Fans of Stephen Kel logg and the Sixers know how
much energy and heart the band puts into i ts l ive
performances. The audience interact ion is
unbel ievable, the guys are incredib ly enter ta in ing,
and the stor ies that Stephen chooses to te l l
before the songs g ive them new meaning. I t ’s these
types of personal touches that put S ixers shows
on a complete ly d i fferent leve l f rom those of other
bands. With each song per formed, you’re get t ing a
look into the l ives of the band members.
The Fai r f ie ld , CT show, however, was f i l led wi th
even more personal touches. On September 11th,
2009, the Sixers k icked off the new tour in Stephen
Kel logg’s home town wi th a so ld out show.
Before the concert even star ted, you could fee l an
exci ted buzz emanat ing f rom the audience. Everyone
seemed to know each other ; f r iends and fami ly
members of the band were present , and the buzz ing
only stopped when Jeff rey Gaines ( the opening act ,
and f r iend of Stephen Kel logg) announced that the
Sixers were about to come on stage.
Stephen, Boots, K i t , and Steamer opened the show
wi th “The Bear” and got the crowd going. Steamer
(Sam), the Sixers’ newest band member, f i t r ight in
as i f he’d been a part of the band f rom the
very beginning.
Steamer was even asked to he lp fac i l i ta te the dance
movements dur ing “Big Easy,” where the crowd
jo ined in wi th the s ignature hand mot ions that go
a long wi th the song. Everyone in the audience
appeared to be part ic ipat ing. When Stephen made
a joke about a sect ion of the audience being a b i t
weak, they enthus iast ica l ly jo ined in as wel l .
There was a great mix of new songs wi th o ld
favor i tes. “My Old Man,” “Oh Adel ine,” “Sat is f ied
Man,” and “Shady Esperanto and the Young Hearts”
were four out of the f ive new songs that were p layed.
“Sat is f ied Man” is a song that the band has been
p lay ing at shows for awhi le , but hadn’t yet been
re leased on an a lbum. This song g ives the l is tener
the fo lk , acoust ic gu i tar dr iven sound that fans have
loved for years. The lyr ics are beaut i fu l ly
autobiographica l , and the crowd’s at tent ion was
captured. And dur ing the encore, the Sixers had
everyone c lapping a long to “Shady Esperanto and
the Young Hearts” in synchronizat ion!
The band a lso per formed “Days,” a def in i te fan
favor i te . I f you take a moment to look around at the
crowd dur ing th is song you can l i tera l ly see smi les
on the faces of every person and hear the
exci ted chatter.
Af ter the show, the band hung out to speak wi th fans
and fami ly members; the energy never d ied down! I t
was an honor to at tend th is show – i t fe l t l ike be ing
a part of the Sixers’ extended fami ly. I even th ink a
few new fans were made.

As Stephen Kel logg sang, “You win, I hate th is
stuff ,” f rom the apt ly t i t led song You Win, there
was an apparent sense of re levance on th is n ight in
Cedar Fa l ls , Iowa. The concert , a co-headl in ing g ig
featur ing Stephen Kel logg and the Sixers and
Carbon Leaf , was the last day of summer; a Monday.
Th is too was f i t t ing, see ing as how f rom the
beginning of the Sixers set , noth ing went the i r way.
The concert segwayed f rom an e lectr i fy ing
Carbon Leaf set to the Sixers v ia a rendi t ion of Up
On Cr ipple Creek. Both bands jo ined on the f ront of
the stage to s ing as the equipment was changed.
Whi le there may have been 9 men on stage, the song
was essent ia l ly a duet between Stephen and Ki t
“Goose” Kar lson as they bel ted out the lyr ics.
The Sixers then opened up the i r ha l f of the show
wi th Star t the Day Ear ly, a f i t t ing dr ink ing song for
a ha l f -drunk audience. The crowd sang a long to the
catchy chorus and had the i r beer in hand
throughout . As the Sixers moved to the i r next song,
Cedar Falls, IABy: Nick Krob
crowd part ic ipat ion reduced but exc i tement
remained. The Bear prov ided the crowd wi th the
ut i l i zat ion of the tuba and p icked up the momentum
as the music pushed forward.
