SAFETY REGULATIONS

Read carefully before using the ma-chine.

A) TRAINING

1) Read the instructions carefully. Be familiar with the controls andthe proper use of the equipment. Learn how to stop the enginequickly.2) Only use the machine for the purpose for which it was made,that is, the cutting and collection of grass. Any use not specificallyindicated in the Operator’s Manual can be dangerous and result indamage to the machine, and will also result in the annulling of thewarranty and the manufacturer declining all responsibility.3) Never allow children or people unfamiliar with these instruc-tions to use the machine. Local regulations may restrict the age ofthe operator.4) Never use the machine:– when people, especially children, or pets are nearby.– if the operator has taken medicine or substances that can affect

his ability to react and concentrate.5) Keep in mind that the operator or user is responsible for acci-dents or hazards occurring to other people or their property. 6) Do not carry passengers.7) The operator of a machine must carefully follow the drivinginstructions, particularly:– the need for care and concentration when using machines;– that control of a machine sliding on a slope will not be regained

by the application of the brake. The main reasons for loss of control are:– insufficient wheel grip;

WARNING!

EN

1. SAFETY

Page 4: STIGA TORNADO COMBI USER MANUAL

4

– being driven too fast;– inadequate braking;– the type of machine is unsuitable for its task;– lack of awareness of the effect of ground conditions, especially

slopes;8) The machine is equipped with a series of safety microswitchesand devices which must never be removed, altered or tamperedwith. Removing these devices invalidates the warranty and themanufacturer declines any responsibility.

B) PREPARATION

1) While mowing, always wear substantial footwear and longtrousers. Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearingopen sandals.2) Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be usedand remove all objects which may be thrown by the machine(stones, sticks, metal wire, bones, etc.)3) WARNING: DANGER! - Engine fuel is highly flammable:– store fuel in containers specifically designed for this purpose;– refuel using a funnel and outdoors only. Do not smoke while

refuelling or whenever handling the fuel;– add fuel before starting the engine. Never remove the cap of the

fuel tank or add fuel while the engine is running or when theengine is hot;

– if fuel is spilled, do not attempt to start the engine but move themachine away from the area of spillage and avoid creating anysource of ignition until the fuel has evaporated and the fumesdispersed;

– replace caps of all fuel tanks and containers securely.4) Replace faulty silencers.5) Before using, always carry out a visual inspection, particularlyof the blade, seeing that the screws and cutter assembly are notworn or damaged. Replace a worn or damaged blade and screwsas a set to preserve balance.6) Before mowing, attach the discharge opening guards (grass-catcher or stone-guard).

C) OPERATION

1) Do not operate the engine in a confined space where danger-ous carbon monoxide fumes can collect.2) Mow only in daylight or good artificial light.3) Avoid operating the equipment in wet grass, where feasible.4) Before starting the engine, disengage the blade, shift the gearlever ( for mechanical transmission) or the speed change lever( for hydrostatic transmission) into neutral and engage the park-ing brake.5) Do not use on slopes of more than 10° (17%).6) Remember there is no such thing as a “safe” slope. Travel ongrass slopes requires particular care. To guard against overturning:– it is advisable to use a front counterweight (supplied on

request);– do not stop or start suddenly when going up or downhill;– engage clutch slowly, always keep the machine in gear ( for

mechanical transmission) or engage the speed change leverslowly both for forward and reverse movement ( for hydro-static transmission), especially when travelling downhill;

– machine speeds should be kept low on slopes and during tightturns;

– stay alert for humps and hollows and other hidden hazards;– never mow across the face of the slope.7) Stop the blade rotating and put the cutting deck into the high-est position before crossing surfaces other than grass. 8) Never use the machine to cut grass if the guards are defective,or without the stone-guard and/or grass-catcher in place.9) Do not change the engine governor settings or overspeed theengine.10) Before leaving the operator’s position:– disengage the blade;– change into neutral ( for mechanical transmission) or make

sure that the speed change lever has returned to the neutralposition ( for hydrostatic transmission) and engage the park-ing brake;

