MISA EN ESPAÑOL

Last August, over a series of bulletin posts, I introduced the Pastoral Plan for Our Lady of the Lake, the first goal of which is to charter and implement a stewardship commission:

The first pillar of our Diocesan plan for the renewal of a parish is that of Stewardship. The change in culture necessary for the flour-ishing of stewardship requires a specific team of people whose role is to understand the theology and spirituality of stewardship, educate the parish on stewardship’s virtues, provide resources to parish leadership regarding stewardship formation, and to perform the critical role of engagement and assessment necessary for success. A chartered commission will have the resources and authority to change our culture of stewardship to be more in line with best practices, especially as exemplified by the parishes in the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas.

Bishop McKnight has made stewardship one of the main pillars of parish planning and renewal. He has tasked Father Stephen Jones to lead the parishes of the Diocese into transforming into total stewardship parishes. Already the first group of seven parishes have made the

Bulletin announcements should be into the office by Thursday at noon for publication in that weekend’s bulletin.

Dear Friends in Christ!I have been reading the Acts of the Apostles during this past week, and I am always struck by the the report of Judas

in Acts 1:16-18 where they are talking about Judas’ purchase of the Bloody Acre; Judas threw himself ‘headlong and burst open,’ onto this property, perhaps a cave of sorts or a cliff, and ended his own life because he would cause the death of Jesus. The Holy Spirit had spoken through David and foretold this person and this particular betrayal nearly 1000 years before Jesus was even born! The prophecy was specific and even talked about a man who was an apostle of Jesus, and worked in ministry with Him. I pray that you are spending time in the bible and noting the contrast and prophecies of the Old Testament with the New Testament. Maybe it takes this long for the Old Testament to sink in to this unworthy bunch of modern Christians, but if God’s Word can traverse a good chunk of history, from ancient times until today, surely we can see the longevity, the solidity and the majesty of our King and His Word. This is proof that God ‘knew’ His Son long before he was born! All of us are part of that insanely miraculous plan!

If you do not realize the connections between the OT and NT, undertake the program that Fr. Mike Schmitz has now on YouTube to ‘cover the entire bible in a year.’ It can also be found on Formed.org. We have a manual for Life; the Bible. Challenge yourself to read it every day, even just a few verses. Practice lectio divina (Google that!) or just open the bible and point your finger at a verse. Ask yourself why God might have had you read this passage, and what it means to something in your life, and how you could apply the message. God has given us all we need. Take advantage of it and get closer to Him.

God Bless and Prayers For All!Vicki

PRAYERS FOR RECOVERY

Celebration of Candlemas...the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord will take place Tuesday, February 2 at 8:00 AM Mass. Many Christians consider Jesus as the “light of the world” so it is fitting that candles are blessed on this day. If you have special candles that you would like to have blessed, bring them to mass that morning.

The Feast of the Presentation, often called Candlemas, commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the presentation of Christ in the temple, which occurred 40 days after his birth as prescribed by Jewish law. According to the Mosaic law, a mother who had given birth to a boy was considered unclean for seven days. Also, she was to remain 33 days "in the blood of her purification."

Luke tells us, quoting Exodus 13:2,12, that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem because every firstborn child was to be dedicated to the Lord. They also went to sacrifice a pair of doves or two young pigeons, showing that Mary and Joseph were poor. Once in the temple, Jesus was purified by the prayer of Simeon, in the presence of Anna the prophetess. Simeon, upon seeing the Messiah, gave thanks to the Lord, singing a hymn now called the Nunc Dimittis:

Lord, now you let your servant go in peace,

your word has been fulfilled:My own eyes have seen the

salvation, which you have prepared in the

sight of every people:a light to reveal you to the nationsand the glory of your people Israel.Simeon told Mary, "Behold, this

child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against, (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed." Simeon thus foreshadowed the crucifixion and the sorrows of Mary at seeing the death of her Son.

May they place their trust and confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ:

DEACON’S CORNERAs I was looking forward at the

Liturgical Calendar, I noticed that the Presentation of the Lord is on 2 February 2021. I thought this was out of place since I remember reading a Gospel where Jesus was already presented at the Temple. I researched the past Sunday’s and found it on 27 December 2020. So, I was curious and found out some interesting things regarding the Presentation of the Lord on 2 February 2021.

The Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation of the Lord that occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus. It is also known as the Purifi-cation of Our Lady since this Jewish ritual of purification for Jewish women comes forty days after giving birth. In Mary’s case, this purification was not necessary, but it indicates her renewal in offering herself to God with accom-plishing His Divine Plan.

With obedience to the Mosaic Law, Jesus, the first-born of his Blessed Mother Mary and foster Father Joseph, would be presented in the Temple. This is another ‘epiphany’ celebration with Jesus being revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess. And so, with presenting Jesus, God, as man, enters His temple presenting Himself to those who are searching for Him.

On this day, the Church also demonstrates its gratitude to all those in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church who have not only dedicated themselves to prayer but to those who have dedicated themselves to a religious vocation. Through the figures of Simeon and Anna, Jesus’ presentation in the temple reminds us that prayer and acts of charity open

our minds and hearts to the Holy Spirit. Through prayer, we learn to recognize Jesus, just as Simeon and Anna did, with manifesting Himself in others and providing us an inner vision of charity, support, and love to others.

All Christian mothers can identify with the maternity of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. They, too, are mothers in God’s Divine Plan with giving birth and presenting their child/children to God Our Father through Baptism.

And just as our Blessed Mother and Foster Father Joseph presented the Christ Child at the Temple, we also present our children to God through Baptism where we are all reborn as His adopted children through Jesus. God predestined us to this adoption as his sons and daughters. We therefore are sharers in Christ with our first “profession of faith” through Baptism being given “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. Finally, God grant many Blessings upon all expectant mothers, parents, and to all married couples!

Blessings – Dcn Jim

What do you want to know about the Catholic Faith?

Is there a question about the Mass that has been nagging you?

Have you ever wondered what is the reasoning behind our traditions?

Deacon Paul Poulter is writing blogs on the website to answer just these types of questions. He asks that you call him with your questions at:

CATHOLIC QUESTIONS

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, we entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.

At the foot of the Cross, you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.

Patroness of the Diocese of Jefferson City, you know what we need.

We are certain of the power of your intercession, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will

and to do what Jesus tells us.He who taught us to “love one

another, as I have loved you” took our sufferings upon Himself and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.

Bring under your mantle of protection all who provide care for the sick and minister to their needs, as your Son implores us to do for one another.

V. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God.

R. Do not despise our pleas and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Folks who are inter-ested in this important initiative can read through the charter and get a better sense of the different kinds of service that the commission will entail. I will be contacting individuals who have expressed interest in being part of the commission but am also offering an invitation to come and see what the commis-sion’s work would entail at a meeting on Thursday, February 25th in the Fellowship Hall at 4:00 PM. The parables which Christ speak to us through the Gospels reveal the mystery of the Kingdom of God. The key characters in the parables are people who have been entrusted something great and are asked use this grace as a means of building the Kingdom. The farmers, the shepherds, the fishermen, the merchants, and the household stewards are called to live a life that manifests the superabundant mercy of God through their labor and industry. The Lord’s Prayer is a prayer of stewardship when we pray “thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” In praying the Our Father, we are proclaiming our willingness to cooperate with God’s grace so that

the Kingdom is visible here and now, inviting us to walk the path of the Kingdom to the everlasting light of heaven.

I look forward to the coming months as we all engage in this sacred conversation, discerning God blessings, recognizing the promptings of the Spirit, and following the invitation of the Lord Jesus to join Him in building the Kingdom.

A Personal Commitment to Stewardship

My parish is composed of people like me.

I help make it what it is.It will be friendly, if I am.It will be holy, if I am.Its pews will be filled, if I help fill

them.It will do great work, if I work.It will be prayerful, if I pray.It will make generous gifts to

many causes,if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into its

worship,if I invite and bring them.It will be a parish of loyalty and

love,of fearlessness and faith, of

compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who make it what

it is,am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God,I now dedicate myself to the task

of beingall the things that I want my

parish to be.Amen.