The rowdy crowd must have been apparent on stage
as Stephen decided to replace the sent imenta l
Sweet Sophia wi th crowd-favor i te Now I ’m Not so
Lost . The joy and happiness was beginning to show
as the Sixers took turns shout ing movie quotes and
jokes. Upon complet ion of the song, Stephen
addressed the crowd to int roduce the next song. As
he to ld the crowd about h is grandma’s adorat ion for
him despi te ye l l ing at a homeless man, i t was
apparent the next song was See Yourse l f .
I t was dur ing See Yourse l f where the problems
began as a squeaking microphone and sharp
feedback spiked at var ious points throughout the
song. Press ing on, Stephen faced backlash f rom
the drunken crowd upon a comment preceding
the next song, Th i r teen. Address ing the crowd, he
WW
thanked everyone in Cedar Rapids for coming out to
the show on a Monday n ight . The problem was that
the show was in Cedar Fa l ls .
Whi le the comment was thought fu l at heart , the
Spina l Tap moment temporar i ly p inned the Sixers
against the crowd. A sense of annoyance grew as
Stephen wished to push forward through the next
song. Facing a skept ica l crowd, approval was s lowly
regained through the en joyable rendi t ion of Th i r teen.
This t ime, K i ts dance mid-song t ru ly saved the day.
The sh i r t less and breath less Goose bowed in
acceptance as the crowd roared in laughter.
Despi te the exci tement , dancing, and fast-paced
music, Stephen Kel logg s lowed th ings down to fu l f i l l
a promise to a fan. The acoust ic rendi t ion of You
Win, a l though s low, quiet , and sent imenta l , had been
requested pr ior to show t ime, and Stephen is not
one to deny a fan. The set t ing was anyth ing but ideal
for such a ser ious and somber song, but the band
pushed on anyway in hopes of sat is fy ing the request .
The band’s luck cont inued to d imin ish as the sound
caused the band t rouble and the crowd disregarded
the beaut i fu l song. Ta lk ing and shout ing marred the
music and le f t l is teners st ra in ing to hear the song.
As the f ina l chords rang, the Sixers decided
someth ing needed to be done to improve the
exper ience for everyone. Af ter tak ing a f ive-minute
break to unsuccessfu l ly t ry and f ix the sound and
correct the problems, the band decided that the
show was now going to be acoust ic , sans
ampl i f icat ion system.
Sport ing acoust ic inst ruments and standing in the
f ront row, the Sixers p layed a crowd-pleas ing
rendi t ion of Mi lwaukee. The 7-minute vers ion
inc luded a descr ipt ion of everyth ing that led each
Sixer to be in the band as Stephen thanked Boots’
inabi l i ty to p lay sports and Sam’s t rouble of meet ing
gi r ls . (cont inued )
Cedar Falls, IABy: Nick Krob
“The ent i re crowd, a long wi th the band,
knew that we a l l won th is n ight .”
Sent imenta l odes Such a Way and See You Later,
See You Soon were replaced wi th s ing-a long Big
Easy to sat is fy the crowd, st i l l uneasy about the
sound t roubles and mistaken town name. Sam’s
Richard Simmons-esque dance moves were noth ing
short of enter ta in ing af ter Stephen demanded h im
to lead the crowd in order to be in i t ia ted into the
Sixers. Stephen won back the crowd af ter s tat ing,
“Come on Sam, I would expect those sh i t ty moves
f rom somewhere l ike Cedar RAPIDS!”
With l i t t le t ime for ta lk or many more songs, the
Sixers quick ly f in ished off the i r set wi th Uninspi red
Gambl ing and 4th of Ju ly. These songs were p layed
with pass ion, in tens i ty and happiness as the crowd
sang a long and danced. Receiv ing a standing
ovat ion, the Sixers put down the i r inst ruments and
went back stage. Not keeping the i r fans wai t ing,
they immediate ly returned for an encore wi th Carbon
Leaf . They opened the encore wi th Rambl in ’ Man
before walk ing into the crowd to p lay the newly
craf ted Goodnight song on of bar stools and tables.
