Dear Stella Community

Why Choose a Girls’ School?

Research shows that girls’ schools create great opportunities for young women to lead and these schools also offer incentives to girls to focus and work collaboratively. ‘Girls in single sex schools perform better academically than their counterparts in co-educational schools, after holding constant measures of selection, background, peers and school factors’ (Cabezas, 2010 as cited in The Alliance of Girls’ Schools: Why a Girls’ School? flyer 2015). At Stella Maris we value the culture that an all girls’ school provides offering a balance between competition and collaboration. I recently asked one of our current Year 11 students what it was she valued about coming to Stella and her reply was that the girls at Stella are so friendly, don’t work as cliques and that it really is such a good place to be.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Isabella Gilbert (HSC 2014) who was presented with a certificate last Friday recognizing her as one of only 20 students in the state whose design projects were chosen for DesignTECH at the Powerhouse Museum. The BOSTES representatives were keen to say that student projects in Design and Technology today are most responsive to the needs of the community. Isabella’s project was a teaching aid for Advanced Mathematics. Other projects included a portable bus sign, a swimming aid, a fashion-sleeve for amputees and a tool to spool barbed wire. Congratulations to Isabella and also to her teacher, Ben Waters, who has worked with Isabella over two years assisting her to develop her Design and Technology skills.

Swimming Carnival

Our Swimming Carnival was a fantastic day. A cool start to the day meant that things were calm and relaxed as we arrived at North Sydney Pool. Who would have thought we would have our carnival under the Harbour Bridge? A great day was had with so many students involved in championship and non-competitive races. The cheering was

amazing and Bashir won the House Chant by a whisker. Egan has a great swimming contingent and this was evident in the great overall win they had this year. I wish to express my thanks to the PDPHE staff who organised a great day for the girls. It was wonderful to see the level of engagement from the students, with many taking part in the day’s events.

Transport to and from school

We remind parents and carers that our preferred mode of transport to school for the girls is public transport. There is no kiss and drop zone at Stella Maris or suitable parking around the school. This week I have had complaints from the neighbors about the impact on their amenity and their safety. I would request that parents/carers find some alternative other than double parking or pulling into residents’ driveways. We need to ensure that we follow the road rules at all times.

Family Assistance

The 2014-2015 Family Energy Rebate is now available for those who are eligible. With the application submission deadline fast approaching, I urge families that might be able to benefit from the rebate (up to $150.00) to access this government support. The application submission deadline is Midnight 16 June 2015. Prayer

Jesus entered the temple to remind the people that the sacred space of the sanctuary needed to be reclaimed. In our year of stewardship we need to remember that we carry our sacred spaces with us in our lives. When we reflect on the beautiful sanctuary that our school is we need to understand that the college is a place where all are safe.

Dear Jesus I can open up my heart to you I can tell you everything that troubles me I know You care about all the concerns in my life Teach me to live in the knowledge That You who care for me today Will care for me tomorrow and all the days of my life. Amen.

S C H O O L S C L E A N U P DAY 2 0 1 5

Stella participates in the Schools Clean Up Day 2015

This year was a huge year for Clean Up Australia, with more than 434,588 students from over 2,324 schools Australia-wide taking part in the event.

Alongside these students, last Friday afternoon, almost 1000 girls from our College were involved in picking up rubbish. This took place on both the campuses, many of our surround streets, Keirle Park, Manly Lagoon and the beachfront. The good spirit and enthusiasm of the girls was infectious and we collected a lot more rubbish than we anticipated...what an amazing effort!

This is a wonderful way to ‘kick start’ our year of Stewardship, one of our core Benedictine values.

Thank you so much to all of our wonderful girls and teachers who really did demonstrate that “many hands do make light work”!

Sally Hunt, Head of HSIE

Benedictine Day was a really great day with fun activities. I Iearnt a lot more than what I used to know about Saint Benedict. The activity I liked most about the day was when we all got to relax and meditate - learning to listen with the ear of our hearts. In the end it was a really fun day and I hope we next year’s Year 7s enjoy it as much as I did. Bailey Reimer

Benedictine Day was sure a day to remember. We all learnt about St Benedict and the values of Stella Maris. It was lots of fun and we all had a great time. We all listened and learned as much as we could. We now know more about Stella Maris and its history and I’m sure we are all very proud to be Stella girls. Rebecca Collins Benedictine Day was very enjoyable as I learnt a lot of new things about St Benedict, It was very educational and I feel like I fit in more knowing about my school’s history. The teachers were lovely and made the day very fun. I really liked the meditation because it was relaxing and was something different. Benedictine Day was a great experience and was very helpful to understand the values and ways of our school. Summer Pittar

YEAR 7 AT ‘SURF SURVIVAL DAY’

On Friday 20 February Year 7 participated in a ‘Surf Survival’ course at Manly and Shelly Beach. Although the day started well, late morning the shark alarm went off which meant the water activities were over for the day. This did not stop the girls from having fun. They embraced the beach games with as much enthusiasm as they had for the surf drills. I would like to congratulate the Year 7 students for their excellent behavior and participation on the day. Here are some accounts from the day:

