Professional Development Opportunities for Teachers

NGSS 101 - Learning the Basics (K-12)March 3, 8:00am – 4:00 pmIntroductory activities will be used to explore the shifts and deepen your understanding from the 1998 standards to the NGSS. The three dimensions of NGSS will be experienced as they relate to classroom lessons and instruction that you can begin using immediately.

NGSS Hands On Learning Strategies forScientific Investigations (K-5)March 13, 4:30pm – 8:30pmStudents should have opportunities to plan and carry out several different kinds of investigations during their K-12 years. At all levels, they should engage in investigations that range from those structured by the teacher—in order to expose an issue or question that they would be unlikely to explore on their own.

NGSS Hands On Developing and Using Models (K-5)March 29, 4:30pm – 8:30pmHow can you see what your students are thinking? Modeling represents ideas and explanations and is one of the new Science and Engineering Practices. Walk away with strategies you can begin using immediately in your classroom.

NGSS Developing and Using Models for Grades 6-12 EducatorsApril 17, 4:30pm – 8:30pmModels and the practice of modeling are key components to assess student understanding. We will investigate strategies and activities that can be adapted for implementation into grades 6-12.

Biotech Bootcamp for Grades 6-8July 10-12, 9:00am – 2:30pmStudents will learn how to use the tools of biotechnology, separate molecules, quantify proteins, and insert DNA into bacteria.Price: $175 (includes lunch)

Biotech Bootcamp for Grades 9-10July 17-19, 9:00am – 2:30pmStudents will make solutions, analyze DNA, purify proteins, separate molecules, transform bacteria, and clone DNA fragments.Price: $200 (includes lunch)

Creative Coding for Grades 5-6Tentatively Scheduled for June 12-13, 9:00am – 2:00pmKids can start programming in elementary school! Scratch, an object-oriented programming language is capable of doing all sorts of computer tasks, even designing or modifying classic video games! (25) students maximum.Price: $100 (includes lunch)

NetLogo Video Game Development for Grades 7-8June 26-27, 9:00am – 2:00pmThis Coding Camp will expose students in grades 7-8 to the basic computer programming/coding skills. They will also have the opportunity to work with NetLogo which is a multi-agent programmable modeling environment to create their own simulations. (25) students maximumPrice: $100 (includes lunch)

Floodplain and Delta Ecology InstituteJune 6-8, 3 full daysThis institute brings together the curricula of EEI, Delta Studies and Project WET to create meaningful activities for the classroom and interesting content learning for the teacher. $200 Stipend and 2 units available.

Advanced Robotics with Lego EV3 for grades 6-12July 23-26, 9:00am – 12:00pm

This is a fun, advanced class using the powerful Mindstorms LEGO EV3 robotics system. Students will explore electrical and engineering concepts, build various robots with different sensors, and use the computer to program their robots to respond to sensors and perform desired tasks including advanced problem solving. Technology Boutique with Arduinos for Grades 6-12July 12-13, 9:00am – 2:00pm

In this class, we will learn the basic concepts of writing code for the Arduino, an inexpensive, hobby microcontroller. We will have fun experimenting with wiring Arduino LilyPads with LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes) to create and take-home wearable high-tech fashion and other projects.