Upon complet ing the song, Stephen l i f ted h is gu i tar,
as sweat g l is tened off each member of the group,
and thanked the crowd. This t ime he was sure to
thank Cedar Fa l ls as the crowd exploded in
applause. The smi les on each member of the group
were unquest ionable and unmistakable as they set
down the i r inst ruments and headed back to meet the
fans. A l l was wel l in the Sixers’ wor ld and another
n ight of music, a l though arduous at t imes, was
successfu l ly completed.
A n ight that wi l l not fade f rom anyone’s memory, the
concert prov ided an inexpl icable bond between
music ian and fan. Maybe that is just a ta lent of
Stephen Kel logg and the Sixers or maybe i t was a
lucky n ight , but the band created a bond and sense
of un i ty and inc lus iveness that cannot be ref lected
through mere records. The appreciat ion fe l t by fans
was matched by the band, as they thanked everyone
for spending the t ime and money to support
the i r pass ion.
Looking back on the i r mid-set per formance of “You
Win,” there was a sense of desperat ion and despai r.
The show was seeming to be headed for d isaster
and the band appeared to be out of luck. Despi te
the problems, however, there was a lways a ca lming
sense of knowing that Stephen Kel logg and the
Sixers would not le t the show die and that they
would a l l overcome. And in doing so, the ent i re
crowd, a long wi th the band, knew that we a l l won
th is n ight .

The show at Duquesne Univers i ty was in the
bal l room of the Univers i ty. There were three openers,
inc luding a local band, Dawn Landes, and Carbon
Leaf , and then the Sixers took the stage. Dur ing
Carbon Leaf ’s set , they gave out f ree CD’s to
anyone who knew the i r opening music. When the
fun on stage wi th Carbon Leaf ended, the Sixers
came to the stage.
They opened wi th songs inc luding “Cabin in the
Woods,” and then went st ra ight into p lay ing the fan
favor i tes inc luding “Star t the Day Ear ly,” and
“Mi lwaukee.” The Sixers were fu l l o f energy, and
were in h igh spi r i ts . Dur ing “Thi r teen,” Goose
decided to break out into h is s ignature dance, and
he had the crowd roar ing wi th cheer and applause.
The crowd at f i rs t was a b i t t imid, but once they saw
how much enthus iasm the Sixers had, they began
jo in ing in , and dancing and s ing ing a long.
A re lat ive ly new fan base was about to be formed,
but there were st i l l some people who knew the words
to every s ing le song. The Sixers embodied the fun
that they were hav ing, and that they wanted the
audience to have, so that the audience would fee l
comfortable en joy ing themselves to the fu l lest
,
extent . The Sixers a lso p layed some new songs
inc luding “Shady Esperanto and the Young Hearts ,”
as wel l as “Mabel ine.”
One of the h igh l ights of the show was “Wagon
Wheel ,” wi th Sam Getz (Steamer ) on pedal s tee l . The
pass ion was ev ident in the enthus iasm that Stephen
Kel logg and the Sixers shared wi th the audience.
However, the audience was a lso respect fu l as the
Sixers per formed “ In Front of the Wor ld,” a song
wr i t ten by Stephen for h is younger brother when h is
younger brother was going off to col lege. For
“F lower in Rain,” Dawn Landes and her f r iend Josh
came on stage to ass ist in p lay ing and vocals . The
s ignature t rack “The Bear” was complete wi th
Goose’s tuba, and the Sixers cont inued to smi le
throughout the n ight .
Dur ing one of the i r songs, Stephen asked the other
band members what they were looking forward to
dur ing the i r short break f rom shows. They a l l
rep l ied wi th the i r thoughts about be ing wi th the i r
fami ly members. Thei r repl ies were heart fe l t , and
t ru ly made me understand the i r emot ions.
