The other day, on a warm andsunny Sunday afternoon, wereceived our first taste of Spring. It was also the beginning ofnoticeably longer days with theonset of daylight-saving time. Yousaw buds on the trees andblossoming flowers. You heardchirping birds and the swish ofgolf clubs. The sights and soundsof Spring were all around us.
As this new season begins, weknow that Pesach, which is calledChag Ha’aviv, the holiday ofSpring is upon us. Passover isalso the season of our liberation,Z’man Cherutenu andcommemorates the redemptionfrom the enslavement of Egypt.

In January, I wrote about Tu B’Shevat and the waysthat it links us with the Land of Israel at a time ofyear when we are far more preoccupied with winter.I also discussed the Seven Species of the Land, set out in the Torah as the most representativeproduce of Biblical Israel and the origin of thefamous phrase, “a land flowing with milk andhoney.” I was in Israel with my family for ten daysin February and as always, we made it a point tosee things that we had not previously seen. Forexample, we went into the desert north of Eilat andlearned about the ecology and history of the area. When we recently came to the Torah reading aboutconstructing the Mishkan/Tabernacle, my sonremembered that we had seen acacia trees, thewood used to make the altar. He made an instantconnection and had a vivid image to use as areference.
I mention this example since we all have anopportunity to help make it possible for moreteens and young people to travel to Israel and seeit firsthand. Through participation in an organizedprogram (and there are many worthy ones), theywill experience the richness of Israel in all itsaspects. They will experience its history and itsnatural wonders, its blend of cultures and itsmodern political and economics successes, itsrural tranquility and beauty and its pulsing urbanrhythms. Any number of studies have shown thateven a short time spent in Israel positivelyinfluences Jewish identity. The late teens throughtwenties are the most formative years of aperson’s Jewish identity and so the mostappropriate time for a first visit to Israel.
Unfortunately, one of the main reasons that youngpeople do not visit Israel at this time in their lives isthe cost. The reality is that travel to and in Israel, providing the kind of guided, supervisedexperiences that any parent would want costsmoney. The Jewish community is aware of thisreality and doing something about it. The JewishFederation of Middlesex participates in thePassport for Israel program. Although a nationalinitiative, here it is a matching program allying theUJA-Federation and individual congregations.Subventions are available to help make an Israelexperience affordable. Bnai Tikvah recently agreed
to increase its contribution to match an increase inUJA-Federation’s grant. Now, we must raise theincreased endowment that will make ourcontribution possible. When you receive a letterasking for your help, please respond positively. The individuals spearheading this effort feel sostrongly about this that they personally coveredthe cost of the mailing. Let us now do our share.
We speak about Israel in our religious schools, from the bimah and in other forums. Our teenscan learn a lot this way. However, as anyone whohas visited Israel even once will attest to, a visit isworth a thousand words.
My family joins me in wishing you a very JoyousPesach!

In Judaism there is always time to get it right.Ours is a religion of kindness, personalconnections and of spiritual fulfillment. One of ourfavorite activities is making resolutions, new year’sresolutions in particular. You are wondering whyI’m writing about this now? Well, the Jewishmonth of Nisan, the month in which we celebratePassover is the first month of the year "Adonaisaid to Moses and Aaron in the Land of Egypt,'This month shall be for you the beginning of themonths; it shall be for you the first of the monthsof the year.' " (Shemot, 12:1-2)
The first commandment given by God to theJewish People was to establish the beginning ofthe Month of Nisan (which wasn't yet called"Nisan," but, rather, the First Month). Wecelebrate Rosh Hashanah in Tishrei (September orOctober), the Jewish New Year, when we ask tobe judged kindly by God. Tu B’Shvat, theagricultural New Year, a great time to give thanksand resolve to take better care of theenvironment. Even Hanukkah is a sort of “NewYear”, a time to resolve spiritual rededication.
To me, as we clean and prepare for Pesach, wehave a very critical new beginning. We celebratebeing a new people. We were slaves, now we arefree. Free to do what ever we want, free to makegood choices. So many opportunities, but do wetake advantage of these many chances? We arefree to resolve to be the best people, to do somuch to improve our world.
When you clean your home and put away thechametz until after Pesach, why not give an extralarge donation to a food bank, or bring some cansto my office, so I can bring them to a food bankfor you. You can even give to the food to theneedy by designating a portion of your “scrip”purchase for a food bank.
It seems to me that we are blessed in so manyways but that we do not make a large enoughcontribution of time and energy to needy causes. Ireally don’t know about you, but I know I can dobetter.
The great Chasidic rabbi, the Baal Shem Tov, ,stood outside the local one room shul on the eveof Yom Kippor. He saw God’s Angels flying above
Page 4 HAKOL www.bnaitikvah.org April 2007 Nisan - Iyar 5767 Volume 28, Issue 8
OUR HAZZAN’S VOICE Cantor Bruce Rockman
the little shul, with their hands covering theirears. Suddenly the great rabbi heard what thepeople inside were saying “Please help memake more money…tell people to like mebetter…”, all their prayers were for their personalglorification. When the people invited him insidethe packed shul, he walked away and prayed toGod for forgiveness in the nearby forest .
None of us can be arrogant enough to think thatwe do enough for our fellow man. We can all dobetter, let’s give it a try. Everything is new, itsPesach we are like newly freed slaves in a worldwith too many opportunities, to do good or not.So, go, start again, begin a new.
My vows to the Lord will I pay in the presence ofall His people, in the courts of the House of theLord, In the midst of Jerusalem. Halleluyah!(Psalm 16:19)Stacey, Bashe Rafi and I wish you a very sweetPesach.

