... continued from cover

The Secret Garden was fi rst

produced at the Trinity by Michael

back in 1995. It was the start

of a succession of dramatised

productions that has become the

hallmark of the Trinity’s Christmas

calendar. Since that fi rst production,

the decision was made to continue

to produce shows that would stand

out as different amidst the usual

pantomimes. It was a huge risk

at the time and Michael put in

much of his own money but the

decision paid off and from there we

have seen countless re-imaginings

of popular literature, including

Worzel Gummidge and The Wind

in the Willows that have been very

successful with local audiences.

The Secret Garden will use much

of the talent pool within the Trinity

family, including actors, production

designers and stage workers. What

stood out for Michael when he fi rst

put The Secret Garden on was the

brilliant idea by his designers to use

a revolving stage; this visionary idea

gave the production a magical feel

and speeded up the transitions from

one scene to the next. Again, this

year’s offering will be full of magic

and he will be bringing many of the

ideas that worked fi fteen years ago to

this new production.

When he fi rst put The Secret Garden

on, Michael played the Gardener

as well as directing, but this time

he will give himself no such part. I

asked him what would make this

year’s production different to the one

that was produced years ago and he

reminded me that it will be what the

actors and designers will bring to the

script that will mark it out as unique.

Of his own style, Michael says that

he is a very open director, choosing

not to be autocratic but allowing the

creative team the chance to fi nd their

way with the story and to breathe. He

relies on a very professional team to

interpret its own vision and seems to

relish in the war of words that carries a

production from being good to great.

Auditions are open for The Secret

Garden and, as with many recent

productions, it will be a mix of

professional actors and local amateur

talent. His one headache could well be

the rehearsal schedule, with amateurs

unable to rehearse during the day

and children not available until the

weekends. It could be a very testing

time but the rewards from it are well

worth the stress.

tHriVing tHeAtreIt has been a good year for The Trinity

despite the current climate. Figures

have proved that here is a theatre

thriving from doing the simple things

well. The Secret Garden is a genuine

family musical that all children will

love. Both girls and boys will fi nd

characters they can connect with and

it has comedy, magic and wonderful

musical numbers. This is a must-see

for the coming Christmas season. And

Michael is a fascinating man, a gem

in our arts scene, and I wish him all

the continued success for what is a

very special theatre.

F rances Hodgson

Burnett's book The

Secret Garden has been

called one of the greatest

children's books ever. It's a heart-

warming story about an orphan

girl, who is diffi cult to get on with

because she has been neglected.

She is thurst into the company of

her invalid cousin, who has suffered

a similar fate. Between them, they

fi nd a secret garden – and manage

to fi nd the good in each other.

Hodgson Burnett was an

Englishwoman who emigrated to

America. In the mid-1890s, she

returned to England to live at Great

Maytham Hall near Rolvenden in

Kent. Here, she found a neglected

walled garden, which became the

inspriation for her novel. Originally

published as a serial in an American

magazine,

The Secret

Garden was

published

as a book

in Britain

and

America

in 1911.

This month, I’m going to

kick off with Brigadoon

– a charming musical

from Lerner and Loewe,

which tells of a Scottish village that

only appears for one day every one

hundred years. Of course, love is

involved (what else!) and much

singing is enjoyed. It was fi rst

produced in 1947 on Broadway and

ran for over 500 performances. It

quickly transferred to the West End

with similar success. In 1954 it was

turned into an all-star

Hollywood movie

starring Gene Kelly

and Cyd Charisse.

Numberjacks, those super-heroes from

CBeebies, have a live show that any

young person will surely fall in love

with. If you can stand the suspense of

the evil Spooky Spoon or The Puzzler

(scary characters for a pre-school show

in my opinion), then hop along for the

live show on 10th November.

Arts At tHe MuseuMMoving on from theatre, our museum

is continuing to build on its growing

reputation as a grand supporter of the

arts with its exhibition Artisan at the

Museum from 4th November through

to the end of December. I love the fact

that the musuem is using its space for

some really fantastic work and this

promises to fi nish the year off in style.

Although popular, it does not hold

the same place in the heart as

other Lerner and Loewe musicals

such as My Fair Lady. But it has

generated a strong following and

has enjoyed many revivals, both

professionally and on the amateur

stage. TWODS have performed

Brigadoon on many occasions

and now it returns again with

a brand new production at The

Assembly Hall Theatre from

22nd November. Featuring

much-loved classic songs such as

Almost Like Being In Love, this is

a wonderfully bright and warm

musical that is ideal for the pre-

Christmas chaos. Enjoy!