There was a lso a point in which Stephen was
rock ing so hard that h is g lasses s l ipped off h is nose,
and Cousin Jess ica saved the day by br ing ing h im
h is contacts; Stephen was very thankfu l for that .
They then concluded the i r set wi th “See you Later,
See You Soon,” and Carbon Leaf and Dawn Landes
quick ly jo ined the stage to jo in the Sixers for the i r
encore. I t was an exhi larat ing per formance, and my
respect on ly grew af ter see ing the Sixers per form
once again.
The show concluded wi th Carbon Leaf and Dawn
Landes, jo in ing the Sixers, both bands in the i r green
sh i r ts , ( to show the i r school sp i r i t for the event
Duquesne was putt ing on) , for the encore which
began wi th “Big Easy.” Steamer led the fans in the
s ignature dance moves for B ig Easy, and the crowd
was energet ic dur ing the chorus. Af ter “Big Easy” by
the Sixers, the group on stage per formed “Another
Man’s Woman” by Carbon Leaf . Last ly, “Rambl in ’
Man” was covered, and the show concluded wi th
the c lass ic “Curta in Cal l ” wr i t ten by Stephen.
Af terwards, both the Sixers and Carbon Leaf were in
f ront of the i r merchandise booths to s ign and speak
wi th the fans. Overa l l , the show was fantast ic , and
once again, the Sixers were successfu l in the i r
a t tempt to get the audience enjoy ing themselves,
and part ic ipat ing in s ing ing and dancing.

There’s noth ing qui te l ike a Stephen Kel logg and the Sixers show. You arr ive
expect ing to hear a l ive band. And you get that — but you a lso receive the
gi f t of a tota l ly in imi table exper ience.
Your heart pangs as you l is ten to the s incere ly r ics, and your l ips cur l in to a
smi le as you hear the story about the g i r l who re jected Boots at the bar. Most
of a l l , when the music ceases and the f ina l cur ta in is drawn, you know that the
band members wi l l soon be out in the lobby. They’ l l greet fans and pose for
seemingly endless photos, because that ’s just the k ind of guys they are.
The Sixers’ abi l i ty to keep each show f resh and exci t ing — of course, whi le
always keepin’ i t rea l — is incomparable. They proved that dur ing a show at
the State Theatre in State Col lege, PA on October 15, 2009.
,
Upon arr iv ing at my seat in the f ront row, I was
d isappointed to learn that I was near ly surrounded
by Carbon Leaf fans. However, that fee l ing
diss ipated when Carbon Leaf f in ished and Stephen
Kel logg and the Sixers appeared on stage.
The Sixers’ f la i r for connect ing wi th concert-goers
rea l ly he lped them on th is tour, and they eas i ly
wooed some of the d ie-hard Carbon Leaf fans
around me. The woman s i t t ing next to me, who had
never at tended a Sixers show, was dancing and
clapping throughout the concert , even shout ing, “ I
love th is song!” dur ing “Shady Esperanto and the
Young Hearts .”
I t was, in the end, a per fect example of how music
can be the great equal izer. The set l is t s tar ted off a
l i t t le s low wi th some unusual choices: “Star t the Day
Ear ly,” “The Bear,” “Sweetest Goodbye,” and “Do.”
Whi le they were a l l per formed wel l , I could sense
that some of the Carbon Leaf fans were dr i f t ing
throughout these re lat ive ly s low songs. The band
may have rea l ized th is , too; “Cradle of Fami ly” was
on the or ig ina l set l is t but was not per formed.
Fan favor i tes “Wagon Wheel” and “Thi r teen” served
to l iven up the audience. Goose danced dur ing
“Thi r teen” — but fu l ly c lothed. The band a lso
orchestrated a l i t t le inst rument choreography for
“Shady” and brought back the “Big Easy” hand
movements for the f ina le wi th Carbon Leaf .
The music medley dur ing “Days” seemed to de l ight fu l ly
surpr ise some Carbon Leaf fans. Nnot many people
can res ist the Ghostbusters song. Whi le the show
was everyth ing that a S ixers show should be — fun,
rock in’ and at t imes contemplat ive — the format of
a co-headl in ing show was d isconcern ing at t imes.