– stop the engine and remove the key.11) Disengage the blade, stop the engine and remove key:

– before carrying out any work beneath the cutting deck orunclogging the collector channel;

– before checking, cleaning or working on machine;– after striking a foreign object. Inspect the machine for damage

and make repairs before restarting and operating the machine;– if the machine starts to vibrate abnormally (immediately check

and remove the cause of the vibration).12) Disengage the blade when transporting or not in use.Disengage the blade and wait for it to stop before emptying thegrass-catcher.13) Stop the engine and disengage the blade:– before refuelling;– every time the grass-catcher is removed or replaced.14) Reduce the throttle setting before stopping the engine andturn the fuel off at the conclusion of mowing, following the instruc-tions in the manual.15) Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Keepclear of the discharge opening at all times.

D) MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE

1) Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to be sure the equipmentis in safe working condition. Regular maintenance is essential forsafety and for maintaining performance levels.2) Never store the equipment with fuel in the tank inside a build-ing where fumes may reach a flame or a spark or a source ofextreme heat.3) Allow the engine to cool before storing in an enclosed space.4) To reduce the fire hazard, keep the engine, exhaust silencer,battery compartment and fuel storage area free of grass, leaves,or excessive grease. Always empty the grass-catcher and do notleave garden rubbish containers inside a room.5) Frequently check the stone-guard, the grass-catcher and theair intake grill for wear and deterioration. Replace if damaged.6) For reasons of safety, do not use equipment with worn or dam-aged parts. Parts are to be replaced and not repaired. Use genu-ine spare parts (the blade should always bear the symbol ).

Parts which are not of an equivalent quality can damage theequipment and may adversely affect your safety.7) If the fuel tank has to be drained, this should be done outdoorsand when the engine is cool.8) Wear strong work gloves when removing and reassembling theblade.9) Check the blade’s balance after sharpening.10) When the machine is to be parked, stored or left unattended,lower the cutting deck.11) The ignition key must never be left inserted in the machine, orwhere children or persons not familiar to the machine may reachit. Before any maintenance or repair, remove the ignition key.

E) TRANSPORTING

neutral («N»);– disengage the blade;– on slopes, engage the parking brake:

Afterwards:

– put the accelerator lever to «CHOKE», as shown on thelabel, if the engine is cold. If the engine is already warm, putthe lever between «SLOW» and «FAST»;

– put in the key and turn to «ON» to make electrical contact,then turn to «START» to start the engine. Release once theengine has started.

When the engine is running, put the accelerator into the«SLOW» position.

The choke must be closed as soon asthe engine is running smoothly. Using it when the engine isalready warm can foul the spark plugs and cause the engineto run erratically.

If there are engine starting problems, donot insist as you can risk running the battery flat and floodingthe engine. Turn the key to «OFF», wait for a few secondsand then repeat the operation. If the malfunction persists,refer to the engine manual and chapter «8» in this manual.

Always bear in mind that the safety de-vices prevent the engine from starting if safety requirementshave not been met ( 5.3.7).In these cases, once the situation has been corrected, thekey must first be turned back to «OFF» before the enginecan be restarted.

5.2.2 Moving without mowing

The machine has not been approvedfor use on public roads. It has to be used (as indicatedby the highway code) in private areas closed to traffic.

When moving the machine, the blademust be disengaged and the cutting deck put at its highestposition (position «7»).

Put the accelerator control between the «SLOW» and«FAST» positions, and the gear change lever in the 1stspeed position.

Keep the pedal pressed down and disengage the parkingbrake. Slowly release the pedal which will turn from«brake» to «clutch», thus operating the rear wheels.

The pedal has to be released gradually as a suddenengagement may cause tipping up and loss of control ofthe vehicle.

Gradually reach the desired operating speed using theaccelerator and gear lever. To change the gear speed theclutch must be used pushing the pedal down half way.

Put the accelerator control between the «SLOW» and«FAST» positions. Press the brake pedal to disengage theparking brake and release the pedal.

Move the speed change lever in the «F» direction and go tothe required speed by using the lever and the accelerator.The lever must be moved gradually as a sudden engage-ment of drive to the wheels may cause tipping and loss ofcontrol of the machine.

