non-profit and private sector entities that funded development of a strategy to encourage increasing the amount and style of diversity in attainable housing for the Valley’s workforce gathered to hear the results of the nine month study. Among the various recommendations that were included in the final report were:

Improve the development • process by promoting a pro business philosophy, creating a program for density bonuses, analyzing various jurisdictions’ codes to determine where costs outweigh the public benefit, create turnkey plans for private development and providing ongoing monitoring of housing supply and demand

Quantify the benefits of higher • densities and the costs of doing nothing

Survey for housing •

preferences and present workshops on how to meet market demand

Create incentive programs for • affordable housing

Acquire land in strategic • areas and make it ready for development by the private sector

Work with regional lenders • to create a loan fund pool for projects

Appoint a task force to • monitor and advance the housing strategy

Various entities will be reviewing the final report and determining which recommendations to proceed with at this time of economic change and opportunity.

Rig Tours and Roan Plateau Tours Dust off your hiking boots. With spring now here, the Chamber will resume its popular energy tours starting in May while continuing to offer informative energy briefings. Join us in May for both an energy briefing and/or a rig tour. On May 13, 7:30 a.m. representatives from the office of US Senator Mark Udall will be at the Chamber to discuss some of the latest issues and legislation being discussed in Congress regarding America’s energy industry. Then, on May 22 the Chamber will host an up close and personal tour of a natural gas drilling rig, an excellent opportunity to see first hand how the drilling process works. Or if a tour of the Roan Plateau interests you more, reserve your space now for this June 25 tour. Reservations for tours are limited and are based on a first-come first-serve basis. There is no cost to attend but reservations are required and can be made by calling Ryan Longman at 970-263-2917.

Dallas GrabowInsurance Advisors Agency

The Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce has given us the opportunity to directly express our concerns and feedback to the

State Capitol. These are hot topics that directly affect our customers such as more health insurance mandates increasing the cost of insurance, customers still unable to work with a local doctor that will accept their insurance, and the growing number of uninsured. Not only are we able to converse with our CO State Senator, Josh Penry, and Representatives King and Bradford; but also during the Chamber legislative trip we were able to talk directly with several state legislators from other Colorado districts. With the volatility and consequences of politics this is not only important but becoming a necessity.

Matt VezzaMarathon Oil Company

The Chamber has been an invaluable asset to our company and to this community by being a supportive

ally and voice at the State Capitol as we addressed changes to the State Oil and Gas Regulations that will effect the Grand Junction area and most of the West Slope of Colorado. Knowing that there are friends who will travel all the way to Denver to make their voices heard is very encouraging.

Jody AtchleyRocky Mountain Health Plans

The Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce provides Rocky Mountain Health Plans many opportunities to interact with our state legislators

and other policy makers on health care issues. By working through the Chamber’s effective communication channels, we are able to provide our policy makers a perspective which combines a business focus and health care delivery expertise. This integrated dialog and exchange of ideas helps keep health care costs down for employers and all the citizens in our community.

Rob CosePetty Construction Co. LLC

Being involved with the Chamber, specifically the Governmental Affairs Committee has helped our company to operate

a small business but still have valuable input in the legislative process. Many things become law before most small companies realize they are even being considered with great effect on the business atmosphere. The video conferences as well as the legislative trip allows companies to have more one on one discussions with our legislators both in the state as well as on a national level. It also allows a company to track bills and happenings in our legislature as they move through the process. The key to the Chamber is not only to be a member but to be involved.

Roger McClellandPartyLand of Grand Junction

The Chamber leadership and staff provide outstanding resources and service to me as business owner and citizen.

Because of their dedication to consistent professionalism, they know first-hand the problems business managers face on every front. We don’t have the time necessary to sort out the implications of most of the proposals. The Chamber folks listen to a variety of voices, thoroughly research the issue and finally speak from a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Dena WatsonPremier Property Management

I work with the Chamber through two organizations. First, Premier Property Management has received many

referrals and leads for new people moving into our area. We have built our list of clients by receiving great leads through networking events such as Friday Morning Leads group. Secondly, the local chapter of NARPM (National Association of Residential Property Managers) strongly relies on the Chamber as an advocate to our local and state governments. The voice of the Grand Junction Area Chamber is a loud and strong resource that allows us to be heard on the Front Range. GJACC has so many educational and networking opportunities, the membership is invaluable.

Welcome to Chamber Voices, each month we will ask selected members a question about key business issues in the community and showcase their answers so you can see what your neighbors are thinking. If you’d like to be a part of this effort, let us know by sending an email to [email protected].

Question: How does the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce’s advocacy efforts help your business?

You Can’t Afford NOT to Network! We know that money is tight and times are a bit tough for many of the Chamber’s small business members these days. That was the reason that we went back and reviewed our pricing schedule for the various Chamber networking and lead generating events and activities. Members can already post coupons at no cost on the Chamber website or get expert advice from fellow Chamber members during our ASK afternoons. They can also join a leads group and/or attend a Business After Hours for less than $10 a month and take a 60 minute class on online networking for $10. In the course of our review we were able to negotiate a more favorable rate for our Networking at Noon events as well. These monthly luncheons allow ample opportunity for relationship building, and now cost members $15. That is the same or less than what lunch out at your favorite restaurant would cost! The next Networking at Noon will be May 20th. So…what are you waiting for…use your Chamber connection and network your way to more business!

Chamber Schedules Next China Trip Tours of the Forbidden City, a hike along the Great Wall and tours of jade and silk factories were just the beginning of a lifetime experience for the 40 participants in the Chamber’s recent trip to China. It was springtime in China with the peonies in bloom and weather in the 70s. Based on the feedback of these participants, the Chamber has booked another China trip for Spring of 2010 with a Grand Junction departure date of April 6-7. The itinerary and pricing will be much the same with the addition of an optional trip to Xian to view the Terra Cotta soldiers for another $450. The purpose of these trips is to offer a familiarization and initial experience for business owners and community members. Included in the itinerary are sightseeing excursions and factory tours. If you are interested in receiving an email update as plans for this next effort are finalized, please contact Shari Brown ([email protected] or 970-263-2919).