The last two t imes that the band passed through
State Col lege, they f i l led the t iny Chronic Town
Hookah Lounge, which has a capaci ty of about 100
people. The State Theatre, wi th about 550 seats, was
a larger venue that obvious ly carr ied more constra ints .
This led to a more st ructured fee l for the show.
The more profess ional set t ing, the song choices —
and perhaps s imply the v i r tue of tour ing wi th another
band — almost made the show seem a l i t t le
more adul t , for lack of a bet ter word.
As the band members cont inue to grow as both
music ians and as men, the i r music wi l l re f lect a l l o f
l i fe ’s changes. And a long wi th that , maybe the i r
choices of venues wi l l change. Maybe Goose wi l l
never return to “dancing in h is underpants.”
However, I have a fee l ing that the i r shows wi l l
cont inue to be f i l led wi th the heart and the energy
that is representat ive of the great Stephen Kel logg
and the Sixers sound.

Ask any Stephen Kel logg and the Sixers fan how many t imes they have seen the
band l ive. The answer is usual ly more than once. Now ask them why they f ind i t
necessary to see the same band mul t ip le t imes. The answer to th is is most l ike ly
a resounding chorus of the fan pra is ing the band’s r id icu lous leve l of awesome.
F ina l ly, ask these fans how far they drove to get to the show that n ight . The
answer might surpr ise you.
On Saturday, October 17, 2009, Stephen Kel logg and the Sixers p layed the f ina l
show of The Bear Rhymes wi th Woman Tour, the i r co-headl in ing venture wi th
Carbon Leaf . Fans f rom Pennsylvania , New York, New Jersey, West Vi rg in ia ,
Washington D.C. , Ohio, Mary land, Connect icut , and Massachusetts gathered at
Wor ld Café L ive in Phi ladelphia , PA for a n ight of meet ing new people, hear ing
great music, and just en joy ing themselves.
,
The Sixers star ted the i r show in an odd fashion,
s imul taneously c los ing Carbon Leaf ’s set and
opening the i r own wi th “See You Later, See You
Soon,” c lever ly stat ing that instead of see ing them
“ in the moon,” they would be seeing Carbon Leaf
“ in the encore.” The band fo l lowed wi th the o lder
and more emot ional “Pedal Stee l .” Keeping the
rhythmic balance of the songs a l ive, they later
t rans i t ioned into everyone’s favor i te dr ink ing song,
“Star t the Day Ear ly.”
Then came the f i rs t b ig dance number of the n ight .
Stephen, Boots, K i t , and Steamer at tempted to
dance a long wi th the i r newest music v ideo, “Shady
Esperanto and The Young Hearts ,” get t ing the crowd
even more hyped. At th is point , i t was def in i te ly
c lear that Sam Getz, the newest S ixer, f i ts in wi th
the band seamless ly. In an effor t to take a breather
f rom the dance moves, The Sixers s lowed i t down for
a few songs, inc luding “The Amer ica Song,” a rare ly
p layed tune that reminded me of my f i rs t S ixers
show years ago.
The guys unknowingly kept my remin isc ing going
when they p layed “Mi lwaukee,” a personal favor i te
of mine that was p layed acoust ic in the center of
the crowd at my f i rs t S ixers show. The audience, as
usual , sang a long wi th the i r f r iends, adding to the
re laxed atmosphere of Wor ld Café. Af ter the hugging
of f r iends was completed, Stephen took the stage
alone to serenade the crowd wi th the gorgeous
“Sat is f ied Man.”
In t rue Sixer sty le , the guys broke out into a cover
of “ ( I ’ve Had the) T ime of My L i fe ,” dedicat ing the
per formance to Patr ick Swayze. Af ter the ever so
popular l i f t , the band le f t the stage. At th is moment ,
a g i r l s tanding near me who was at tending her f i rs t
S ixers show sa id, “ Is that i t?” wi th a worr ied look
on her face. As i f on cue, Stephen, Boots, K i t , and
Steamer emerged back onto the stage, greeted by
an overwhelming applause.
