Greetings! April was an exciting month where we successfully concluded yet another Singapore Yacht Show and scored a great win at the Asian Boating Awards. We are grateful that

ONEº15 has once again attained pole position as Best Asian Marina for the seventh time. Rest assured we are not resting on our laurels as we continue to work hard to maintain our standing as a premier club offering world-class services.

Besides the memorable award ceremony, visitors and yachting enthusiasts were super thrilled to be at the Singapore Yacht Show where they were wowed by the sailing behemoths that berthed at our marina. From the 78.9ft fl ybridge Ferretti 780 to the 87.1ft Azimut Grande 27 Metri. C, we were all mesmerised by the sheer scale of these luxurious sailing wonders. Each of these superyachts were not only innovative in design, but were also outfi tted with sleek interiors. We hope these jewels of the sea sail by again and again, bigger and better.

Another vessel that made its way to our marina was Vega, a 125-year-old wooden boat helmed by humanitarians Shane Granger and Meggi Macoun. Find how you can contribute towards her humanitarian efforts on page 18.

On home ground, Members, volunteers and our colleagues also paid it forward at the Eco Dive 2018 by taking part in removing 200kg of trash from the

WHAT’S ON

Art From The StreetsOnce viewed as an act of vandalism, street art is now widely accepted in the contemporary art world. And to celebrate 40 years of street art, ArtScience Museum is charting street art’s countercultural beginnings to its stellar rise in the art world now with Art from the Streets, which runs from now till 3 June.

There are six themed sections—The Pioneers and the Masters, The Advent of Message, Stencil World, New Writings, Art of the Context, and Getting Up—and the exhibition starts with the roots of street art in Philadelphia during the 1960s. It then became very popular in New York during the 1970s and

soon evolved from simple graffi ti to conceptual designs.

Curated by street art expert and gallerist Magda Danysz, this exhibition features works from some of the most famous names in the world, such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Invader, JR, Blek le Rat and Vhils. Yogyakarta-based artist Eko Nugroho and Singaporean urban artists Speak Cryptic as well as Yok & Sheryo are also part of this list of talents. Tickest are available at ArtScience Museum.

This two-day event featured over 19 outcomes-focused roundtables, case studies and interactive panel sessions combined with live audience polling.

The opening ceremony on 12 April— witnessed by other invited honourable guests—marked the offi cial start to this year’s SYS and was offi ciated by SUTL Enterprise Group Chairman/CEO Arthur Tay, Assistant Chief Executive of Sentosa Development Corporation Jacqueline Tan and CEO/Founder of Singapore Yacht Show Andy Treadwell. There was a spectacular lion dance peformance to usher in good tidings before the iconic sounding of the horns by Arthur Tay, Jacqueline Tan and Andy Treadwell. All the boats and yachts at the marina echoed right after and the atmosphere was lively and bustling. That was followed by the grand ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate this stellar event.

SUTL Enterprise also signed a deal with telco StarHub on 12 April to launch ONE°15 Life, a peer-to-peer digital market place for carefully curated lifestyle and marina-related experiences such as yacht charters and private jet hires. In the future, complementary service providers such as F&B catering for yacht charters and watersport equipment rental will also be roped in.

The conglomerate was also on location to showcase some of its latest endeavours with a 35-sqm booth, namely marina projects including ONE°15 Marina Puteri Harbour, Malaysia and ONE°15 Marina Makham Bay Phuket, Thailand.

Held from 12 to 15 April at the award-winning ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, the Singapore Yacht Show played host to the largest number of world-class yachts in all of Asia,

including a number of impressive debuts. For four days, the Club was positively brimming

with excitement as visitors took in the grand sight of the latest superyachts docked there. There were 94 yachts, boats and watercrafts on display spanning over 8,400-sqm on both land and water, and a record number of 150 exhibitors participated in this year’s edition.

Just before the offi cial opening ceremony of this year’s edition of SYS, the Asia Pacifi c Superyacht Conference was underway between 10 and 11 April, where leisure marine professionals gain insights into critical market issues as well as important updates on regional government regulations.

