Stay clean to prevent illnessEvery year between Novemberand May thousands of babies andtoddlers across the Western Capeseek access to treatment for dehy-dration due to diarrhoea.

Western Cape Minister of Health,Theuns Botha, said parents shouldbe very conscious of hygiene andcleanliness during this period.“Deathas a result of diarrhoeaand

dehydration is totally preventablethrough basic precautions.“By making up a simple solution

of one litre of water, eight teaspoonsof sugar and half a teaspoon of salt, and giving it to your baby, toddler oranyothermemberof your family, lit-tle sips at a time, as often as possible, you can save a life.”If your child suffers from diar-

rhoea or has a runny tummy, vomitsorrefuses tobreastfeed, thenasugar-salt solution (SSS) is recommended. However, should the signs persist

thechildmustbe takento thenearestclinic immediately.Do not wait in the queue to be seen

– please report to reception immedi-ately, Botha said.“Summer has, for many mothers

andcaregivers, becomesynonymouswith runny tummies, unhappy tod-dlers and fear of death due to dehy-dration.”The Western Cape Department of

Health will embark on an on-goingcampaign focusedonprevention,hy-giene, oral rehydration and dangersigns.“Healthcare staff are committed to

educatingourcitizensabout thedan-gers of diarrhoea in children underfive years and infants, who are espe-cially vulnerable.”There are many ways to prevent

infection in our children and babies.Diarrhoea is highly infectious and ismore likely to infect and affect chil-dren and adults when hygiene is ig-nored.

) Wash your hands: This is thefirst step to avoiding all kinds of ill-

nesses. In other words, ifyou have changed baby’snappy and are now going tofeed, you must wash yourhands first! Even if yourhome does not have run-ning water, keep a plasticbottle filled with waterhandy, so thatyoucanrinseyour hands with clean wa-ter after washing them.

) Keep play and eatingareas clean: Keeping thearea clean where childrenplay, sleep and eat is of ut-most importance.Althoughthis sounds easy, it is im-portant to remember thatone should wash feedingbottles anddummies inhot, soapy water and rememberto rinse well. Babies andtoddlerslovetoputallkindsof things into theirmouths.Their “chew” toys shouldtherefore be kept separatefromother toysandmustberinsed regularly. Whateveryoudo, donot share toysbe-tween babies as this is aquick way to spread germsof any kind, especially diar-rhoea.

) Keeptheareaaroundyour home spotless: Do not let gar-bage and other food-related rubbishlie around, as these attract flieswhich can cause illness. Otherthingsthatcauseillnessaredirtywa-ter, broken toilets, rubbish and con-taminated food. Do not allow chil-dren to play inpuddles of dirtywateror furrows of drainage water. Al-ways remove animal waste andthrow it away. The provincial government’s

health department has a multisecto-rial team, which meets weekly dur-ing the diarrhoea season. This teamdrives activities including the train-ing of staff in effective clinical meth-ods. They also check water quality, toilets and general sanitation.

They focus on areas where casesof diarrhoea occur and conducthouse to house outreach activities tomanage the problem. This coordinated approach has

seenasignificantdropinthenumberof diarrhoea deaths over the past fewyears. All provincial governmental

health facilities have Oral Rehydra-tion Treatment (ORT) corners orrooms.Mothers and caregivers are urged

to visit these areas for informationabout the prevention and treatmentof diarrhoea, and also how to makeand use the sugar-salt solution (SSS)whentheirchildrenshowearlysignsof diarrhoea.

Minister Theuns Botha has urged parents to keep theirchildren healthy with hygienic practises.