Obvious ly knowing what the crowd wanted, the guys
p layed “Big Easy,” inc luding the s ignature over
exaggerated dance moves being led by Steamer,
fur ther ind icat ing h is welcome into the band. The
show concluded wi th Carbon Leaf and Dawn Landes
jo in ing the Sixers on stage for a group rendi t ion of
Tom Petty ’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” Another
f lawless and enter ta in ing per formance f rom Stephen
Kel logg and the Sixers? Check.

Stephen Kel logg and the Sixers has been a favor i te band of mine s ince the very
f i rs t t ime I had the opportuni ty to see them in the Spr ing of 2008. The shows I
attend are few and far between, but they’ re never d isappoint ing.
Af ter ten months of not see ing the Sixers, i t was t ime. For the show on November
17, 2009 in Fargo, North Dakota, my best f r iend and I drove 11 or 12 long hours
across the border and through a lot of rea l ly exc i t ing pra i r ie land. A l though th is
seems dreadfu l , we were sure seeing the Sixers again would be worth i t .
,
On the day of the show, af ter jamming to “Star t
the Day Ear ly” in our parked car, we walked into
Dempsey’s Publ ic House and up the sta i rs to the
connected venue ca l led The Aquar ium.
The atmosphere was very smal l and re laxed wi th
very few people. I t ’s probably even safe to say that
most of the people in the venue at one point were
e i ther wi th the Sixers, s taff members for the venue,
or wi th the support ing act , Michael P ink. He p layed
a short but good set wi th a smal l group of l is teners
and af ter he f in ished i t o ff , the Sixers wasted
no t ime.
By 9:00PM The Aquar ium had f i l led up a l i t t le more
wi th fans f rom the area. A few had seen or heard of
the band before (some even long ago) , and of course
there were some who were brand new to th is music.
Before I could b l ink, the Sixers took the very smal l
s tage and began p lay ing “My Old Man” fo l lowed by
“Mar ia .” The energy the crowd had dur ing both these
songs was phenomenal and surpr is ing, but perhaps
these songs were good choices for the pra i r ie fo lks.
The energy never d ied as they cont inued to p lay “A
(Wi th Love) ,” “Star t the Day Ear ly,” and of course,
“Now I ’m Not So Lost .” The movie quote segment of
the lat ter had the crowd laughing, especia l ly when
Boots read an ent i re novel f rom h is b lackberry.
The Sixers then chose to s low i t down a b i t wi th an
acoust ic “Glass jaw Boxer,” which was an amazing
surpr ise. Th is s low pace d idn’t last too long though
when the new s ingle , “Shady Esperanto and the
Young Hearts” was up next . Th is song never fa i ls to
get an ent i re crowd jumping and c lapping a long at
any show, but i t a lso t r iggers a few to dance thanks
to the “Shady Esperanto. . . ” music v ideo. Not on ly
did th is amuse a l l the Sixers on stage, but i t amused
a few crowd members standing up f ront as wel l . I t ’s
safe to say the crowd was def in i te ly fee l ing warm
by now. (cont inued)
,
“See Yourse l f , ” “Thi r teen,” and “Such a Way,” were
then p layed. The Fargo crowd seemed to love the
new song, and then cheered Goose on dur ing h is
very fami l iar “Thi r teen” dance ( fu l ly c lothed th is
t ime) . As an int ro for “Such a Way,” Stephen to ld a
story about a col lege guy f rom North Dakota us ing
th is song to get g i r ls by te l l ing them he wrote i t for
them. Stephen proceeded to say how f lat tered he
was, but then sa id that i f any g i r l fe l l for that . . . wel l ,
you get the idea.
