BrotherS reSpond to a challenGeResponding to the invitation of Bishop Neil Tiedemann, CP, Bishop of the Mandeville Diocese of Jamaica, West Indies, our Province will provide leadership for St. Vincent Strambi School. The School is located on the south central side of the Island in the town of Bull Savannah.
Brother Augustine Nicoletti, currently in his ninth year at Manhattan College and presently the Chair of the Education Department, will assume the role of Principal at St. Vincent. Brother James Wallace, a
veteran missionary, is currently in his tenth year of service at Manhattan College, and has been the Vice President for Mission for the past three years. In addition to these Brothers, two Lasallians are in the process of being identified to complete the Community and to serve in the school as teachers and moderators of extracurricular programs.
This venture is illustrative of the close cooperation between the Brothers and the Passionists over the years in matters of ministries and retreats.
Brother James Wallace Brother Augustine Nicoletti
Brother Alvaro Echeverria, Superior General, has given Brother Dennis Malloy a second four year mandate to serve as Provincial of our “young” Province, the District of Eastern
North America. He congratulated Brother Dennis for his diligent work in successfully bringing three legacy provinces into a new one, with common administrative guidelines, processes and practices.
Brother Thomas Scanlan, currently an Auxiliary Provincial, also received a mandate for four additional years as Auxiliary, continuing his role of working
with Boards of Trustees, particularly with those ministries which are canonically sponsored by the Province.
Two newly appointed Auxiliary Provincials will complete the administrative team: Brother Edward Phelan, noted for his visionary work with the under-privileged and neglected, will
be responsible for the pastoral care of the Brothers and Brothers Communities, and for the care of our senior Brothers. Brother Charles Kitson, having had roles in education,
social work, campus ministry, and Institute Leadership, will provide animation and leadership to the Brothers’ Vocation Program, and ensure that our ministries continue to expand their vision of the Lasallian Mission.
Brother Dennis thanked these Brothers for their willingness to serve and asked for God’s blessings on them and their work. He also expressed his gratitude to the two outgoing founding Auxiliaries, Brother Dennis Lee and Brother Jerome Sullivan.

Brother Peter Bray, Vice-Chancellor of the University, has announced a series of celebratory events for the coming academic year as the University begins its 40th year this August 26th. He expressed gratitude to the faculty and benefactors for their work and generosity in bringing Bethlehem University’s alumni to over 14,000, as it continues to introduce new programs to serve more students each year.

for lunch recently. Events like this are a real encouragement to the resident Brothers, and we are most grateful for these displays of loyalty and gratitude to our Brothers.
The setting for the luncheon was the dining room of a local country club. Brother George entered the crowded lobby of the club, and … knew one of the men gathered
there! And then he recognized another! In all, six additional former Prep students joined the festive luncheon celebration.
Don’t tell Brother George, but the party organizers plan an even grander luncheon next year, as they look forward to Brother George’s 70th anniversary!

Timothy Hulbert
Businessman Timothy Hulbert, President and CEO of the Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce since 2001, received the “Golden Apple” Award
from the Charlottesville Daily Progress newspaper. This Award annually “recognizes excellence in teaching”. The Chamber has a membership of over 1,200 enterprises which employ more than 45,000 men and women.
Hulbert’s tenure has been marked by his and the Chamber’s forceful insistence that the region be noted for high quality education for all students. Hulbert knows the importance of a solid, quality education. He thanks his parents and the Sisters of Mercy for his initial schooling. In 1970, he graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, NY, where two recently deceased Christian Brothers inspired him and strongly impacted his life. Brother Aloysius Myers conveyed the notion that his students could be anything they wanted to be in life. And Brother Gabriel Healy taught Theology and convinced Hulbert and several of his classmates to attend Manhattan College, the
oldest of the Christian Brothers universities.
“I was blessed with great teachers and a great education! Teachers impart information and knowledge. Great teachers mold character. I was fortunate to spend my whole life around a father who was like that and is still like that, and a mother like that. My parents and teachers expected me to excel, so it never occurred to me to do anything but my very best.”
Timothy Hulbert – “Brothers’ Boy”, Businessman, and Golden Apple recipient for fostering excellence in education! Congratulations!

