USING WEB 2.0 TECHNOLOGIES - PROFILING & TAGGING TO CONNECT INSTRUCTORS WITH TEACHING RESOURCES.

Graham Glynn, Stony Brook University CenterRichard Von Rauchhaupt, Stony Brook University Center

Presenters

The Challenge: Stony Brook's Teaching, Learning + Technology department has 37 full time staff, a web site with over 500 pages, lists of workshops and external web sites, and an extensive library of books, periodical and faculty interviews on teaching and learning. This makes it challenging for instructors to nd the information and resources they need to improve their teaching. Standard search and navigation techniques fail toeasily connect instructors with these resources. In addition, we know that faculty value advice and assistance from peers who have been there and done that and realized that there was a need to provide a mechanism for networking faculty across the University.Goals: To develop a list of appropriate and relevant topics on teaching and learning to use as universal tags for resources, a mechanism to apply the universal tags in a cohesive way to resources throughout the site and organization, a single web page that combines multiple resources for a given topic into a simple and intuitive interface, a mechanism that connectsfaculty and staff experienced in teaching and technology, with faculty seeking this knowledge by enabling them to declare by topic their interests, expertise and willingness to help others.Solution: Microsoft Ofce SharePoint Server (MOSS 2007), which has builtin web 2.0 data gathering and display capabilities was used as the foundation platform for development. A site column, which contains a dataset that can be shared across sub-sites and lists were used to contain the universal tags. Lists were developed of staff expertise, web page content, library books and journals, workshops, faculty interviews, and external websites. Each item in each list was then assigned a subset of tags from the site column. An ASP.Net custom control was developed to query each of the lists and display the topic ltered set of resources on a single web page.An additional control was used to display each tag, hyperlinked to its resultpage, within each list and on each web content page. An additional list wascreated for gathering faculty interests and strengths in teaching and learning based on the universal tags, along with demographic data, teaching philosophy, awards, and pedagogical publications. This list was used to display the faculty members name and departmental afliation on the results page if s/he had strength in the topic of interest. The approach has resulted in a unique meld of tag and knowledge clouds resulting in a much more effective and simplied mechanism for instructors to nd all theresources associated with a topic of interest.

CASE STUDY: MIGRATION FROM TDM TO SIP TRUNKS

Steve Clark, Suffolk County Community CollegeEirc Litvak, Verizon Business

Presenters

In today!s technology world the buzz is about redundancy, with the expectation to keep all services running all of the time. Multiple Peak Periods add confusion as to how and when to address high capacity needsso that no one hears a busy signal. Suffolk County Community College hadinvested in an infrastructure to provide redundancy for its 5 campuses. When faced with a PRI outage on a campus - outbound calls could be directed through another campus but inbound calls from the PSTN were lost. Recognizing the problem as a limitation of the PSTN, SCCC along witha partnership with Verizon was able to implement SIP trunking and resolvethe limitations of the PSTN. The high capacity SIP circuits support burstingand resource sharing thus eliminating capacity issues during peak times. This session will present SIP Trunk technology and the implementation of going from a PRI PSTN environment to Ethernet-based SIP Trunks.

NETWORK VISUALIZATION

Bill Kramp, Finger Lakes Community CollegePresenters

Demonstration and description of various technologies to visualize networkand server activity. Network devices and servers can create important information that is useful for diagnosing problems, and provide early warning signs of possible failures. Manually viewing thousands of log messages can be very difcult, and important clues can be buried in the chaff. Commercial and open source tools can be used to visualize your network and server activity with both graphs and charts. The presentation will show different ways of displaying network trafc ows,as well as monitor latency between devices and sites. Having a historical record of the latency and bandwidth usage for critical services can be a useful tool when users report problems. These graphs can help reduce thetime required to isolate the cause of the problem, and provide visual images for the reports. This presentation will also demonstrate the capability of open source graphing tools to visualize rewall and server logs, as well as create diagrams from network connection spreadsheets. While there won!t be time to cover all of the details in implementing tools tovisualize your network and server infrastructure, the session should providesome insight into the tools and methods available to do it.

Who can help you sort throughthe choices? Will you be ready to acquire and support this technology? How do you store all the content and how is it accessed? What tools are best for your campus? Oh and by the way, what does it cost? Whether youare an experienced rich media user or just kicking tires, you'll want to spendtime with colleagues at this facilitated round-table discussion. TECHNOLOGY ROAD MAP

Timothy Kraft, Gt Gith LLCPresenters

We can all agree that Information Technology (IT) is being challenged to "Do more with less". The development of a Technology Road Map (TRM) helps achieve this by providing direction and structure while planning for the future. We will discuss how business objectives push technology decisions and therein become the drivers for strategic and tactical directions for the delivery of services. TRM is an iterative process that identies and resolves competing technology priorities and facilitates budgetary planning. TRM also provides structure to this environment by assisting Information Technology in the delivery of both short and long termbusiness goals.

THE SUNY BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE INITIATIVE (SBII) UPDATE

Helen Ernst, System AdministrationDave Powalyk, System AdministrationCharlie Young, SICAS Center

Presenters

The SBI Committees have worked together to bring Business Intelligence to SUNY. The SBII has several initial successes, including production deployment of Business Intelligence dashboards at System Administration.Presently, we are planning the future direction of the SBI Initiative; we will discuss plans which include proposed SUNY Business Intelligence servicesand solutions for campuses. In order to provide a complete solution to campuses, the SBI vision includes three levels of information provisioning:

1. Providing University Wide Data from System Administration and the Research Foundation using OBI Dashboards2. Using a SICAS developed OBI Repository to provide campuses the ability to create dashboards based on the SunGard Operational Data Store(ODS)3. Provide support for campuses to achieve local business intelligence ontheir campuses.

In order to coordinate the three levels, the SBI Leader workgroup is developing BI architecture best practices; these recommendations will provide a framework to give campuses an integrated business intelligenceexperience.

FROM PBX TO "OFFICE IN A BOX"

Scott May, Delhi Technology CollegePresenters

In 2007 Delhi embarked on an initial step to replace the data network, which led to an emergency notication system (Public Address), to VoIP service, to VPN soft-phone service, to "Ofce in a Box" VPN service. The Nortel uncertaintly led us leverage the VoIP infrastructure used for the PA system begin deployment of VoIP. This has been an iterative/incremental development process versus traditional rip and replace. The changes haveprogressed as they could be articulated without undertaking a massive project. Both the technique for managing the changes and the technology shift have been much more rapid than could have occurred using traditionalproject methods and budget processes. While there are advantages in having an entirely Cisco Network; the Wireless; VoIP; NAC; VPN and ASA (rewall) are all solutions deployable within existing networks of other manufacturers.

RETHINKING THE PROJECT DESIGN PROCESS

Ron Rosenblum, Delhi Technology CollegePresenters

So many projects are implemented based on a client!s whim: “I saw this really cool software [or other technology] at a conference and I want it here.” Often no consideration is given to what impact the new technology will have on the department!s business processes and operations, who willbe responsible for it and how staff members will be trained to use it. For thetechnology service organization, there is no preliminary discussion of the resources necessary to implement it and how it will be supported. There isno outcomes assessment, just the expectation it will be done.Delhi has put a project design process in place that, using Agile Project Management concepts, documents needs assessments, gathers requirements and builds use cases. The process culminates in readiness assessments for both IT!s ability to implement and support the project and the requesting department!s plan for incorporating it. Further this whole process occurs in our enterprise wiki so the campus community at large iswelcome to provide input. This session will focus on Delhi!s project documentation and assessment process and how it ts into the campus!s overall planning process.