5.2.3 Braking

To brake, first reduce the speed on the accelerator to avoidoverloading the brake assembly and then push the pedaldown fully.

To brake, press the brake pedal which will simultaneouslymake the speed change lever return to the «N» position.

5.2.4 Reverse

The machine MUST be stopped before reverse can be en-gaged. Push down the pedal until the machine stops andthen insert reverse by moving the lever sideways and put-ting it into position «R». Gradually release the pedal to en-gage the clutch and then begin moving in reverse.

The machine MUST be stopped before reverse can be en-gaged. When the machine is stopped, start the reverse mo-vement by putting the speed change lever in the «R» direc-tion.

5.3 GRASS CUTTING

5.3.1 Engaging the blade and forward movement

When you have reached the area to be mowed,

– put the accelerator into the «FAST» position;– engage the blade by putting the lever into position «B»;– to begin moving, operate the speed regulation controls tak-

ing care to release the pedal very gradually and with particu-lar caution as already described.

Engage the blade with the cutting deck in the highest position,and then gradually lower to the height required. To achievegood collection and even cutting of the grass, choose a for-ward speed to suit the quantity of grass to be cut (height anddensity) and the lawn's humidity, in line with the following indi-cations ( for mechanical transmission):

– High and dense grass - wet lawn 1st speed– Average condition grass 2nd - 3rd speed– Low grass - dry lawn 4th speed

The fifth gear is solely for moving fromone area to another on horizontal surfaces.

The speed has to be adapted to the condition of the grassin a gradual and progressive way by moving the speedchange lever.

The speed should always be reduced if you note a reduction inengine speed, since a forward speed that is too fast will not

cut the grass well.Disengage the blade and put the cutting deck in the highestposition whenever you need to get past an obstacle.

5.3.2 Cutting height adjustment

The height is adjusted by moving the lever with 7 height posi-tions.

5.3.3 Lawn maitenance

1. To keep a lawn green, soft and attractive, it should be cutregularly without damaging the grass. A lawn can be com-posed of different types of grass. If the lawn is cut fre-quently, grass and roots grow more vigorously, forming asolid grassy bed.If the lawn is cut is less frequently, higher grass andweeds start growing (plus daisies and clovers, etc.).

2. It is always better to cut the grass when dry.3. The blades must be in good condition and well sharpened

so that the grass is cut straight without a ragged edgethat leads to yellowing at the ends.

4. The engine must run at full speed, both to ensure a sharpcut of the grass and to get the necessary thrust to pushthe cuttings through the collector channel.

5. The frequency of mowing should be in relation to the rateof growth of the grass. The grass should not be left togrow too much between one cut and the next.

6. During hot and dry periods, the grass should be cut a littlehigher to prevent the ground from drying out.

7. The best height of the grass on a well-kept lawn isapprox. 4-5 cm.With one cut, you do notneed to remove morethan a third of the totalheight.If the grass is very tall, itshould be cut twice in atwenty-four hour period -the first time with theblades at maximumheight, possibly reducingthe cutting width, andthe second cut at the desired height.

8. The appearance of the lawn will improve if you alternatecutting in both directions.

9. If the collector system tends to get blocked with grass,you should reduce the forward speed as it may be toohigh for the condition of the grass. If the problem persists,the probable causes are either badly sharpened blades ordeformed wings.

10. Be very careful when mowing near bushes or kerbs asthese could distort the horizontal position of the cuttingdeck and damage its edge as well as the blades.

5.3.4 Slopes

Complying with the slope li-mits already mentioned,lawns on a slope have tomowed moving up anddown and never acrossthem, taking great carewhen changing directionthat the first wheels do not

hit obstacles (such as stones, branches, roots, etc.), that maycause the machine to slide sideways, roll over or otherwisecause loss of control.

REDUCE SPEED BEFORE ANYCHANGE OF DIRECTION ON SLOPES and always enga-ge the parking brake before leaving the machine stopp-ed and unattended.