Arthur Tay, Jacqueline Tan and Andy Treadwell offi ciated the opening ceremony on 12 April 2018.

The yachts on display was a magnifi cent sight.

The excitment of the SYS went on into the evening with its dazzling showcase.

There were quite a few stunning debuts at this year’s SYS.

The Tesla Model X 75D attracted a lot of attention at the SYS.

Trevor Fong, Arthur Tay, Dr Chong Yok Sin and Thomas Eugene Chia at the signing

ceremony to launch ONE°15 Life.

DELIGHTFUL DEBUTSLovers of all things nautical had plenty to lust after at this year’s SYS as distributors and importers introduced new craft, from luxury to practical.

The cutting-edge Grande 27 Metri, the 2017 winner of the World Yachts Trophies’ “Most Achieved” Trophy in the 80’ to 125’ category was one of the crowd-pleasers at the show. Seen in Asia for the fi rst time, the yacht’s use of carbon fi bre in its construction meant that the volumes and surfaces could be increased while maintaining the same weight without sacrifi cing dynamic stability.

Meanwhile, Asia’s leading yacht dealer, Simpson Marine led its regional premieres with the majestic Beneteau Oceanis 51.1, the fi rst of a new generation featuring a new stepped hull and stylish deck plan. The Beneteau Gran Turismo 50 is the fl agship of a new generation of stylish sport cruisers and the Beneteau Lagoon 40, a new sailing catamaran model in the Lagoon range.

Also making its debut in the region was the sharp Ferretti 780, from the Tai He Ban collection by Hong Seh Marine. Featuring an innovative aerodynamic design with clean shapes and sleek lines, this high-end yacht is aimed at Asian clients who want to add their own customised touches to their vessels. Hong Seh Marine also launched the Boston Whaler 315 Conquest, specially customised for angling enthusiast and weekend cruisers.

FLOATING FUN It wasn’t just yachts and boating fun at the Singapore Yacht Show. Visitors, young and old, had a plethora of activities to keep them on the go all day.

While kids attended creative workshops, their parents had a choice of wine or gin tasting. Visitors had a go at the many demonstrations, from stand-up-paddling, to kayaking, fi shing and boating basics. There was also a wakeboard demo (from a Singapore National Champion, no less), as well as others featuring jet surfi ng and fl y boards.

Over at the Floating Leisure Hub Water, sports enthusiasts got to check out the range of watercraft suitable for diving, fi shing and water sports, and even car enthusiasts were not forgotten. They got a chance to check out the premier cars by Hong Seh: the Tesla Model S 85D and the Tesla Model X 75D, which features falcon wing rear doors. These two cars certainly garnered a lot of attention.

With wellness workshops, fi ne art and even a spot of shopping, there really was something for everyone!

And the accolade of Best Asian Marina Award goes to ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove—for the seventh time.

Best This year, the Asia Boating Awards celebrated its 14th anniversary with a gala and award ceremony at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove’s Constellation Ballroom, a day before the opening of the Singapore Yacht Show. The who’s who in the boating world made their presence felt in Asia’s most prestigious event, all eager to fi nd out who claimed one of the 28 awards that recognised the yacht builders, motor yachts, sailing yachts, regattas, marinas and yacht clubs as well as personalities and charter companies from across the region and around the world. Some of the award categories include Best Asian Yacht Builder, Best Yacht Design Innovation, Best Asian Yacht Club and Best Asian Marina.

Co-organised by Asia-Pacifi c Boating and China Boating magazines, this year’s soiree had more than 100 people on the guest list. The night started with a cocktail reception at 7pm, followed by a sumptuous dinner. Bluinc’s Managing Director (Asia) Foong Seong Khong made a speech, followed by ONE°15 Marina’s General Manager Teo Joo Leng before the commencement of the award ceremony.

To end the evening, guests were invited to the SYS Exhibitor’s Welcome Party at the rooftop, where they also got a chance to meet other Singapore Yacht Show’s exhibitors and industry leaders.

