immunocompromised individuals are at increased risk for infection

- antigenic shift (Figure 22.13b) is a major antigenic change that results from the reassortment of genes among different influenza Aviruses infecting the same host cell

Pathogenesis• Symptoms produced by the immune response to the virus• Flu patients are susceptible to secondary bacterial

infections• Virus causes damage to the lung epithelium
