Step by step manual hwo to install and configure EMC2 running “bluumax” homemade CNC

I have created this manual due to me experience only, with help and guide from Shawn (bluumax) and John from yahoo support group that bluumax created, thank you all for your help !!!

This manual starts from the assembling CNC parts, Wiring, downloading Ubuntu 10.4 for EMC2 installation, installing EMC2, configure and testing EMC2.

This guide created to help some guys like me who like runing Ubuntu / EMC2 and not any windows version, i can say that most of the useful softwares will run under windows platform and not Linux.so keep that in mind

Part 1 – Package .......................................................................................................................................... 2

Part 2 – assembling ...................................................................................................................................... 3

Part 3 – wiring .............................................................................................................................................. 4

Part 4 – download and install Ubunto ......................................................................................................... 6

Part 5 - Configure EMC ............................................................................................................................ 7

Part 6 – run first test .................................................................................................................................. 13

Part 1 – Package Before starting with assembling check for the requirements:

Tools you may need, etc.

I have got an invitation to come visit the post office – got package form “overseas”

Got the package:

Package contains: Tubes, leadscrews, stepper drive and motor

After assembling your CNC it will look like this:

Part 2 – assembling

Start follows site instruction and 3d drawings from site:

http://www.bluumaxcnc.com/Gantry-Setup.html

Leave wiring for the end, you may like to build a dedicated Box of electronic packaging.

Assembling guide is pretty strait and easy double check the screws you are using for each parts.

Part 3 – wiring

There is generic wiring setup, easy to wiring and easy to mistaken

It is best you will open user in bluumax yahoo CNC Group, this will gain you access to print screen files, pdf and nice Gallery.

Some of the links in this document point you to files in that forum.

This wiring instruction print-screen file can also found in:

The best is checking this Driver PDF that will give you more understanding of how the driver connects the main board:

Part 4 – download and install Ubunto

Now that you have assembled your nice CNC and wired it up you can download your Ubuntu with EMC2.

All you need is following the instruction:

http://www.linuxcnc.org/

Check for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Long-Term Supporthttp://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

After download the file burn it on CD, and install Ubuntu.

You have installed Ubuntu, connected it to internet, access again to

Follow those steps:

Under this section –

“If you prefer to start with the distributed Ubuntu CD, you can install EMC2 yourself with these instructions”

http://www.linuxcnc.org/content/view/21/4/lang,en/

When you run the EMC2 sh script it will ask you do download some updates for Ubuntu.

Allow it.

After complete you are almost there.

Part 5 - Configure EMC

After EMC2 will be installed you will have CNC Group in Ubuntu menu.

Start with the CNC “wizard”

And follow those screen shots, download the file and extract it.

Under bluumax yahoo Group

Those are the steps:

You can also found a lot of information in this forum:

In case you will need to revert the CNC movement uncheck the “ESTOP Out”

If you r using the original Bluumax CNC set the “Table Travel”

Related to those settings:

Test your Axis by using the log right and left for flawless motion

http://www.bluumaxcnc.com/Gantry-Router.htmlTravel with 16"x 24" table (Cut area 12" x 17")Z travel 2" with 3 adjustable heights. Check this to learn about Home – and + and some other samples.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bluumax/photos/album/408362102/pic/1991063578/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&count=20&dir=asc

Apply and save our setting

Now you need to start testing

After you know how to move your Axis left and right, up and down, you can change the direction of any

of them in the first parallel setting.

You are ready for the first test

Part 6 – run first test

When done with configuration files the wizard will create folder with your Mill profile related to the configuration you have applied , meaning you can create many configuration files related to your needs instead of reconfigure the same file.

Now click your Mill (launch my-mill) and test the axis.ngc startup file, this is done by:

press F1 to relesa "Toggle Emergancy Stop"

press F2 "Toggle Machine Power"

now the "manual controle" features will be available - you will need to set all Axis to home before start.

after all Axis are at home you will be able to run the program.

now that your CNC is running you will have a lot of Q, what i am going to do next, from ware to start,

what is G-Code , what is DXF file, Dwg, cb, CamBam,what is CAD, CAM ....etc

i can recommend for some fine sites , forums to start with:

start with http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bluumax/ in case you have any Q issue related to you CNC.

http://www.linuxcnc.org/component/option,com_kunena/Itemid,20/lang,english/

http://www.cncinformation.com/

http://www.cnczone.com/

and there are a lot more.

most of the above are from bluumax Yahoo Group, other from articles on the web.

hope i have help a bit.
