Goal 3: Provide students access to rigorous programs and deeper learning experiences
● Addition of Cybersecurity as available pathway○ Cybersecurity replaces Computer Systems Technology○ Cybersecurity will have a Level II course in the 2019-2020 school
year○ CIED will have a Level II in the 2019-2020 school year
● Exploring practicum or internship experiences to maintain business partnerships and real-world deeper learning experiences for students
LCPS Mission: Empower all students to make meaningful contributions to the world
MATA Transitioning
MATA Transitioning
Identified Issues:
1. Quality of student experience significantly impacted in a few specific courses shifting from two- to one-year programs.
2. No IT options for continued studies for rising seniors currently enrolled in CISCO course (lack of communication)
3. Limited opportunities for students to participate in practicum or real-world experiences.
MATA Transitioning
Proposed strategies to address identified issues:
I. Adding a Level III course (second year) for three programs:
● Auto Servicing Technology● Graphic Communications● Welding
Benefits Challenges
● Maintain multiple certification opportunities for AST students
● Provide deeper learning experiences for students lost when shifting to 1-year program
● Maintain opportunity for students to engage with the community
● Fewer students have the opportunity to enroll (shifting these programs to 2-year programs would mean 60 fewer students able to enroll each year)
MATA Transitioning
Goal 3: Provide students access to rigorous programs and deeper learning experiences Mr. Doe’s Schedule
A - Day B-Day
2018-2019 SY
Cohort B (Maximum of 20 students)Welding I in Semester IWelding II* in Semester II(Note: Students would be Juniors)
Cohort A (Maximum of 20 students)Welding III in Semesters I and II(Note: Students would be Seniors who were enrolled in Welding I and II at MTC during the 2017-2018 SY)
2020 - 2021 SY
Cohort C (Maximum of 20 students)Welding I in Semester IWelding II* in Semester II(Note: Students would be Juniors)
Cohort B (Maximum of 20 students)Welding III in Semesters I and II(Note: Students would be Seniors returning from previous year)
2021 - 2022 SY
Cohort D (Maximum of 20 students)Welding I in Semester IWelding II* in Semester II(Note: Students would be Juniors)
Cohort C (Maximum of 20 students)Welding III in Semesters I and II(Note: Students would be Seniors returning from previous year)
Twenty new students have the opportunity to complete the Welding pathway each year. Up to twenty students would be allowed to deepen their learning and complete a Welding III course.
MATA Transitioning
Proposed strategies to address identified issues:
II. Offer an IT option for current CISCO students
● Cybersecurity I option for current CISCO students (rising 12th graders) - available for next year only
● Intent form process● Current CST students have the option to apply for CISCO as
rising 12th graders
MATA Transitioning
Proposed strategies to address identified issues:
III. Utilize Placement Coordinator to support students with job placements, liaison with business partners, and find apprenticeship opportunities
● Orchestrate practicum opportunities for students● Find business opportunities for students● Gather internship opportunities and link them with
students● Potentially supervise a small number of teacher assistants
MATA Transitioning
Next Steps:
● Receive intent forms for CISCO students interested in enrolling in Cybersecurity for 2018-2019
● Communicate with applicants for Auto Servicing Technology, Graphic Communications, and Welding to indicate addition of Level III (year 2) for each program
● Communicate with students currently enrolled in Auto Servicing Technology, Graphic Communications, and Welding about the option to enroll in Level III for 2018-2019
● Improve communication with and among MTC staff as we transition to MATA
● Work with staff to identify practicum opportunities for other MATA courses and support student placement in these opportunities
MATA Transitioning
Additional Next Steps:
● Monitor enrollment in all programs, including programs with Level I/II (year 1) and Level III (year 2)
● Monitor industry and community need for different course opportunities
Academies of Loudoun Admissions for MATA
Academies of Loudoun Admissions for MATA
Updates for fall 2018
Goal: Have a transparent admissions process by articulating criteria (posted on the website), simplifying the admissions process for students (new paperless admissions portal is fully integrated with LCPS Student Information System) (SIS), and noting that there are additional admissions requirements for all Dual Enrollment and MATA Practical Nursing pathways
a. More DE courses than before drives the qualifying criteria. Students must also meet the qualifying scores for NOVA
b. For MTC, there was a teacher recommendation and counselor recommendation. We removed the teacher recommendation and kept the counselor recommendation because it gives us a better snapshot of the whole student, rather than one teacher perspective
c. There is no one criteria that eliminates or disqualifies a student; we take a comprehensive, holistic look at the whole student
Academies of Loudoun Admissions for MATA
Next Steps:
● Complete admissions process for the 2018-2019 school year● Reflect on process and consider possible adjustments for
2019-2020 school year. Adjustments might include: ○ proctored writing sample (interest statement, etc.)○ submission of a resume including relevant experiences
Academies of Loudoun Facilities Update
AOL Parking Plan
In collaboration with LCPS Division of Construction Services Project Executive Tony McGraw, we have identified:
● Faculty and Staff Parking● Visitor Parking● Handicapped Parking● Student Parking (275 spaces available each day)
Completed designated signage plan for all parking lot areas
LCPS Parking LotteryProcess
● We will have a designated date (well published) when all students who want to enter the parking lottery have to submit their application (no money collected)
● Seniors will get priority ● Students submitting applications for the entire year will be
given priority● Students who receive a “lottery” spot will have 2 weeks to
submit payment (then they forfeit their spot and will go on the waitlist)
● Applications submitted after the deadline will be placed on the waitlist in the order that they are received