A GLORIOUS PASTIn 1892, Johan Carlsson, owner of a cement factory in Sweden wanted a deep-sea carrier to ply the cold Artic sea. Norwegian Ola H Nerhus Nerhus, a shipbuilder famed for his strong and swift vessels known as ‘Hardanger Jachts’ was commissioned for the job. His masterpiece, Vega, is the only known ‘Hardanger jacht’ with an all-oak keel and steel frame. In 1902, Vega was modifi ed and retrofi tted, and its fame grew as a sea-worthy vessel managed by a small crew.

She may be 125 years old but she has no intention of retiring and is always raring to ride the rough seas in aid of the needy. Meet Vega, the Norwegian-built grand dame that has, together with her crew of volunteers,

borne supplies from countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand to East Timor and remote islands in East Indonesia. In February, the Club extended our warmest welcome and played host to Vega, and a few of our staff went on a guided tour by co-partner and humanitarian Meggi Macoun.

In February, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove hosted Vega and some of our staff had a chance to take a peek into the vessel.

Vega surfaced decades later in Canary Islands when she was discovered by Shane Granger and his partner Meggi Macoun. The couple took four years to clean her up and got her sailing again.

HOPE FOR MANYIn 2004, the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake killed more than 250,000 people in 18 countries in South-east Asia and Southern Africa, and left 1.7million homeless. Granger and Macoun, who were in Langkawi with Vega at that time, immediately volunteered to carry food and medical supplies to Sumatra. It was then that Granger and Macoun realised they could use Vega to help the people in these remote communities.

In other isolated regions, teachers and pupils are often lacking basic items like chalk, paper, pencils and even essentials like shoes. And Vega and her crew ply the waters yearly to bring 20 tons of such educational and medical supplies to far-fl ung places, a collaborative effort between the vessel and Kits-for-Kids foundation. Kits-for-Kids provides resourceful solutions for charities, care agencies,

ON WATER

churches, relief organisations, and schools to ensure the less fortunate have the essential products they require.

Besides school supplies, Vega also supports the efforts of local midwives and village health centres by providing them with medical equipment and supplies, as well as through workshops or training seminars. As a result, the lives of many mothers and their babies have been saved.

Still the humanitarian work for Vega and her crew continues. While these small communities may lead simple lives, they also face issues like waste management and environmental challenges. Team Vega has risen to meet the challenge by creating environmental education programmes, and waste management materials for schools and through increasing community awareness, provide practical solutions that help them. Granger shares that he has seen how the community has thrived: “Over the years we have watched small communities grow and begin to prosper, often thanks to our efforts”. To him, “that in itself, is a rewarding experience”.

However, upkeep of a vessel like Vega is no easy task. She has to be kept in tip-top condition to be sea-worthy and cost is high. As such, Vega depends on a network of friends to provide educational supplies, basic medical needs like antibiotics, vegetable seeds, fi shing or farming items, as well as donations needed to continue the mission. Despite these issues, Granger says: “Maintaining Vega in top condition and our humanitarian mission is a passion. That passion is what drives Meggi and I to try and change the world around us, to make it a better place. Passion is what gets us out of bed every morning anticipating an exciting new future that often catches us by surprise.”

To contribute to Vega’s efforts, fi nd out more at https://www.sailvega.com/

The lives of many people have been greatly improved because of Vega’s support.

Upkeeping a vessel is costly and largely dependent on donations.

One of the things that drew Lim Han Ee to ONE°15 was the easy access to the water. He and his then-fi ancee, Jessica, joined the Club in 2008. “I love the ambience, the

beauty and the setting,” he says. “It’s a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. When you come here, it’s a different vibe.”

They both loved the Club so much that they decided to hold their wedding reception here in October that same year. “It was chill, nice and comfortable. The service and support to get the event set up was great,” he shares. He still has fond memories of a great night where one of the highlights was the food. “We had people fl ying in from all over the world–Canada, Australia and Iceland. Everybody raved about the food.”