During its 20th Anniversary year, Providence’s San Miguel School (Spring 2013 Lasallian Notes) was blessed with receiving the largest gift in its history. The school’s founder and principal, Brother Lawrence Goyette, announced that recently deceased Ms Barbara Jalbert generously left a bequest to the San Miguel School
in the amount of $500,000. Ms Jalbert was a life-time teacher, having lived a modest lifestyle for over 90 years.
According to Ms Jalbert’s friend, Ron Ware: “Barbara’s passion — evident in her high school profile and refined over the years of teaching — was very specific. She cared deeply about children who live in poverty and struggle to find acceptance, opportunity and success. She believed in the power of deep faith and quality education to change the trajectory of a child’s life. She was particularly concerned that young boys in the formative middle school years would find the guidance and role models they need to flourish in the high school years and beyond. Happily — and providentially — I was able to introduce Barbara to the San Miguel School… which was a perfect match for Barbara.”
Brother Lawrence has set up a scholarship program in her memory, which will aid the students about whom she was most concerned. May God bless you, Ms Jalbert, for your foresight and generosity!
In order to keep on the leading edge of technology, one year ago St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Buffalo, NY, announced plans to give incoming freshmen i-Pads. This initiative would have taken four years to implement school wide.
Robert T. Scott, AFSC, President of St. Joe’s, has announced that an anonymous St. Joe’s alumnus has donated $150,000 to supply all students with free i-Pads, which they will receive in the fall. “Innovation is at the core of our mission as a Lasallian school. Incorporating technology helps us reach more students and prepare them for success in an increasingly tech-focused, global economy. The generous gift shows that alumni appreciate this mission, and want to help us take it into the future,” said Mr. Scott.
Brother auGuStine loeS, fSc1913–201382 Years as a Brother of the Christian Schools
Until his recent death just four months short of his 100th birthday, Brother Augustine Loes was one of the Brothers with the greatest number of years of religious profession in the American Provinces.
Journeying to Barrytown, NY, he entered the Junior Novitiate in June of 1928, and the Senior Novitiate in June of 1930, and received the Brothers’ robe in September 1930. After a few years of teaching at Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, NY, and De La Salle Institute, New York City, he was assigned as a teacher in the Junior Novitiate, a special high school program designed to strengthen the calling of young men who desired to become Brothers. He remained in Barrytown for ten years as a teacher, eventually becoming the Director of the program.

