2013-2014 SPECIAL PROJECT CAMPAIGN

Learning from every angle.

Page 2: STEM: Learning from Every Angle

STEM CREATES AN ECOSYSTEM OF LEARNING WHERE SUBJECTS INTERCONNECT, LESSONS INTERRELATE, AND ONE STUDY FEEDS INTO THE NEXT--—providing students with a learning dynamic that fosters a more holistic understanding of the world around them. The momentum that ensues from this interconnectivity propels engaged learners toward academic achievement, not just in science and math, but all subjects. By connecting all these elements within our modern curriculum, fast forward is the only direction.

OPPORTUNITYUnlike many schools that must raise funds to fill a gap in their operating budgets, tuition dollars fully fund Charlotte Preparatory School’s budget. However, with the School’s nonprofit status, Charlotte Prep now offers tax deductibility for those who make charitable gifts in support of projects that enhance their children’s educational experience and build on the School’s forty-year tradition of excellence.

OUR NEEDSWe live in an era of swift and seemingly limitless change. New technologies continue to revolutionize every facet of our lives in our increasingly interconnected world. Amidst that change, our school’s vision remains steadfast: Charlotte Preparatory School is committed to providing each student with exceptional academic and social preparation for personal, professional, and leadership success in the twenty-first century’s rapidly changing, global environment.

OUR STUDENTS - YOUR CHILDREN - WILL INHERIT A WORLD WHERE DISCOVERY AND INNOVATION DRIVE OPPORTUNITY AND GROWTH.

Their generation must think critically and creatively, and solve complex problems, if they are to adapt to tomorrow’s challenges. That is why Charlotte Preparatory School is focusing its resources on four distinct, yet interwoven fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Why STEM? The answer is clear: technological innovation accounted for almost half of this country’s economic growth over the past fifty years. The past is indeed prologue: almost every occupation expected to grow the fastest in the next decade will require knowledge and understanding of STEM - and mastery of critical thinking skills developed through STEM education.

The future will be written in the language of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our school is committed to equipping our students with the tools they need to be authors of their own futures, bright with possibility.

OUR STEM INITIATIVECharlotte Prep is taking the next big step in defining STEM education. As part of the School’s strategic plan, STEM has been identified as one of Charlotte Prep’s five key priorities. Strategy number two states: Amplify students’ use of technology to enrich curriculum content, enhance curriculum delivery, teach protocols for virtual working, and initiate its seamless integration into each student’s lifelong learning.

Charlotte Preparatory School is pleased to announce that our Annual Special Project campaign will focus on STEM, with a goal of raising $225,000. Your gift will help provide upgraded science labs school-wide and technology enhancements for all grade levels. These teaching tools will prepare our students for the careers of tomorrow in an increasingly competitive global economy. More importantly, with your support, our students will develop the strategic thinking skills and adaptive mindset necessary for achieving success in our ever-changing world.

STEM EDUCATION ENCOMPASSES MANY FIELDS, AND MANY PRIORITIES EMERGED. WE HAVE PRIORITIZED THEM IN THREE “TIERS” - TIER ONE REFLECTS THE CORE PRIORITIES OF THE SCHOOL AS IT SEEKS TO IMPROVE ITS STEM RESOURCE BASE; TIERS TWO AND THREE ENCOMPASS ELEMENTS THAT WOULD FURTHER ADVANCE OUR STEM EDUCATION PROGRAM.

CHARLOTTE PREP 101Charlotte Preparatory School is a pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade college preparatory coeducational day school located on a 13-acre campus in southeast Charlotte.

In 2012, Charlotte Prep began writing a new chapter in its forty-year history when it transformed from a privately owned school to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution. The School is now governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees and led by Head of School Blair Fisher, who was appointed to the position in 2012.

The School seeks to build on its longstanding commitment to its mission. Charlotte Prep’s promise that the School provide students with “an extraordinary educational experience founded on academic excellence, character development, and leadership in a culturally diverse community” is the foundation upon which this learning community continues its advancement.

Charlotte Prep continues to strengthen its focus on inspiring passionate learners and fostering the growth of young leaders. Hallmarks of the School include:

• AN ENCOURAGING, CARING ENVIRONMENT THAT NURTURES THE WHOLE CHILD,

• SMALL CLASS SIZES AND AN OPTIMAL STUDENT-TEACHER RATIO,

• A DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION PREPARED TO EXCEL IN AN INCREASINGLY GLOBAL SOCIETY, AND

• A STUDENT BODY THAT IS HIGHLY RECRUITED BY CHARLOTTE-AREA AND REGIONAL INDEPENDENT HIGH SCHOOLS AND BOARDING SCHOOLS.

SUPPORT OUR CAMPAIGNReaching our goal of $225,000 will fully fund enhancements to our STEM educational program and empower our teachers to prepare Charlotte Prep students for the challenges of our ever-changing world. Equally important is 100 percent participation by Charlotte Prep families. Fulfilling this goal will send a strong message to private and corporate foundations that our whole community, without exception, is committed to our students – an important threshold in their decision to provide their own support to our school. One-hundred percent of faculty, staff, and Trustees have already supported our STEM initiative – and we ask that you join them. Whether you give $10 or $10,000, your gift matters!

Please contact Director of Development Melissa Harrison at 704-366-5994 ext. 1132 to discuss gift opportunities and suggested pledge plans.
