YOUNG ADULTS

Young Adults Thanksgiving DinnerToday | 6:00 – 8:30 pm | Undercroft

We are big fans of giving thanks here at Truro. We are therefore big fans of Thanksgiving Day (and of course Thanksgiving meals)! So the Young Adults community will have a Thanksgiving Dinner on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Come one, come all, if you are an adult and you are young, you are invited!

Here’s how it works: we will provide the Turkeys, and the remainder is potluck, if you are able. If you’re not able to bring a dish, don't let that stop you from coming. If you or any of your friends and co-workers are looking for a good old Thanksgiving meal and looking to make friends around your life stage in Fairfax, then come and give thanks with Truro’s young adults community.

Questions, contact Michael King, mking@truroanglican .com .

PARISH EVENTS

Thanksgiving Blood DriveFri, Nov 28 | 1:00 – 6:00 pm | Undercroft

Truro Anglican is partnering with the American Red Cross for a Thanksgiving blood drive. Please sign up to make your life-saving donation! Not only will your donation help save lives, but you will also get a gift and lots of goodies from the Red Cross as a way of saying thanks.

The very best way to do this is to sign-up for an appointment by going to redcrossblood .org and search by sponsor code TRUROFAIRFAX or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1 .800 .733 .2767) .

TIPS

Host an International for ThanksgivingAre you up to “radical hospitality” for Thanksgiving this year? Do you have room for 2 to 10 at your holiday table this year? Most internationals who come to the US rarely experience any meal in an American home, much less a holiday meal—so help us offer a warm and wonderful dining experience this year to internationals in the community. Start with your near neighbors, co-workers, and, if you still need help connecting, then contact the TIPS office, and we will try to introduce you to a wonderful TIPS family or some folks who would love to share the holiday with you.

WORSHIP

Christmas + Epiphany PageantryInterested in participating in this year’s dramatic processions for Christmas Eve or Epiphany? Shepherds, Holy Families, Canopy Bearers, and Angels are needed for services on Wed, Dec 24 at 3:00, 5:00, 7:30 + 11:00 pm. Shepherds and Holy Family participants for the Live Nativity are also needed from 2:45 to 8:00 pm.

The Epiphany Sunday pageant (Sun, Jan 4, 2015) will need star bearers, canopy bearers, and Holy Families for the 8:30 + 11:15 am services. We are also seeking non-dramatic volunteers to help coordinate the proceedings! This is a fun way for your family to celebrate the Christmas season and serve together!

Contact Kirsten Boyd for more information, kboyd@truroanglican .com .

VESTRY

Vestry Service: A Step of Faithby Ray FlemingWould I stand for Vestry election? I struggled with the answer. After all, I knew that it was a weighty commitment, and what, I asked myself, could I possibly contribute? Yet the words and faith of the boy Samuel kept returning to me: “Speak, for your servant hears.” (1 Samuel 3:10).

Now in my second year of Vestry service, I am so glad that, with my wife’s encouragement and blessing, I said yes. The Lord has shown me my place, surrounded me with wise, God-seeking companions, and developed in me new skills to meet the challenges ahead.

This Vestry season is a time of opening and closing doors, especially where our land search is concerned. There have been many opportunities for prayer, for discernment, and for exercising the faith to follow where God is leading us. The best part is seeing how the Lord is blessing our steps of faith!

Pray for your Vestry. And if you are approached about Vestry service during the upcoming nomination season, give the Lord a chance to work in your life. You won’t regret it.

To make a nomination, contact Gioia Egan, gioia14prayer@verizon .net or Jim Wilkinson, jwilkinson@truroanglican .com .

STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship 2015—Filling Out the Pledge Card! by Bob TateFor many long-time Truro parishioners, filling out the annual pledge card is probably almost second nature by now. But for those who are fairly new to Truro, it is probably less clear, so I hope to address that.

Stewardship Cards are in the pews. The card has an upper and lower section, and is perforated in the middle. The upper section is for you to keep and hold onto as a reminder of your pledge to Truro for 2015. I keep mine in my checking ledger to remind me of my pledge throughout the year. The lower part is where you communicate to us your pledge for the year. We use this data to compile total pledges, and this is a key component in crafting our church budget in support of ministry efforts in 2015. Near the top of the lower part are three options to let us know where you are at presently in your giving journey. Below that is a section that lets us know how much you plan to pledge, and we give you the option of picking a weekly, a monthly, or an annual amount, or some other time frame (bi-annually, quarterly, etc). From time to time, those of you who are mathematically oriented have calculated your annual pledge, then calculated what it worked out to on a monthly and/or weekly basis, and, because putting a name is optional on the card, if there is no name, we have no way to know how often you plan to give. So, to limit confusion, please just pick one.

Also, some of you may be unaware of the fact that you have the option of giving to Truro electronically, and you can set that up for automatic giving on a regular recurring time-frame (weekly, end of the month, etc). You can give from checking and savings accounts, as well as by using debit or credit cards. I have given electronically for over two years now; it is super easy, safe and ensures that the church receives my pledge even if I cannot attend on a given Sunday. The more folks who do this, the more reliable our income stream is, which minimizes disruptions to church operations, especially during the leaner summer months when many folks go away on vacation. So please do consider online giving. But no matter how you give, we are ever so grateful for your faithfulness to our church and its many anointed ministries! Blessings everyone!

Carols by Glowstick(continued)

Because what we found last year is that Carols by Glowstick is such an easy ask! People really will come if you just ask!

Think about neighbors, work colleagues, local organizations, non-profits, retirement homes, coffee houses, you name it!

Or why not get together with your home groups, and organize a pre-Carols gathering of neighbors and friends, and then bring everyone along with you to the event.

Let's get creative in our inviting! Grab some flyers and just ask! And let's make this year's Carols by Glowstick an event to remember!

MARRIAGE

Jim Osterhaus Launches New Book on MarriageJim Osterhaus is launching his new book, Questions Couples Ask Behind Closed Doors: Exploring the Most Common Conflicts in Marriage.

Many couples who seek counseling ask similar questions: Why do we get into so much conflict over the same issues? How can we learn to trust each other? Who leads? What do we do with in-laws? And a whole host of other questions. In Questions Couples Ask Behind Closed Doors, Jim explores the top 18 questions he's been asked during his career as a clinical psychologist and answers them. Each chapter addresses a specific challenge couples face and gives practical, clinical advice to help couples understand their relationship better.

The book is available in paperback or on Kindle at Amazon .com .

Stewardship (continued)

Through Alpha, many have come to know to the Lord and have received the Holy Spirit for the first time; others have reconnected to His Grace and Mercy. Many lives have been transformed.

Stewardship implies the care of people as well as the care of resources, time and talents. Through your generous giving, the Alpha ministry has been able to flourish and reach widely into the community, caring for many. Along with Alpha at Truro, we also offer Alpha for seniors, Alpha for teens, Alpha in Korean and Alpha in Spanish. Alpha is an element of Truro’s prison ministry at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, and, most recently, Truro is offering Alpha at The Lamb Center and on Capitol Hill.

The word "ministry" in Greek and Hebrew is the same word as servant. The Alpha ministry at Truro could not happen without the many servants on the Alpha team who generously give of their time, talents and love. This demonstration of stewardship is indeed a blessed example of the integration of faith and life that occurs here at Truro.

As a member of the Alpha team and of the Vestry, I thank you for your joyful generosity which allows Truro to do the work the Lord has given us to do.

Have you thought about who you can invite to Alpha? The next Alpha Party will be on Fri, Jan 23, 2015.