Take care when beginning forwardmovement on sloping ground to prevent the risk of tip-ping up.

Never ride the machine on slopesin neutral gear or with the clutch out! Always engagea low gear before leaving the machine stopped andunattended.

Move on slopes with the speed change lever in the «N»position, (to take advantage of the hydrostatic unit's brakingeffect) and then further reduce the speed using the brake, ifnecessary.

Never use reverse for reducingspeed going downhill. Control of the machine couldbe lost, particularly on slippery surfaces.

5.3.5 Emptying the grass-catcher

This operation can only be done with theblade disengaged, otherwise the engine stops.

NOTE

DANGER!

Hydrostatic transmission

DANGER!

Mechanical transmission

WARNING!

DANGER!

When the grass-catcher is full an audible warning is given.STOP FORWARD MOVEMENT, in order not to block the col-lector channel, and disengage the blade which will stop theaudible signal.

Empty the grass-catcher by lifting it using the handle.

At times the audible warning may beheard on engaging the blade even when the grass-catcherhas been emptied. This is due to grass cuttings left on thesensor of the micro-switch. To stop the signal, either removethe remaining grass or disengage the blade and then imme-diately engage it again.

5.3.6 Emptying the collector channel

Cutting very tall or wet grass,particularly at too high a speed,can cause the collector channelto become blocked.

Should this happen, it will benecessary to:– stop forward movement, dis-

engage the blade and stopthe engine;

– take off the grass-catcher orstone-guard;

– remove the accumulated cut-tings going in through the exitof the collector channel.

This must only be done when theengine is stopped.

5.3.7 Summary of the main conditions whereby the safetydevices permit or stop work

The safety devices work in two ways:– by preventing the engine from starting if all the safety

requirements have not been met;– stopping the engine if even just one of the safety require-

ments is lacking.

a) To start the engine it will be necessary that:– the transmission is in “neutral”;– the blade is not engaged;– the operator is seated or the parking brake is engaged.

b) The engine stops when:– the operator leaves his seat when the blades are engaged;– the operator leaves his seat when the transmission is not in

“neutral”;– the operator leaves his seat with the transmission in “neu-

tral” but without engaging the parking brake;– the grass-catcher is lifted or the stone-guard is removed

when the blades are engaged;– the parking brake is engaged without disengaging the blade.

5.3.8 Card protection device

The electronic card has a self-resetting protector which breaksthe circuit if there is a fault in the electrical system. It results inthe stopping of the engine and is signalled by the pilot lampturning off.

The circuit automatically resets after a few seconds but thecause of the fault should be ascertained and dealt with toavoid re-activating the protection device.

To avoid activating the protectiondevice:– do not reverse the cables on the battery terminals;– do not use the machine without its battery or damage may

be caused to the charging regulator;– be careful to not cause short-circuits.

5.3.9 End of mowing

When you have finished mowing, disengage the blade and ridethe machine with the cutting deck in the highest position.

Stop the machine, engage the parking brake and turn off theengine by turning the ignition key to «OFF».When the engine is stopped, close the fuel cock (1) (where fit-ted).

To avoid backfire, put the acceleratorin the «SLOW» position for 20 seconds before stoppingthe engine.

Always take out the igni-tion key if leaving themachine unattended!

Tokeep the battery charged,do not leave the key in the«ON» position when theengine is not running.

5.3.11 Storage and inactivity for long periods

If the machine is likely to be unused for a long period (morethan 1 month), disconnect the cables from the battery and fol-low the instructions in the engine manual.

Carefully remove any dry grass cut-tings which may have collected around the engine or si-lencer to prevent their catching fire the next time themachine is used!

Empty the fuel tank by dis-connecting the tube situatedat the inlet of the fuel filter (1)and follow the instructions inthe engine booklet.

Put the machine away in adry, sheltered place andpreferably covered with acloth ( 9.5).

The battery must be kept in a cool anddry place. Before a long storage period (more than 1 month),always charge the battery, and then recharge before usingagain (chapter 6).

The next time the machine is used, check that there are nofuel leaks from the tubes, fuel cock or carburettor.
