NEW YORK

No lead is safe in the NFL this year, especially if a bad team is holding it against a good team. Sunday’s rally by the Ravens (the good team) to beat the Cardinals (the bad team) is proof.

It also was the fifth time this season someone has come back from 20 or more points down to win. That’s already a league record with nine weeks remaining on the schedule.

The Ravens were well aware that big comebacks have been almost routine in 2011, so even while trailing 24-3 they never lost faith.

Nor should they have consid-ering the Cardinals have one of the worst pass defenses in football and are one of the leaders in turn-ing over the ball.

“You’re going to keep fighting,” coach John Harbaugh said of the Ravens’ attitude at halftime. “If you watch around this league, you can come back and win.”

Just as the Lions did against the Cowboys and the 49ers did at Philadelphia on Oct. 2. Detroit trailed by 24 points in the third quarter and San Francisco was behind by 20 in the second half against the Eagles.

And just as the Bills stormed back from 21-0 behind at home to beat New England the previous Sunday, the same day the Lions staged their first humongous rally, overcoming a 20-0 halftime hole at Minnesota.

In nearly every case, the team overcoming the lead was play-ing an opponent with a weak or struggling defense. Plus, the ral-lying side was comfortable with a no-huddle offense.

The penchant for coming back from big deficits has much to do with the rules favoring offenses nowadays. Teams are unafraid to throw because of how the game has opened up. There are so many restrictions on defensive backs and linebackers in pass coverage that the old Woody Hayes stand-by that when you throw, three things can happen and two of them are bad no longer applies.

ENGLEWOOD

Tim Tebow wasn’t sacked Monday.

One day after giving his embat-tled young quarterback a less than ringing endorsement fol-lowing a humiliating 45-10 loss at home to the Lions, Broncos coach John Fox said he’s sticking with Tebow.

“For this week, yes,” Fox said.Tebow said he doesn’t feel as

though he’s on a week-to-week basis, but that he’s not one to fret about the future anyway.

“It’s just take it one day at a time, consistently trying to get better and not focusing too far in the future,” Tebow told The Associated Press. “Today’s the day I’ve got to improve and that’s kind of the focus.”

By not committing to him beyond Sunday’s game at Oak-land, Fox made it clear that Tebow has to quickly improve as a pocket passer to retain his starting status in Denver.

“I think at the end of the day, we’ve got to see if he can improve and get better in the pass-ing game,” Fox said.

Since supplanting Kyle Orton at halftime against San Diego on Oct. 9, Tebow has completed 46 percent of his passes (35 for 76) and been sacked 13 times.

“I think we definitely need to improve. I think we will,” Tebow said. “Just the timing and getting in and out of the right plays and being more consistent. ... Every day I’m just coming in here and trying to get better and improving and whatever they ask I’m going to do.”

Tebow, who pulled out a stun-ning win at Miami two weeks ago in his first start this season despite playing poorly for most of the game, said he feels as though the coaching staff still has his back.

“I think they have confidence in me, but more than anything, I’ve got to have confidence in myself and my teammates around me and at the end of the day that’s what matters,” Tebow said.

He insisted his confidence wasn’t rattled by the Lions’ land-slide.

“We did some good things and improved on some things,” Tebow suggested. “It wasn’t all bad, it just didn’t necessarily look that way. But that’s the thing about it, it’s never as bad as it seems, it’s never as good as it seems.”

The Broncos had eight posses-sions of three plays or fewer Sun-day, turned it over once on downs

and three times on takeaways, two of which were returned for touch-downs. Tebow was sacked seven times and his only touchdown toss came after the Lions had built a 42-point lead while razzing him with imitations of his prayer-ful pose that’s become an online sensation.

“We knew he was a scrambling quarterback,” Lions linebacker

Stephen Tulloch said. “We knew he was going to try to get out of the pocket and try to keep plays alive and we did a good job just executing. He’s a young player. He’s got a lot to learn as a play-er. Take nothing from him, he’s a winner, he finds a way to win. He just needs to clean up some things in his pass game, but that takes time.”

Coach John Fox says he’s sticking with quarterback

KANSAS CITY, MO.

Ryan Succop kicked the Kan-sas City Chiefs into the history books.

Philip Rivers will be quite the footnote.

Succop knocked through a 30-yard field goal in over-time Monday night, giving the Chiefs a 23-20 win against the San Diego Chargers and mov-ing them into an improbable tie atop the AFC West.

Kansas City became the first team in NFL history to lose its first three games and share at least part of a division lead after four more games. The Chiefs are also the first team since the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2000 to win four straight games after losing their first three.

Rivers could have prevented all of it from happening.

The Chargers had trailed the whole way before the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback marched them downfield in the closing minutes of regulation. With first-and-10 at the 15 and just 48 seconds on the clock, Riv-ers fumbled the snap and the Chiefs’ Andy Studebaker clawed under the pile and retrieved the ball.

Kansas City moved down the field for its own chance to win in regulation, but Matt Cassel overthrew his intended receiver and Eric Weddle’s second inter-

ception sent the game to over-time.

The Chargers won the toss but failed to pick up a first down, and Cassel calmly led Kansas City right down field. Succop’s field goal with 5:16 left gave the Chiefs (4-3) their fourth straight win and moved them into a tie with San Diego (4-3)

and the idle Oakland Raiders (4-3) in the division.

Kansas City got off to an abysmal start this season, losing its first two games by a combined 89-10 and then dropping its third game on the road, at San Diego. Along the way, the Chiefs lost Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles, safety Eric Berry and

tight end Tony Moeaki to sea-son-ending injuries.

They started moving in the right direction against division doormats Minnesota and Indi-anapolis, and then romped to a 28-0 win against Oakland last week.

Now, they are tied for the lead in the AFC West.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Two weeks, two races and two very contrasting versions of NASCAR.

The response to NASCAR’s last two races, at Talladega and Martinsville, couldn’t be more contradictory.

Talladega, fans screamed, was horrible! The two-car tan-dem racing stunk up one of the most anticipated races of the year, and seasoned superspeed-way fans blamed a clunker of a car and a no-good rules package for ruining their beloved race.

All was right in the NAS-CAR world a week later, though. Why? Because Martinsville was mayhem from the drop of the green flag.

Sunday’s race was marred by a season-high 18 cautions for a season-high 108 caution laps, making for a sloppy, choppy race that struggled to find any rhythm. Hey, look, there’s Brian Vickers causing a wreck! Oh,

no, Carl Edwards is a lap down! Wait, now he’s back on the lead lap! Was that Vickers, again?

On and on it went, almost four hours, until, finally, Tony Stewart used a powerful pass on the outside of Jimmie John-son to win his third race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup cham-pionship. Great finish, popular winner and a topsy-turvy cham-pionship race.

But was it a good race? Dale Earnhardt Jr. said it

was. “I think this was a great day

for NASCAR, and I think this kind of racing is exciting and people really yearn to see that style of racing,” he said. “Please, build some more short tracks, we need some more short tracks. All these 1.5-mile tracks. I know you can get more seats or what-ever but they just don’t really turn everybody on, you know? So I think this was a good day for NASCAR.”

Martinsville praised despite 18 wrecks