“Big Easy” was a crowd pleaser as i t usual ly is , and
Steamer seemed to p ick up the ro le as the leader of
choreography. He seemed to do just a l r ight at f i rs t ,
but boy d id he improve as the song f in ished up. As
soon as Goose grabbed the tuba af ter that song, i t
was pret ty obvious that “The Bear” was next . Th is
song went a lot l ike “Shady Esperanto. . . ” in the way
that most people seemed to be c lapping, jumping, or
dancing; i t was, of course, a good t ime.
Stephen dedicated “4th of Ju ly” to the t roops, which
gave the song a l i t t le b i t of a new meaning and was
a l i t t le inspi r ing. Inspi rat ion grew as a l l four S ixers
jumped off the stage and walked to the middle of the
f loor for the next song. Everyone formed an in formal
c i rc le around the band for an unplugged vers ion of
“Mi lwaukee.” Old fans, new fans, and var ious groups

of f r iends stood c lose ly. I t was c lear that everyone
enjoyed th is part of the show as i t was one of those
moments where you know you’re not a lone.
The Sixers le f t the stage br ie f ly and returned soon
for a t r ip le encore - “See You Later, See You Soon,”
“L ike a Rol l ing Stone,” and the expected “Curta in
Cal l . ” These three songs were the per fect three
songs to end th is show r ight , and I th ink the Sixers
knew th is when they decided ( last minute) to p lay
“See You Later, See You Soon” instead of “Lonely
in Columbus.” The encore d id just as i t should: i t
ended the show per fect ly for a S ixers show in
the pra i r ies .
Afterward, the Sixers stuck around to meet every fan
as usual , but a lot of fans met and ta lked to other
fans as wel l – music is a lways a good way to meet
people, maybe even your best f r iends. I ’m sure some
new fans were made, and the ones who were a l ready
fans only became bigger fans. Stephen Kel logg and
the Sixers seem to have th is undeniable ta lent where
they can put on a show in such a way that makes
you fa l l in love wi th the music every s ing le day that
you hear i t . That may be every month for some, but
for people who l ive in Fargo and s imi lar areas, i t
fee ls good to be reminded (so very l i t t le ) as to why
you l ike th is band so much.
“Such a way that makes you fa l l in love
with the music every s ing le day.”

New York, NYBy: Chr issy Ware ik is
Since 2007, in order to ce lebrate Stephen’s b i r thday, Stephen Kel logg and the
Sixers have done specia l shows in New York Ci ty on Thanksgiv ing weekend to
ce lebrate. Unfor tunate ly, I could not at tend the f i rs t two years. But th is year, my
mom and I f ina l ly decided i t was t ime to go to NYC for the show on November
28, 2009, and ce lebrate wi th the b i r thday boy!
Each t ime we’ve been to NYC, we’ve stayed in Midtown, and never rea l ly saw
much e lse of Manhattan. Th is t ime, s ince the show was at Bowery Bal l room, we
got to stay downtown. . . in Chinatown, to be exact . Ta lk about confus ing! In
midtown, the st reets are l ike a gr id and are easy to fo l low. Downtown takes
some gett ing used to. Let ’s just say that there was a lot of walk ing one way,
rea l iz ing we were wrong, turn ing back around, and say ing to ourse lves, “Where
are we going?!”
So, af ter a somewhat confus ing walk , we made i t to Bowery for the show. Once
doors opened, we headed st ra ight for the balcony and snagged a spot r ight up
f ront . As I wai ted for the show to begin, I looked down at the f loor and watched
i t qu ick ly f lood wi th fans. They weren’t k idding when they sa id th is show was
sold out .
,
Lucki ly, th is wasn’t one of those shows where I was
dreading the opening act . That ’s because Carbon
Leaf was opening, and af ter see ing them for the f i rs t
t ime twice in Phi ladelphia last month, I couldn’t wai t
to see them again. Before long, Carbon Leaf took the
stage, opening wi th “Lake of S i lver Bel ls ,” a song off
the i r brand new a lbum. From there, they went into
“What About Everyth ing?” which is the one song I
was rea l ly hoping for. Once they got to the last verse
of the song, they stopped and let the crowd s ing the
l ine, “What about that midnight phone ca l l?” then
they p icked up on “ the one that wakes you f rom your
peace. . .” For me, that was awesome because i t ’s my
favor i te l ine in the song.
