Steve Dimopoulos Community News Steve Dimopoulos MP State Member for Oakleigh Level Crossings ON TRACK FOR 2018 REMOVAL Work is well underway to get rid of the nine level crossings between Caulfield and Dandenong, including at Grange, Koornang, Murrumbeena, Poath, Clayton and Centre Roads. The really good news is that the brand new construction outcome means far less disruption than an alternative method of removing the crossings. There will be far fewer trucks, minimal road closures, there won’t be a need to move a major gas pipeline and the train line won’t be subject to flooding. By 2018, our local level crossings are due to be gone forever. NEW COMMUNITY SPACES Thousands of square metres of brand new space will be created in our community. The Government has appointed the head of the Royal Botanic Gardens to lead the team to oversee the development of the new space created by elevating the rail lines. This means new bike and walking paths, playgrounds and even places for weekend markets. e New MONASH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL The new and much needed Monash Children’s Hospital looks amazing. The Andrews Government provided an extra $14 million for early in life mental health services in addition to $3.5 million for a dedicated helipad for the hospital. And to make sure kids can continue to learn while they are in hospital, the government is building a $6.8 million brand new school on site at Monash. This hospital will be one of the largest dedicated children’s health facilities in Australia. ELECTIVE SURGERY WAITING LISTS AT 17 YEAR LOW Waiting lists for elective surgery have hit a 17 year low, following the largest ever single injection of funds in Australia’s history. The Andrews Government has boosted funding for elective surgery by $335 million over 4 years. This funding increase has had an immediate effect – with nearly 10,000 fewer people waiting for surgery in the last year compared to 2013. The 2016 Budget delivered funding for an extra 406 police (on top of normal recruiting) in Victoria, taking the total number of police personnel funded by the Andrews Government to 1,152. We’ve got the Police Academy at Glen Waverley operating at capacity to get more cops on the beat earlier and we’re recruiting 400 custody officers to free up police time. There’s also a big boost for equipment and technology so Victoria Police can remain cutting edge. And we’ve continued the roll out of Protective Services Officers to our local train stations. HUGE BOOST to Frontline Police Level Crossings Gone! NORTH, McKINNON AND CENTRE ROADS Three dangerous and frustrating level crossings on the Frankston line were removed 6 months ahead of schedule. The crossings at North Road in Ormond, McKinnon Road in McKinnon and Centre Road in Bentleigh are all gone and each location has a brand new train station. These are all a part of the Andrews Government’s commitment to remove 50 level crossings across Melbourne. And construction on the long awaited Southland station has commenced and will be open next year giving passengers direct access to the Southland Shopping Centre. Steve Dimopoulos Community News Glen Eira College The major rebuild of Glen Eira College is underway. $9.5 million in funding was provided in the first two Andrews Government budgets, and an additional $600,000 has been committed for a competition ready gym. Amsleigh Park Primary School Construction is set to start on the $5.7 million rebuild of Amsleigh Park Primary School, a commitment delivered in the first Andrews Government Budget. The new design of the school looks incredible and will retain but modernise the beautiful red brick building as well as creating brand new spaces for students. Murrumbeena Primary School Under the Bracks Government, Murrumbeena Primary School secured close to $3 million in funding for major works. While this was a terrific outcome, we recognise that a few years have passed and there is now some more work to do. I’m pleased that the Andrews Government is providing Murrumbeena Primary School with $290,000 more in funding for important upgrades. Carnegie Primary School Carnegie Primary School will complete the works in their Masterplan after the injection of $4 million in the second Andrews Government budget. Carnegie Primary required significant funding in order to start the major works. I’m incredibly pleased that we have been able to deliver this for the Carnegie community. Glen Huntly Primary School Glen Huntly Primary has been allocated $290,000 more on top of the $390,000 previously provided to the school. The extra funds will allow the school to complete their already scheduled projects. Clayton North Primary School Clayton North celebrated their 150th anniversary in 2015, and I was thrilled to be with the Minister for Education at the school for the wonderful celebration. We had a great chance to see the needs of the school, and in the last budget Clayton North was provided $160,000 for much needed works. Hughesdale Primary School Hughesdale Primary School will need upgrades in the future to maintain the excellent standard of education. I’m proud that Hughesdale Primary is one of 35 schools in Victoria to secure significant funding from the Andrews Government to plan for the major upgrade of this great school. This is the first but very important step in securing a long term benefit for Hughesdale. I will be working very closely with the school as this plan progresses. Oakleigh Primary School Another one of 35 schools in Victoria to secure major planning funding is Oakleigh Primary School. While it’s already a fantastic school, planning for the future is very important. I look forward to working with the school in the coming years to prepare for the significant upgrade. Mt Waverley Heights Primary After much effort from the school community, Sussex Heights has changed its name to Mount Waverley Heights Primary School to better reflect the local area. The name may have changed but the high quality of the education here remains. I was delighted to be on hand for the new opening and provide some government assistance for the re-branding of the school.

Dangerous Intersections carnegie Traffic lighT fix

I’m really pleased that after local community campaigning over many years, we have secured a fix to the dangerous intersection at Grange and Oakleigh Roads in Carnegie, with new traffic lights to reduce the regular accidents and allow pedestrians to cross this busy road.

I have been very concerned with the dangerous situation here for some time. I raised this matter in Parliament and invited the Minister for Roads to inspect the site with the commitment then being delivered in just the second Andrews Government budget. I’m thrilled that this intersection will finally be fixed. I would like to sincerely thank the community for working with us to get this result.

lOcal inTerSecTiOn fixeSOver $1 million is being delivered to remove high accident spots in Notting Hill, Mt Waverley, Chadstone and Hughesdale. Combined, these intersections have seen at least 29 crashes in the last 5 years – many of them serious. The intersections at Forster, Ferntree Gully and Gardiner Road will get

safer turning lanes, there will be new lighting at Batesford Road as well as new impact absorbing poles and new turning rules for Warrigal Road and Rugby Road.

Huntingdale Bus Interchange anD carparkS

Early work has commenced on the Huntingdale Bus Interchange and new car parks. Thousands of locals and commuters use Huntingdale Station and surrounds every day. A dedicated bus area is on its way with properly paved and marked car parks as well as a specific area for car drop offs. The

$7.6 million works will enhance the Huntingdale area and make it a much safer and welcoming place for the local community and visitors.

The Andrews Government has provided $500,000 for an important upgrade of facilities at Scammell Reserve, which will pave the way for a new state-of-the-art pavilion. This is a well deserved outcome for all the football and cricket teams who use the reserve. The new facility will give players and their families a home base they can be proud of. It will come complete with female friendly facilities to accommodate the rapid rise in women and girls turning to community sport. Girls are playing sport in record numbers, including footy and cricket and they deserve equal facilities. The upgrade will be delivered in partnership with Monash Council.

ambulance waiT TimeS DOwn More Support for ParamedicsBack in 2014, the ambulance service was in crisis. The system was underfunded and paramedics were underpaid. The Andrews Government has invested heavily in ambulances – Victoria now has the best emergency response time in over 5 years. And paramedics are now the best paid in Australia. We’re also rebuilding the ageing Mt Waverley Ambulance Station. We know there is more to do, but we’re getting on with repairing the damage.
