STEC APPLAUDS COLLABORATIVE EFFORT IN WAR AGAINST AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES
Assemblyman Dan Stec (R,C,I-Queensbury) today applauded the efforts of North Country stakeholders for their collaboration in a large agreement to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species. Stec reiterated the importance of this issue to his district, which covers four counties and stretches into the Adirondacks, and pledged his full support for the initiative. He also affirmed his efforts to acquire funding during this year’s budget negotiations.
“I am proud of the efforts of my regional colleagues and the local government leaders from around my district,” Stec said. “The North Country’s economy is based in large part on tourism from our many lakes and a healthy and flourishing environment. Our large collaboration, along with proper funding in this year’s enacted budget, has the potential to propel us light years ahead in combating this issue. The spread of invasive aquatic species has long been an issue in upstate New York and I am glad to see that so many groups and individuals are on board. I pledge my continued support of mitigating this problem and will surely advocate on its behalf in the Assembly.”
Stec’s comments come after Gov. Cuomo recently announced an unprecedented agreement involving 53 New York State Agencies, local governments, environmental protection groups and others. The governor’s proposed Executive Budget includes an increase of $1 million to the Environmental Protection Fund to help fight invasive species. Clean, drain and dry standards for boats and trailer inspection and decontamination will be used to mitigate the spread of certain species from entering area waterways.
