StatisticsCoronary heart disease is the most common

type of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually.

Every year about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 525,000 are a first heart attack and 190,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack.

What Is A Stem Cell?Slowly dividing unspecialized cells

When undergoing cell division these cells can either remain a stem cell or become a cell with a more specialized function.

Types of Stem Cells

Embryonic Stem CellsDerived from embryos developed from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro in an in vitro fertilization clinic* In vitro is Latin for in glass meaning in a laboratory dish or test tube; an artificial environment

Somatic Stem CellsUndifferentiated cells found amongst cells in a tissue or organ that can renew itself. The primary roles of adult stem cells are to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found.

Adult stem cells have been found in…

Brain, Bone Marrow, Peripheral Blood, Blood Vessels, Skeletal Muscle, Skin, Teeth, Heart etc.

Survey Statistics90% Of people know what a stem cell is

75% Of people know someone who has suffered from a heart attack

Only 37% of people know about the possibility of using stem cell therapy to treat heart tissue damaged in a heart attack

When asked to choose between a traditional treatment and stem cell therapy 70% of people said they would rather stem cell therapy.

Success StoriesCarron Morrow suffered her fourth heart attack at the age of 58 in

July 2006. Instead of her typical 70 hour workweek, she could only walk for 20 feet before taking rest. Carron enrolled in a FDA-approved study at the Texas Heart Institute Stem Cell Center. In October 2006, bone marrow was removed from her hip and transplanted into the right side of her heart. By the spring of 2007 she was working up to 80 hours.

Adult stem cells were used to repair the heart of Steve Nemeth after a large artery in his heart became clogged. The only conventional option was a bypass. But Steve decided to participate in a small Phase 1 trial at the National Center for Regenerative Medicine. Stem cells with the potential to form new blood vessels were harvested from the bone marrow in Steve's hip then infused back into the patient's heart using a catheter. After this Steve’s life quickly improved as his heart regenerated into a healthy one.
