Years ago while at Versailles Palace I was
struck by the different hues in the tiny glass
panels of the French-doors and windows.
In no particular artistic application, these
delicate panes looked like a contemporary
art installation. The tiny glass panes and their
unexpected beauty became decorative in their
own purpose, without trying to extend beyond
anything more than their practical reason for
existence. I was deeply impressed with this
unpretentious display, and I appreciate most
applications of glass even today with the same
understanding.
Today, glass is a much finer product, but its
beauty still lies in its practical application: to
contain, to support, to see beyond containment,
to blur the hard vision of reality, to hold, to
allow light and to present any product with
beauty. The aesthetic value and expression of
glass is mostly linked to its practical purpose.
Glass allows by its nature of translucency, the
opportunity to create inside, on top or around
it. Its ability to reflect creates atmosphere,
needed for any event; it allows opportunity as
vast as its endless possibilities. It’s for these
reasons I love and work with glass.
We create today; tomorrow we start from nothing. That’s the process. And our success. Franz Gräbe Flower Couture … always looking at new trends, always reinterpreting them and thus conceptualising their own unique style. “Dispos-able art” as they call their work. Momentarily beautiful, fleeting, and then gone. Resident florist to establishments such
as The Westcliff, The Saxon, Park Hyatt and The Sandton Sun, to name a few, as well as private clients, weddings and functions on request. His work is described as “perfect and innovative beyond anything ever seen”.

“When you put glass on a table it
evokes a specific flair of elegance,
sophistication and style.”

“Cut-glass equals vintage and
romance, clear glass indicates
contemporary design, red and
bronze glass create a rich Baroque
effect, while black and white glass
create an instant perception of
sophistication and top-end design.”
Franz Grabe
Glass doesn’t age, so along with its lifespan, the opportunities are endless. Turn a glass jar into an atrium, a vase, a table centrepiece – the only limits are that of imagination
“I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.”
Glass: simply wash it
and reuse it – again
and again

innovative glass
