STEM—SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHEMATICS Often referred to as the jobs of the future, STEM careers are in strong demand as the need for workers in high-paying STEM fields continues to grow, resulting in greater economic opportunity for years to come. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Career Outlook, overall STEM employment is expected to grow about 13 percent between 2012 and 2022—faster than the 11 percent rate of growth projected for all occupations over the decade.

CCAC offers a wide range of certificate and degree programs in the STEM fields. Certificate programs are ideal for students who already have a degree in another field. Certificate program graduates who wish to continue their studies at CCAC can complete the additional courses required for the associate degree program of their choice. Both certificate and degree programs enable students to develop the skills and knowledge needed for entry-level positions. Additionally, degree programs provide the opportunity for graduates to transfer to a four-year school to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Students can transfer credits to participating Pennsylvania colleges and universities through the Pennsylvania Transfer and Articulation Center (PA TRAC).

For more information about the PA TRAC program, visit pacollegetransfer.com. Students interested in pursuing a four-year degree should work with a CCAC counselor to select courses that will transfer to their college or university of choice.

RAEES KHAN wasn’t sure where he wanted to go to college after his high school graduation, but he knew he wanted to pursue his interest in science at an affordable school where he could explore his options—he soon found all that, and much more, at CCAC.

At first, Khan was interested in CCAC’s Nanotechnology program, but upon taking Calculus 1, he became intrigued with mathematics. His professor encouraged his newfound interest by giving him physics problems to bolster his analytical skills. Khan was further inspired after learning that his professor, who also began his education at CCAC, ended up working at the world’s foremost nuclear research facility—a career path Khan would also like to emulate.

During his frequent visits to the South Campus Math Café to use a particular software application, Khan would often help other students with their questions. Before long, he was asked if he would like a job as a tutor—his employment at the café has been a win-win for both Khan and the students he serves. Khan’s tutoring schedule is jam-packed each week with classmates who routinely seek his assistance. “What I like most about tutoring is that I get to connect with other students while reinforcing what I’ve learned.” In addition to CCAC’s reasonable tuition and small class sizes, Khan likes the fact that he has been able to explore different programs and discover his true interests. Since enrolling, he has recommended CCAC to many of his friends as well as his older brother, who has joined him on campus. Khan is on track to graduate with an Associate of Science in Physics. He plans to earn his bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh, where he hopes to become a teaching assistant. His ultimate goal is to join the team at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland.