Fast forward 10 years later and Han Ee and his family–which now includes seven-year-old Evan and fi ve-year-old Ella–come to enjoy the facilities a couple of times a month. A typical day at the Club for the Lims involves swimming, going to the gym, the arcade, and lots of eating. “The kids love to swim at the pool, and play at the playground and arcade,” Han Ee says.

Personally, Han Ee loves the big, black couches at the lounge that you can “sink into and disconnect from the world.” He tries to hit the gym whenever he can as it’s not super crowded and he loves the view overlooking the pool. “You can have a good workout, have a shower, then have a meal or a drink, without leaving the premises,” he says.

Having been a member for so long, Han Ee has seen the Club through several changes. “It’s interesting because Jessica and I have seen the Club evolve with the different managers, yet it retains

CLUB BUZZ/PROFILE

the same vibe. We still see some recognisable faces around the club, like the waiters and waitresses. They are people that I’ve known for a long time and they’ve seen my children grow up. Coming here is familiar and comfortable,” he shares.

He has close friends who are also Members and a lot of their activities are centred on the club, usually around food. “The lunch specials at LATITUDE Bistro are great and the dinner buffets with the main course are a really good deal. WOK°15 also has amazing food,” he says. Meanwhile, Jessica attends a lot of the evening socials where she gets a chance to meet other Members.

Last year, Han Ee was appointed the CEO of Singapore Sailing Federation (SSF). One of the collaborations between ONE°15 and SSF was the third SB20 Asian Grand Slam & Asia Pacifi c Championships in February, where ONE°15 proudly hosted and SSF provided support in terms of logistics, administration and the running of the race. The next edition will be held from 24 to 27 January 2019.

“This year, by far, was the largest turnout, and it will continue to grow in brand, in name and in size. And the social events hosted by ONE°15 were well received,” says Han Ee “Being in the water is not just about going on a boat. It’s the relationships, the banter, the food, the camaraderie and the experiences. That’s what makes ONE°15 so powerful as a brand.”

One of the highlights of the event was the prize ceremony, which was held at the Club’s Rooftop Terrace. “It was a perfect sunset and you got a great view of the city,” he gushes. “That is exactly the vibe that this whole club imbues – it’s nice, polished and relaxed.”

As a former national windsurfer and naval combat off icer, and current CEO of the Singapore Sailing Federation, it’s natural for Lim Han Ee to want to be close to the water. It’s no surprise then that he’s been a Club Member for 10 years.

CLUB BUZZ/PROFILE

LONGITUDE: Hello Chef! You were recently invited by the People’s Association to head the preparation of four traditional desserts at the CNY Garden Party @ Istana, hosted by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. You even met President Halimah Yacob. That must have been quite an experience.EXECUTIVE CHEF WILLIAM SOH: It certainly was! I wasn’t told that President Halimah would visit, only that a VIP was coming. We interacted for about 25 minutes. I showed her how to make tang yuan (rice balls) and explained the signifi cance of the dish for Chinese New Year. She then attempted to make it herself. Finally, she tried one that I’d made earlier. She loved it. She even posted about the event on Facebook. It was a proud moment for me–a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’m very fortunate.

It seems you were even recognised by several ONE°15 Members at the event.Yes, there were some Members on the VIP guest list and they were surprised to see me. I got the chance to engage with them and I asked them what they would like to see more of at the Club.

You’ve introduced innovative new concepts, such as the Spanish buffet and Heritage buffet, since you came on board in May 2017. How do you come up with new ideas? It’s important to understand what our Members need. I concentrate a lot on Members’ requests and what is on trend. You have to know what people are looking for. You have to have a good balance of local and international food. I also made the buffet line longer and added more value items.

What are you some of your responsibilities as Executive Chef? I take care of the daily operations for all the F&B service and I oversee about 40 staff. We look after the LATITUDE Bistro, WOK°15, banquets, catering services for the yachts and charters, as well as wedding functions and special Member events.

