This is fortunate as it has given the country time to prepare and to establish both containment measures and mitigation strategies. I was part of a webinar this week run by CSNSW and was briefed by the NSW Health Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, who indicated that the virus will spread but if we test and quarantine people likely to be affected, we will be able to manage the virus. The College continues to provide information to the girls about keeping themselves safe from viruses through good hand hygiene and asks parents and carers to continue to source information regarding the virus from reputable spokespersons. Mini-recycling station in the LibraryStella Maris College is a member of the 'Cartridges 4 Planet Ark', Mobile Musters and Battery World programs.

To help you make your home a little greener, you are invited to bring your used printer cartridges, old mobile phones, and used batteries from home, and drop them into our recycling boxes. The boxes are located in the library entrance.

Why is recycling mobile phones important? Mobile phones contain minerals such as gold, cobalt, tungsten, tin, and coltan. Mining for these minerals in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo drives illegal bush meat hunting, destroys crucial chimpanzee and gorilla habitat, and has been the cause of human conflict.

However, 99% of materials can be recovered when mobile devices are recycled.

Thank you Stella families, as of 10 March, 2020; you have recycled 360 batteries, 12 mobile phones and one printer cartridge.

Careers

Please click here for more Careers informationJeanette Ferguson, Careers Advisor

NEW STELLA MARIS CAREERS WEBSITEStella Maris College has now provided its students and their parents/caregivers with a ‘School Careers Website’.

You can find it at https://www.stellacareers.com/

It’s a “One Stop Shop” for Career Planning, information, Senior School, Post School Options and much more. Once registered in the Student's Secure Area (please use school email address) under the tab FOR STUDENTS on the main home page of the site.

Years 10 to 12 can currently use it to create and save their resume, write cover letters and develop e-portfolios. Junior students will also be able to explore the site and register to gain access to other features.

Additionally, under the Important Information tab there is a very detailed Calendar of Events (university, defence force and college open days, exchange programs and gap year information sessions), as well as a comprehensive Careers Newsletter, which will eventually replace this section of the regular Stella Maris Newsletter.

Please be encouraged to explore our new site no matter what year you are in or what your hopes for the future after secondary school may be.

The site is also designed with the parent/caregiver in mind, to provide all the information you need about your child’s Career Planning and post school options, as the information is constantly changing in these areas.

Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Clemesha (VET) and Mrs Barbetti are very excited about the benefits of what is on offer at https://www.stellacareers.com/ and are looking forward to assisting the Stella Maris school community in getting the most out of it.