November 2011 /

And At trinitY...Trinity Theatre cinema is offering

some very powerful movies in its

November calendar. First of all

comes The Devil’s Double, a bitter

and twisted tale about an Iraqi

forced to act as a body double

for Uday Hussain, Saddam’s son.

Excellently played by Dominic

Cooper in both parts, he received

rave reviews and, from what I have

read, went through some

personal turmoil playing the

two opposing parts. Well

worth a look and surprising

that a movie like this should

come from the director of

the awful Bond movie Die

Another Day. Showing 20th

November.

Lars Von Trier is a director

who divides opinion with every

movie he makes and his latest

is no exception. Melancholia is

an apocalyptic drama about two

sisters during the wedding of

one of them, while a planet is on

course to collide with the Earth.

A brilliant cast (Kirsten Dunst,

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Keifer

Sutherland) should make this

movie, which was well received at

Cannes until Von Trier’s infamous

interview. 30th November.

To balance these two heavy

offerings, The Blind Pig’s Comedy

Trot-out comes to the Trinity

stage on 25th November and the

much-loved Comedy Café returns

on 17th November. The Blind Pig

is the brainchild of local actor

Peter Basham and offers a glorious

evening of sketches and hilarity.

This is because

Catholicism

was seen as an

undesirable political and

England.

In fact, an act of parliament was

passed in 1606 proclaiming the 5th

of November to be a day of public

thanksgiving. This remembrance was

to take the form of a morning church

service in every parish, with ringing of

bells and cannons fi ring.

Of course, these religious

tensions are largely forgotten today

in our more tolerant society, but

the Gunpowder Plot does have an

important place in British history

that should not be forgotten. For a

the 5th of November?

Or is it just an

a bonfi re, while its real origins are

lost in time?

susseX bOnFireWell, in the villages of Sussex (and

the Kent borders), the bonfi re

tradition is very much alive, as

torch-lit processions, bonfi res

and fi reworks abound from early

September onwards.

Lewes is, of course, the most

famous, with serious attempts by

the authorities to stop people from

outside the town attending, due

to overcrowding. However, the

Battel Bonfi re Boyes claims to be

the oldest bonfi re society, with a

founding date of 1646.

Sussex bonfi re societies have their

roots in countrywide celebrations

that took place in thanksgiving for

Well, they are soon about to

Productions will be telling them all

about it with their explosive new

family show that mixes storytelling,

comedy and theatre, and is choc-

plots, awful wigs and some very

cunning conspiracy theories.

Matt Watts, co-writer of

the show said, “It seems that

Festive markets at the Pantiles

T he Pantiles is undoubtedly

the heart of our town –

and at Christmas it’s extra

special. So warm up for

the festive season by taking a walk to

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Two weekends of Christmas Markets

are set to take place on the 3rd to

4th and 17th to 18th December from

10am to 6pm on Saturdays and

10am to 4pm on Sundays. Fresh local

local craft and gift ideas. And for those

of you who really do leave it till the

last minute, a last-chance late night

shopping event – with a few surprises

in store – is also planned for Thursday

22nd December!

Meanwhile a programme of

traditional entertainment is on offer,

most of which will take place on the

illuminated bandstand, including male

voice choirs, carolers, bands and festive

Morris men. Youngsters will be kept

amused by treasure hunts and Father

Christmas shopping can be stressful –

but it doesn’t have to be. The Pantiles

is such a pleasant place to be, it can

only help that decision-making process.

There are some some fabulous gift

ideas from a range of interesting and

eclectic chain and independent stores:

• aspirational brands such as Jack

Wills and ladies fashion store Coco

• new vintage concept store, Stuff &

Good Sense

• new children’s knitware store,

Sue Hill

• Gardener & Cook (above) for

horticulturists and chefs

• quality kitchen items from Trevor

Mottram, Pantiles stalwart and one of

the country’s leading kitchenware shops

Add to all this galleries, a camera

shop, a coffee specialist and Chinese

antiquities, and you can’t go wrong!

eAsY tO wAlK Or driVeWith the ice rink open at Calverley Park

and Hoopers opening extra hours over

Christmas, there’s likely to be a buzz of

activity at the bottom end of town. The

Pantiles is an easy walk from the High

at The Pantiles car park on Major Yorks

Road (adjacent to The Common),

Union House on Eridge Road (before

Sainsbury’s roundabout) and at Linden

Park Road (behind the Corn Exchange).