Carbon Leaf p layed more of the i r fan favor i tes,
inc luding “One Pra i r ie Outpost ,” “L i fe Less Ordinary,”
and “Let Your Troubles Rol l By.” They a lso threw in a
Beat les cover, “Dear Prudence,” and dedicated the i r
song “The War Was In Color” to our so ld iers
f ight ing overseas.
When Carbon Leaf f in ished the i r set , there was a
short in termiss ion whi le the stage was set up for the
Sixers. Before long, and af ter some humorous int ro
music, they took the stage, opening wi th “My Old
Man.” To get the crowd hyped, they went st ra ight
into “Mar ia ,” which got everyone up and ready
to rock.
After a few songs, inc luding the latest S ixers h i t ,
“Shady Esperanto and the Young Hearts ,” Stephen
had an unfor tunate gui tar mal funct ion and the
concert had to be stopped for severa l moments.
Goose and other crew members went to work to f ix
i t whi le Stephen took a break backstage. Boots and
Sam kept the crowd enter ta ined by improv is ing on
the i r inst ruments. (cont inued)

“Not only the song, but the ent i re
tour, ended wi th a bang.”
,
Before long, Goose saved the day and got Stephen’s
gui tar in work ing order again. He thanked the crowd
for our pat ience as Stephen took the stage again. He
picked up h is gu i tar, p layed a chord, and breathed
a s igh of re l ie f when i t could f ina l ly be heard by the
whole audience. “My best f r iend,” he sa id, re fer r ing
to Goose. “ I couldn’t funct ion wi thout h im.”
“Nei ther could we,” my mom and I rep l ied out loud.
Great minds th ink a l ike.
The concert cont inued wi th an o ld ie , “Southern
State of Mind” and an acoust ic rendi t ion (Boots
on mandol in and Goose on the accordion) of
“Glass jaw Boxer.”
“Mi lwaukee” was one of my favor i te songs of the
n ight . But then again, that song is one of my
favor i tes, per iod. I a lways look forward to hear ing
what k ind of new improv is ing Stephen does in the
middle of the song. Th is t ime, he sang about h is love
for h is fami ly, f r iends, and how he never wanted to
stop making music.
“Diamond” was dedicated to h is wi fe , who was in
a t tendance. “See You Later, See You Soon”
appropr iate ly c losed out the set . But of course,
i t just wouldn’t be a S ixers show wi thout a k i l le r
encore. They came back for an upbeat rendi t ion of
“F lower In Rain,” and then inv i ted Carbon Leaf back
on stage for “Big Easy” and “Curta in Cal l . ” Rais ing
the i r g lasses, they made a f ina l toast to the last
show of the tour.
They le f t the stage again, but the fans kept on
cheer ing, as i f they wouldn’t fee l complete un less
there was at least one more song. The band happi ly
came back for not one, but two more: “Such a Way,”
which appropr iate ly takes p lace in New York Ci ty,
and “Thi r teen.” In the middle of the song, Stephen
to ld the audience that Goose had a cer ta in “ je ne
sais quoi” about h im, and that when someone has
that cer ta in “ je ne sa is quoi ,” they should share i t !
With that , Stephen, Boots, Sam, and the whole
crowd star ted chant ing, “ i f you can’t dance in your
underpants, then you don’t s tand a chance!” With
l i t t le hes i tat ion, Goose obl iged and gave the crowd
a f ina l thr i l l : H is famous underpants dance. Not on ly
the song, but the ent i re tour, ended wi th a bang.

,
i f my spir it should offend, do not stay unti l the end.
but i f you stay, stay long enough let the music f i l l your cup.
as the f inal curtain cal ls, we might stumble, we might fal l .
we would stay here evermore, but the magic can’t endure.
so to our troubles we’l l return with new fr iendships much deserved,
may the wind stay behind the paupers and celebrit ies.