What do you do on a day-to-day basis? The fi rst thing I do is check my email when I get to work at around 6am. Then I make the rounds. I check the breakfast quality, the fridges to see what is not utilised, the hygiene and sanitation of the work area. I will also check to see if there are any special events for the day. In between the meal services, I attend meetings and do my paperwork.

There are two Cook Up a Storm events coming up. Do tell us about your involvement with that. The fi rst event is a cooking class that we’re holding on 12 May. It’s an opportunity for mothers to bond with their children as they learn to cook together. I will demonstrate how to make two dishes, then the participants will replicate them. I will then judge the best dishes and the winning team will get a prize. The best part is, they can bring the experience home to try out in their own kitchen. We hope to inspire kids to cook for their mothers during special occasions. The second event on 24 June is for junior cooks, where the participants will learn how to garnish a dessert.

What excites you when you think of your job?I always ask myself, what can I do better than yesterday? For example, if I made char kway teow yesterday, I will make it better today. I’ve been making char kway teow for over 18 years, but there’s always room for improvement.

AS PART OF ONEº15 Marina Sentosa Cove’s eco-initiatives and dedication to conserve our marine biodiversity, more than 100 people participated in the Eco Dive on 11 March. This operation was also a prelude to the coral reef planting exercise happening in September 2018.

ONE°15 GM Teo Joo Leng said: “As a friend to the sea, ONE°15 Marina aims to develop a thriving ecosystem in our marina and has been actively promoting sound environmental stewardship. The goal of this exercise is to groom the superyacht area for our coral reef planting exercise in September. Eventually, we hope to open up areas of the marina for the public to dive, snorkel, and learn about marine biodiversity.”

The Marina’s commitment and effort to protect the biodiversity of marine life and the ecosystem in the Marina has earn itself several accolades

over the years. For example, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove is the fi rst marina in the region to achieve ISO 14001, a prestigious and internationally-recognised certifi cation for Environmental Management. It also won the Green Maritime Company of the Year at the Asia Boating Awards 2015, an award that recognises leisure marina businesses in Asia that have contributed to the protection of its environment. Other notable recognitions: We are the fi rst Level 4 Clean Marina to achieve this recognition in South East Asia, plus we were accreditated as a “Fish Friendly Marina” by the Marina Industries Association (MIA) in 2016.

Recognitions like these spur us on to do better and more for the environment. As one of Asia’s fi nest yacht clubs, we are glad to do our part with the Eco Dive initiative. This year’s effort turned up a staggering 200kg

ON 4 MARCH, more than 150 people gathered at ONE°15 for a day of exhilarating activities. This year, the Seasports Extravaganza was upsized to include seven hours of unlimited access to kayaking, stand-up paddling, fl oating on giant water infl atables, fl ying and splashing into the water blobs. While jet-skiing and jet-surfi ng were two of the most sought-after activities that day, the Water-Blob— giant infl atable that provided adrenaline-pumping action with a three-metre water tower—was also a crowd-pleaser. Passersby even stopped to take videos of the participants’ spectacular splashdowns.

Over at the Water Mat Challenge, contenders gathered at Boaters’ Bar to put their balancing skills to the test and the winners walked away with prizes such as $100 LATITUDE Bistro dining vouchers and a one-hour Segway rental vouchers worth $79.80 a pair.

Elsewhere, guests took leisurely boat rides to Lazarus Island where they also had a chance to enjoy towable rides such as the banana boat.

Besides the host of entertaining activities that day, attendees also had a chance to fi nd out more about our yacht chartering service from our colleagues.

The exciting day culminated in a lucky draw where the top prizes included a one-night stay at ONE°15 Marina’s Hill View Room worth $300 and a Segway One S2 worth $1,099.

With hundreds of fl avour compounds from ageing in oak barrels, whisky is a matter of taste, not gender. But for decades, the remnants of

the “old boys’ club” and the “bourbon summit” mentality broadly made alcohol consumption the province of men—outside of the home, that is. Scottish whisky, with its trappings of power and elitism, served to enforce the social status quo, despite a long history of women as distillers and owners.