Good Guys, Bad Guys,Saints, and Sinners
A friend of mine, George Risha, a LebaneseChristian, read an article in the Jerusalem ReportMagazine, that I had showed him, and he told methat he was amazed that the writers were evenmore critical of the Israeli leadership than he was, about their conduct of the recent Lebanese war.
My friend has been working for the U.S.government as an Arabic translator in Iraq thesepast 3 or 4 years with the United States military. He was surprised that the Israelis had not moppedup the Hezbola terrorists in short time. But evenmore enlightening was his delight in seeing thatIsraeli journalists could take the government totask, and that reports could severely criticize theirconduct of the war with no concern about beingarrested or “disappeared” or found in a ditch witha hole in their head.
“That’s real democracy” he said with a smile. Ireacted to his smile with one of my own. Yes,Israel is a democracy with all of the warts andblemishes and human frailties that contribute to ordetract from government of and by the people.Although our form of government in Americadiffers from Israel’s in that we have a presidentialrather than a parliamentary system, in both cases, the governments are elected by and areaccountable to the people.
We have only to read the newspaper and othermedia to find that no form of government is proofagainst infiltration of frauds, biases, thieves, exploiters and sex abusers. Our own belovedcountry has had (and continues to have) its shareof political scandals during our entire history oftwo hundred plus years. Some have gone to jail, and some have been sued, but no one getskidnapped or “disappeared” for political opinionsin America, except by individual extremists.
And so it is in Israel. As we have all heard it said, for every million Jewish citizens, you have amillion presidents. And so, with G-ds’ help andour prayers, may it long continue.
Aaron Rosloff

We have Junior Congregation Family servicesevery Saturday morning from 10:30 - 12:15 in theBeit Midrash. Why not join us? The best exampleyou can give your kids is to either enjoy ourservice or attend the service in the mainsanctuary instead of dropping them off andleaving.
Many parents feel lost in the main service and sojoin us when their child attends. We go slow andexplain many of the traditions that go along withthe prayers. You don't even have to sit next toyour child.
Anyone who would like to sponsor a JuniorCongregation Family Service kiddush may do soby contacting me at [email protected] anddonating $18.

SIDDUR-OLOGY (formerly known as Learner’s Minyan)
UPCOMING SESSIONS:Shabbat: April 21st and 28th, 9:40 A.M.The Siddur is probably the most widely used Jewishtext. In our Siddur-ology sessions, we explore themeaning of the Tefilot (prayers), and their origins, aswell as some of the reasons behind the structure ofthe Shabbat prayer service as we practice it today. It is not a "learners minyan"; a service is notconducted, but it is hopefully a way for everyone togain greater insight into and appreciation for theservice. Sessions begin at 9:40, last 30 minutes andtake place in the Beit Midrash, after which we rejointhe main service.
All are welcome! You needn’t be a Hebrew reader, nor do you have to have come to one session toattend another. Binders with the materials coveredin all sessions are distributed for in class use .
Please feel free to contact me [email protected]
with any questions.
I look forward to seeing you,

from oppressive servitude with springtime. Springnaturally brings on the renewal of nature and thebursting forth of new life. Both Spring and Passoverare passwords for rebirth and hope. At the PassoverSeder, we dip the parsley greens, a symbol ofSpring, into the saltwater, which is a symbol of thetears of enslavement. The prayer that we sayblesses God as “the Creator of the fruit.” As we dothis, we reaffirm the bond between the natural worldand the human spirit.
May all of us be blessed every day with new hopeand renewal.
From my family to everyone in our B’nai Tikvahfamily~~
Best wishes for a Happy Spring and a “Zeesen andFreilech” Passover!!