“Sizzling” —- that is the word Brother Joseph Miggins often used when replying to a nephew’s question as to “How’s it going?” It is a word that totally captures the life of Brother Joseph! It describes
the manner in which he prepared and delivered his lessons in 1947 at St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket, RI, as a 23 year old Brother. He directed the Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, NJ, Service Program involving almost 1000 students for seventeen years, even as an 88 year old senior Brother in 2013! Brother cyril o’neill, fSc1929–201367 Years as a Brother of the Christian Schools
Brother Cyril O’Neill was born in the Bronx, NY, of Irish immigrant parents only months before the Great Depression. After his father died in an industrial accident in 1932, his mother took the
family to England, where relatives could be of assistance. Soon the parish of St. Cuthbert in Manchester became the center of family life, with the youngsters attending the parish school, and serving as altar boys in the Church.
According to Brother Cyril’s autobiography, the parish priest, noting his organization skills and attention to detail, gave him the task of instructing new members of the altar society. He found this first experience in teaching quite satisfying, and ultimately it lead him to
join the Brothers’ Province of England Junior Novitiate as a high school sophomore. He entered the Novitiate in June 1945, and received the Brothers’ Robe in September 1945.
Brother Cyril was first assigned to teach at De La Salle School in Sheffield, England. After 13 years, he became the principal of De La Salle School in Liverpool, England, and remained there for 5 years. Another 13 year high school assignment led him to St. Aloysius School in London. He then became the principal of St. Illtyd’s School in Cardiff, Wales, for a 4 year term.
During these years, many members of Brother Cyril’s family immigrated to the United States. He petitioned to be assigned to the US, and was granted his request in 1986. He taught for two years at La Salle Institute in Troy, NY, and became a member of the legacy New York Province in 1987. In 1988, he transferred to Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ, where he remained until this past year, when illness caused him to enter De La Salle Hall, on the CBA campus.
Brother Cyril wrote extensively of the conditions and his experience in England during World War II. His daily prayer asked God to continue to protect the United States from such adversity. May God protect and safeguard Brother Cyril in Heaven!
Brother peter Mannion, fSc1926–201368 Years as a Brother of the Christian Schools
Brother Peter Mannion was one among several Brothers’ vocations from St. Cecilia’s Parish in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn during the late 1940’s and ‘50’s. He was known as a lad of strength in his personal life, combining
his many talents with a wonderful religious sense as well as kindness. His interest in people led him to always ask those he met how they were, and what they were doing. His gift of Irish laughter, good humor, and robust singing voice made him a welcome guest at any gathering.
Brother Peter’s assignments ran the gamut: numerous teaching years interspersed with
administration, directorship, and work in vocation recruitment. At various times, he directed the Junior Novitiate, Senior Novitiate, and Scholasticate. In each of these assignments, his leadership qualities, common sense, kindness, prudence and patience led to success. When there was a special need, Brother Peter was near the top of the list of Brothers the Brother Provincial could call upon to accept a challenging assignment. He was devoted to his Brothers and the works of the Province. He spent the final 44 years of his life in Lincroft, NJ, initially for three years at La Salle Provincialate as Director of Vocations, then serving seven years as Principal of Christian Brothers Academy, 14 years in the CBA Guidance Department, 15 years in CBA’s Development Office, and five years in retirement. While at Lincroft, he was very involved with the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick!
The Apostle Peter was the rock upon which Jesus built His Church. Brother Peter was the rock of stability and diligence in service to the Brothers, students, and the legacy New York Province throughout his career! May God bless and amply reward him!

students and staff identified him as a Brother with significant leadership skills. Brother Augustine spent a year in special study and research on the life of our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. The next two decades found him in various administrative posts involving the training of young Brothers, and at Lincoln Hall, the child care agency in Lincolndale, NY.
In 1966, Brother Augustine began a six year term as Provincial. In line with his desire to improve the lot of the disadvantaged, he then became the Executive Director of La Salle School in Albany, NY, a multi-faceted human service agency founded by the Brothers in 1854. After nine years, he was then assigned as Director of the retired and infirmed Brothers at De La Salle Hall in Lincroft for a six year term. Retirement then beckoned, and Brother Augustine took full advantage of it to continue his research on the life and spirituality of De La Salle. His publication and lecture ministry has provided the Brothers with an outstanding library of updated Lasallian literature.
Brother Augustine’s peaceful, polite, and friendly demeanor bespoke his religious moorings. He led the Brothers on a renewed examination of La Salle’s vision. He will be remembered for rekindling the Brothers interest in all things Lasallian!
fundraiser for Catholic Schools in the Diocese.
In addition to his school duties during the 1960’s, he was charged with participating in various vocation programs involving interested candidates for the Brothers, and the formation of young Brothers. He was the Vocation Recruiter for the Province from 1970 to 1979.
In the 1960’s, as school administration became more complex, the position of Director of the Brothers’ Community was separated from that of the Principal. No matter what his assignment, from that time on, it also included that of being the Brothers’ Community Director. In this position, Brother Joseph’s selflessness stood out. He literally would do anything for any Brother that was humanly possible, without limit. In more recent years, the celebration of a Brother’s birthday was not complete without Brother Joseph reciting an original rhyming ditty highlighting the Brothers contributions to the school and community.
Brother Joseph’s sparkling eyes above his genuine smile made an instant friend of every acquaintance. We pray that Jesus enthusiastically welcomes him to his sizzling reward in Heaven!