“There have always been women who enjoyed whisky—my grandmother was a whisky drinker for many years—but there was undeniably a stereotype that whisky was more for men,” notes Matthew Fergusson-Stewart, Glenfi ddich’s regional brand ambassador for the Asia-Pacifi c region who is based in Singapore. “Ten years ago when I started running whisky tastings, my audience would have been 80 per cent middle-aged men,” he says. “Today, my audiences tend to be much younger—and around a third of them are women. I’m quite confi dent that this will continue.”

While local statistics are diffi cult to come by, Mathieu Musnier, the general manager of importer-distributor La Maison du Whisky, sees the times changing. “We have been in Singapore for 12 years now,” he shares. “When we fi rst started our retail front, whisky patrons were mostly gentlemen. Now, we see a growing number of female patrons, especially at our bar, Maison du Whisky.” More tellingly, when the company inaugurated Whisky Live Singapore in 2010, only a handful of female guests attended the event. “Over the years, we have seen double-digit growth in female attendees at Whisky Live Singapore. Last year, we saw the largest number of women—we estimate 25 to 30 per cent of guests,” he adds.

A NOSE FOR COMPLEXITYFrom a recent whisky sale, Diageo Singapore found that roughly 30 per cent of those in attendance were women, and among this sample, 35 per cent of them drank whisky at home at least once a month. Notes bartender extraordinaire

Aubrey Sim, now the reserve brand ambassador for Diageo Southeast Asia, says: “It’s not so much about a particular fl avour profi le that women are gravitating towards nowadays. Women today are very much more adventurous about making their preferences known, and we see that in their career and lifestyle choices.”

As more innovative and experimental styles of whisky are released, there are more nuances to discover in each dram—and this has always been a strong point. “Women generally have a more discerning nose than their counterparts,” says Musnier. “The exciting part about whisky is that no two whiskies are exactly the same. The exploration intrigues.”

Adds Fergusson-Stewart: “There’s a stereotype that women will prefer a more delicate whisky, like a Lowland single malt or an Irish whiskey, and that men will prefer something much bolder, like the peaty Islay style. Frankly, I think this is nonsense—and the condescension that comes with this assumption is a large part of what historically led women to avoid whisky.”

He also believes that women have greater olfactory powers than men, and one of the best female focused events William Grant and Sons had designed was a series of sensory workshops in Singapore and Malaysia for The Balvenie, for which its brand ambassador Neil Strachan worked with a perfumer to explore concepts around nosing and tasting.

WOMEN WITH TASTEThe wise and witty Patricia Britton, who runs wine and spirits store Le Vigne with her husband, Lewis Mitchell, remembers what it was like before the current whisky renaissance. “When I fi rst started out in the spirits industry in the 1990s [gasps], women drinking whiskies was very rare—perhaps a whisky and soda or a whisky and Coke,” she tells. “These days, it’s fantastic to see the ladies enjoying their whiskies neat or on the rocks, and appreciating the myriad choices out there. I have certainly seen an increase in ladies who purchase whiskies for themselves.” But Britton has no plans to formally organise women-only events. “I enjoy speaking and selling to couples who appreciate each other’s selections or taste,” she says with a smile.

Trudy Tan, a certifi ed public accountant and whisky connoisseur who discovered the beverage in 2008, has seen her passion grow in leaps and

The complexity of whisky and the experience from nose to taste are unlike any other spirit.

There are more women drinking whisky now

and many of them even travel around the world to expand their knowledge.

bounds. “Initially, I drank The Macallan 12 Year Old with a little water and ice, but I gradually started to take a real interest in the drink. When I tried whiskies from different distilleries with unique fl avours and expressions, drinking it neat became the only way I knew to enjoy my dram.”

She’s also made it a point to travel to Japan every year to expand her knowledge on whisky. “My favourites are Bar Kitchen and Whisky Bar Leichhardt in Fukuoka, and Zoetrope in Tokyo.”