MEN’S CLUBManot program!Women's League for Conservative Judaism has asa primary goal to perpetuate Jewish Traditions andObservances. As an affiliate of Women's League,we know that women are often seen as the"keepers of the flames of mitzvot, family, study,Israel, Torah, and community. The W in theWomen's League Logo suggests the ancientmenorah, and the phrase Mah yafah y'rushataynu(How beautiful is our heritage) reflects our ongoingcommitment to our vital and dynamic traditions."Our own B'nai Tikvah Sisterhood supports thisgoal through a variety of ways including theannual Mishloach Manot program. This serviceto the congregation and major fundraiser wasagain very successful because of your support.Forty-two people/families signed on as "GoldenGroggers" and 318 orders were placed includingadult baskets, baskets for children and individualcards for those who live out of the area.

Supermarket Scrip CommitteeREADY TO SPRING FORWARD?
Spring to the "Lighter Lifestyle" Wesurvived another New Jersey winter.Speaking only for myself, this pastwinter was, thankfully, not a horribleone. I am not a fan of heavy winterapparel, slip sliding on ice, scrapingwindshields and other seasonalactivities. If you love snow, skiing, skating and snowmen, then I am sorryyou didn't have that cold, wet, whitestuff. Now that April is here, so isspring. For me April representsmany things. It means it is time tobring out the warm weather clothingand pack away the winter wardrobe.Lawn mowers and gardening tools willbe needed as the grass and flowersawaken from their winter hibernation. The colorsof the tulips and daffodils contrast beautifully withthe new green grass. Windows open up to bring inthe fresh air. Our cat, Rufio, enjoys the openwindows. He perches himself on the window sill sohe can catch the view of the outdoor activities.Occasionally he will hiss at a dog as it is beingwalked past our house; Max Koffler included. Thisall reminds me that lighter clothing and warmerweather signifies a "lighter lifestyle." What do Imean by "lighter lifestyle?" Examples arebarbecues, using paper and plastic for dining, picnics in the park/beach/backyard. Anything thattakes us out of the kitchen is the "lighter lifestyle.":Many of the items that are needed to achieve this"lighter lifestyle" may be purchased at A&P, Acme,Pathmark, Shop Rite and Stop & Shop. When yougrab your shopping lists and coupons, remember tobring along supermarket scrip to pay for thoseitems. Why give these stores your cash, check orcredit cards when could just as easily giveCongregation B'nai Tikvah your cash, check orcredit card? Supermarket scrip has been a verysuccessful fundraiser for Congregation B'nai Tikvah. These participating stores allow our synagogue toretain approximately 5% of the scrip sales. At theend of each fiscal year the figure is really impressive. As a quick reminder, you may purchase supermarketscrip by:
• visiting the scrip table in the lobby of the school wing during Sunday religious school hours.
• ordering on-line at bnaitikvah.org.• coming to the synagogue office during
business hours.• ordering over the telephone.
placing an order with one of the following scripcommittee members.
Rachel Shaneson - (732) 329-2189 (South Brunswick, Princeton, other unmentioned areas) or Bobby Bergman - (732) 246-7285 (Monroe) orAnn Rosenzweig - (732) 249-9141 (East and North Brunswick)
Remember: if getting to the synagogue when scripis available, don't despair. You can still order yourscrip and it will be delivered FREE of charge to yourdoor by one of the scrip committee's very friendlymembers. The scrip committee has made theseaccommodations to assist you with your scrippurchases. Therefore, when you are planning your"lighter lifestyle" this spring, think supermarket scrip.
"Program Note" (for those of you who haven'theard and as a reminder to those that have) - A&Phas recently announced intentions to acquirePathmark. The specifics of this deal have not beenannounced. When they are the supermarket scripcommittee will be able to implement any changesthat result in this new blending of two majorsupermarket chains. We will also be able to tell youif the scrip from these two stores will beinterchangeable, whether Pathmark's name andbrands will be absorbed by A&P, any local storeclosings, etc. Until such time the scrip from thesetwo chains remain separate as well as available.
Until the May edition, I hope you spring into Apriland that you stop to smell the flowers along the way.Enjoy the "lighter lifestyle."Linda FeinsteinThe following is a handy list of scrip facts for yourperusal: Scrip:
