A Connected Community In Greater University Circle

www.neighborhoodgrants.org www.neighborhood-voice.com

Buckeye–Shaker • Central • Fairfax • Glenville • Hough Little Italy • University Circle • East Cleveland

• We are all interdependent; our individual well-being is connected to that of our neighbors

• Small projects and acts can have major impact when connected by trusting relationships

• We all have value and gifts to contribute• Everyday people are at the heart of

genuine democracy

Our Core Beliefs

Our Work• We facilitate trust building• We embrace tension to spark

new learning and innovation

• We experiment with new strategies and reflect on what happens

• We actively name and confront the challenges associated with social oppression and privilege

Neighborhood Connections was established in 2003 by the Cleveland Foundation to empower people in Cleveland’s neighborhoods and to encourage them to become more civically engaged. We provide small grants that fund citizen-driven neighborhood projects, events and activities that benefit Clevelanders and East Clevelanders. As of June 2011, we awarded 1600 grants totaling $4.5 million.

These grants and the projects they fund are not the ending point -- instead, they are a beginning to community engagement.

About Neighborhood Connections

Our Goals

Neighborhood Connections is expanding its focus beyond grant-making to catalyze a Community of Practice. A community of practice is an environment where people living, working, playing and worshiping in neighborhoods are well connected, well informed and actively engaged in building their community through thoughtful practice.

We are specifically working with community stakeholders in Buckeye-Shaker, Central, Fairfax, Glenville, Hough, Little Italy, University Circle and East Cleveland (Greater University Circle) to concentrate our efforts toward a more vibrant and robust urban core. We believe that a co-investment approach – one involving members of the public, private and civic sectors, will result in sustained change to revitalize one of our region’s high growth areas, leveraging the innovative wealth building initiative that is currently underway in Greater University Circle.

A Community of PracticeWe are inviting everyone from Greater University Circle (GUC) – residents, congregants, employers and institutional representatives to participate in an innovative process of building trust and power to lead themselves and their communities to renewed strength, health and connectedness. By learning and interacting with various networks across Greater University Circle, we hope to strengthen and support people as they learn to cultivate environments where everyone can more easily connect to information, opportunities and one another.

Our Invitation

Opportunities for InvolvementNeighbor CirclesHost a Neighbor Circle and help strengthen and build relationships on your street. Neighbor Circles consist of three gatherings over a meal and guided conversation by a resident facilitator.

Innovation TeamApply to participate on an Innovation Team which consists of diverse teams of people that either live, work or worship in Greater University Circle, working collectively to develop and experiment with innovative practices to build community across known boundaries.

Neighborhood Tours Join us for citizen-driven tours of the Greater University Circle neighborhoods.

Network Nights Learn about what’s happening in Greater University Circle and opportunities to get involved at these citizen-driven gatherings.

Neighborhood Connections Grants Apply for a Neighborhood Connections grant of up to $5,000 to join with others in your community to work together on something you care about.