On Friday 20th Year 7 had our really fun Surf Survival day. We started the day in the theatre learning all about the beach and how to survive being in a rip. We then headed off to Shelly beach to work on some basic water skills. On the way back to Manly to do some board skills we heard something different, it was a shark alarm!!! The shark was supposedly over 7 foot!!! We were all a bit disappointed that we couldn’t go on the boards but the disappointment soon left when we found out that we would be playing flags and running games on the beach. It was an exciting and fun experience and I wish we could do it again. Bianca Beck

The day started with a talk in the theatre with one of the instructors. He taught us about safety in rips and what we would be doing. The year was split into groups to be at Manly beach or Shelly beach. I went off the Shelly beach to do a 200m swim. It was REALLY cold but you got used to it as you swam along. After we had all done the swim we did a little bit of safety in the water, such as what do to if you get stuck in a rip,. We floated and learnt how to tread water. As we just got back to Manly beach to do the next activity. The shark alarm went off! And that was the end of all the swimming and board activities! We spent the rest of the day doing beach games like flags and relays. Rebecca Mackenzie

Surf Survival was really enjoyable! We learnt a lot of new things (one of them being how to evacuate the water when a shark came… this was not a drill.)

We started off with a slide show about rips, informing me to NEVER swim where the waves don’t crash (I always used to, but little did I know it was a rip I was enjoying my swim in) and a whole lot of important tips on how to get out of a rip. We were pushed to our limits swimming 200 (felt like 2000) metres out to sea from Shelly Beach. We did some treading water, floating and races! Next thing you know it, we are escaping the water from a seven-foot bull shark! This was a rush of adrenaline! The rest of the day was spent playing Flags, the nippers game, and relays. Overall, my Surf Survival experience was definitely one to remember. Carmen Bartolo

Cath Douglas, Head of PDHPE

SWIMMING CARNIVAL The 2015 Stella Swimming Carnival was a great success! North Sydney pool was the perfect venue for the day. It was great to see all of the Stella girls swimming and cheering under the Harbour Bridge. The participation of all students was fantastic. We had so many students lining up to swim in all races. The House spirit and cheering was amazing. All of the teachers and students had a fun and memorable day. There were some outstanding results in the pool. Well done to our age champions: 12 years: Analiese Melbourn 13 years: Athena Liang 14years: Skye Nankervis and Vicki Cuthbert 15 years: Naomi Scott 16 years: Hannah Baldwin 17 years: Caitlin Werakso Congratulations also goes to Hannah Baldwin (Year 10) who won the prestigious fastest 50m freestyle event. Naomi Scott was 2nd in this event, with Skye Nankervis 3rd. The cheering competition was won by Bashir. Congratulations to Egan who won the Carnival. The participation from all of the students in Egan was fantastic, which helped them to win the shield. The overall placings were: 1ST: Egan 2nd: Mackillop 3rd: Bashir 4th: Smith 5th: Wood 6th: Noonuccal 7th: Shinnick 8th: Chisolm The swimming team and details of broken records will be in next week’s Newsletter. Congratulations to everyone on a fantastic day!

We are very aware of the contamination threat to Nanna’s Berries. We have returned any stock we had in the freezer and are now using some we purchased from Manly Freezers. They supply the Berryman range but some of those are processed in China or Chile. We have found that the mangoes are the only frozen fruit grown and processed in Australia so until the threat is over, mango smoothies will be the only choice in the Canteen. We are also adding fresh fruit when we have it, e.g. watermelon, rockmelon or strawberries. PARKING RESTRICTIONS Please note parking time limitations: 2 hours around the school 5 hours (9.30-2.30) in the bus zone 4 hours at Keirle Park Unrestricted (Warringah Council):

Up steps near Queenscliff Beach near SPLAT coffee shop SAFETY NOTICE For students safety, the Canteen will only provide boiling water for noodles to students who either buy the Fantastic Noodles from the Canteen or bring from home the 70g ‘Fantastic Noodles’ or ‘Simplee’ (available from ALDI). These containers are more sturdy than others, can withstand the boiling water and are not too flimsy to hold.

Students are not to lend their card to others. Card owners

must be in attendance if students want to buy for others. Each student should have only ONE card. Old cards will not

be served. Replacement cards cost $5. Defaced cards will need to be

replaced. Please check your daughter’s My Student Account to ensure

she has sufficient funds to purchase items. The International College of Management are having their Agents and

Advisors Dinner on the 20 March. This is one of their larger evenings at

the College and have asked if we again can provide music for the

beginning of the evening. (5.45—6.45 pm)

The theme (both in dress and in music) for the evening is 1950’s /Grease.

Vocalists and instrumentalists are welcome. Please keep in mind that being

a public performance the quality will need to be of a high standard and

places are limited.

If you are interested in performing, please reply back to me with the title of your piece/s by Monday 9 March by 3.20 pm (please note

that these are expressions of interest at this time and the performers chosen will be notified by email.

These are great opportunities to polish your performance skills and have a lot of fun, as those who have done it before can attest.