Tan concedes that some of her friends still aren’t into whisky due to the high alcohol content, but she believes that they just haven’t found the profi le that suits them. Her eclectic choice sips include Caol Ila 25 Year Old, Craigellachie 31 Year Old and Nikka Single Cask Malt 20 Year Old. But if money was no object, she would be stocking up on sherry cask whisky from the Karuizawa distillery and the BenRiach Single Cask Bottling 1976 release for Shinanoya Tokyo.

For Elaine Seah, the founder-director of public relations fi rm Brand Incorporated, love and whisky came hand in hand while attending a wedding in

Perth. “My fi rst taste of single malt was with Matthew [Fergusson-Stewart]. He offered me a taste of Talisker 18 Year Old and a romance,” she recounts gleefully. “The complexity of whisky and the experience from nose to taste are unlike any other spirit. I can pick up aromas quite quickly, but it’s the reconciliation of the nose and taste that intrigues me. I thoroughly enjoy the aspect of drinking and pairing—especially how certain ingredients enhance the taste, like umami and sherry-cask whisky.”

While she is partial to Scotch single malt, she was taken with a 31-year-old blended whisky made by Euan Shand for their wedding. The couple have a fi ve-year-old daughter named Islay (but of course) and Elaine quips, “Whisky will always be my husband’s mistress, but it was also whisky that brought us together.”

AMANYANGYUNShanghai, China

If time is the ultimate luxury, then Amanyangyun—an ambitious undertaking spanning 15 years—is the epitome of it. The brand’s fourth hotel in China opened in January, marking a great start to Aman’s 30th anniversary celebrations in 2018. The landmark property is essentially a living museum, the result of decade-long conservation work of Chinese entrepreneur Ma Dadong and Aman. Both parties embarked on a large scale preservation project: transporting and replanting 10,000 camphor trees, which now serve as the setting of the 10-hectare hotel, as well as dismantling then rebuilding antique houses on the site. Accommodation is in the form of these meticulously restored historic homes reimagined by Aman’s frequent collaborator, Kerry Hill Architects. In a sense, Amanyangyun (whose name means “cloud forest”) does not just aim to preserve history but create it. aman.com/resorts/amanyangyun

THE MURRAYHong Kong

In the crowded skyline of Hong Kong, it can be hard to stand out. But the building that houses The Murray, a Niccolo Hotel, has made its mark just by being one of the few to escape demolition. Built in 1969, the iconic structure was given a new lease of life by acclaimed architecture and design studio, Foster + Partners, responsible for transforming the former government building into a luxury hotel. The resulting design makes the most of its prime location on Cotton Tree Drive: parking lots were readapted to become street-level dining spaces fi lled with

amazing natural light, while the offi ces were cleverly repositioned as the hotel’s 336 spacious suites, with a view of either Victoria Harbour or the soothing botanical gardens. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the rooftop, which is now a bar and restaurant called Popinjays. Soaring 25 fl oors above Hong Kong, it is high enough to offer a spectacular panorama but also bathes in the glow of the equally emblematic buildings surrounding it, such as IM Pei’s masterpiece nearby. marcopolohotels.com/en/niccolo/hotels/hongkong/central/the_murray/

HOSHINOYA TOKYOTokyo, Japan

There’s no shortage of international luxury hotels in Tokyo but none of them can rival the authenticity of home-grown brand, Hoshinoya. Located in the fi nancial district of Otemachi, their fi rst property in the Japanese capital is the ultimate urban retreat and recognised as the city’s premier modern ryokan (Japanese inn). Designed by Azuma Architects & Associates, the clean-lined, minimalist aesthetic still exudes the warmth of a family-run enterprise; this is complemented by sculptural outdoor landscaping by Hiroki Hasegawa. Although Hoshinoya modernised the concept of the

ryokan, some traditions remain: go past the latticed façade and you’re welcomed home in typical style. Guests have to remove their shoes before walking through the tatami fl ooring, which spans the hotel’s 17 fl oors. Like any true ryokan, it also houses a proper onsen. This one hard to beat—located on the top fl oor and open to the elements, it’s just the place to soak in serenity in this chaotic city. hoshinoya.com/tokyo/en/