Some street parking is also available.

stOP AwHile...Having shopped (and hopefully not

dropped!), there’s the opportunity to

dine out with a choice of English, Italian,

Spanish, Mexican and Indian cuisine

– or just grab a hot chocolate or coffee

at one of the many cafés, or something

stronger at one of the four pubs along

The Pantiles itself. Let’s drink to that!

Serves: 8-10

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time...

Rare: 20 minutes per 450g/1lb plus 20 minutes

Medium: 25 minutes per 450g/1lb plus 25 minutes

Well done: 30 minutes per 450g/1lb plus 30 minutes

you will need

2.7kg/6lb lean boneless rib of beef,

sirloin or traditional rump roast

Salt and freshly milled black pepper

 10ml/2 tsp ground allspice

 10ml/2 tsp ground mace

 5ml/1 tsp ground nutmeg

40g/1 1/2 oz light soft brown sugar

 45ml/3 tbsp port

For the red wine gravy:

 15ml/1 tbsp plain fl our

300ml/ 1/2 pint good, hot beef stock

300ml/ 1/2 pint good red wine

now do this:

1. Preheat the oven to Gas mark 4-5, 180-190°C, 350-375°F.

2. In a small bowl mix the spices and sugar together.

3. Place the joint on a chopping board; make several slashes over the surface of the joint, taking care not to cut the butcher’s string or elasticated meat bands and season. Coat on both sides with the spice mixture. Place the joint on a rack in a roasting tin and open roast for the preferred, calculated cooking time. Cover with foil if browning too quickly.

4. Ten minutes before the end of the cooking time remove the joint from the oven and brush with the Port. Return to the oven for the remainder of the cooking time.

5. Remove the beef from the oven, cover and leave to rest for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, to make the gravy, spoon off any excess fat from the roasting tin and discard. Place the tin over a medium heat and sprinkle with the fl our. Stir well with a small whisk or spoon, add a little stock and stir again, scraping the base of the pan to release any rich, beefy sediment.

6. Add the remaining stock, wine and any meat juices from the platter. Adjust the seasoning, if required and simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally or until reduced to a well-fl avoured gravy. Strain before serving.

Garnish the beef with fresh rosemary leaves and serve with seasonal vegetables and the gravy.

natural with horses

N atasha Rathour is

an equine therapist

and horse whisperer.

She practises in Kent

and East Sussex, using natural

horse communication techniques.

She explained to us how equine

therapy works and how it can be

of real benefi t to people who are

experiencing challenges in their life.

what is eQuine facilitated theraPy(eft)?Horses are intuitive and healing

beings. When working with horses in

a therapeutic environment, you’ll fi nd

that they mirror your emotions and

issues. They help you get to the core

of what’s going on and in turn release

inhibitions. It's clinically proven that

being in the vicinity of horses changes

our brainwave patterns for the better.

how does it work?Participants are invited into a safe

space to communicate with horses at

liberty. The horse’s body language is

then translated in response. A series

of individually tailored activities

with the horses are then carried out.

The whole process helps to deepen

awareness of personal issues, core

feelings and areas of bodily tension

that inhibit a person’s potential.

for childrenEFT is benefi cial to all children.

It can help them to develop, learn

about themselves and others. It’s a

‘communication therapy’ that proves

to be particularly useful for children

with learning diffi culties, autism,

ADD and bipolar disorders – and

those that may fi nd it diffi cult to

express themselves coherently,

interact with other people and

carry out instructions. Children

are usually more in tune with their

bodies and feelings. Horses love

to be in their company, which is

so wonderful to see. Results in

children who have taken part in EFT

include increased concentration in

learning, confi dence, motor skills,

co-ordination and self control.

for adultsAdult participants are welcomed into a

confi dential and non-judgemental, safe

space. They are invited to speak their

truths and watch how the horses react

in response. With my help, the horse

leads the way to support the participant

to overcome fears, release patterns and

emotional blocks. Participants are then

set exercises to strengthen themselves

emotionally and mentally. Some of

the issues that EFT can help with

include: bereavement, abuse, fi nancial

worries, depression, confi dence, career,

family and personal life, self-trust and

communication plus much more.
