    14th hole at the Nevill

STAYGO: And what has been the highlight of your career?

JAMIE: I shot 60 to win in the last round of the European Masters in 1992, which is a

record that hasnt been beaten, and Im very

proud of that. I also represented England

three times in the World Cup and Ive played

    in the Dunhill Cup twice.

STAYGO: Lee Westwood has just achieved the world number 1 spot. What are

    your thoughts on that?

JAMIE: British golf is going from strength to strength. We have lots of great young

players, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey to name

just two. Lee Westwood has worked very

hard and its a just reward for him. Golf is a

wonderful game for young people and our

clubs are doing a fantastic job with juniors.

STAYGO: What else fi lls your time?

JAMIE: I represent the players on the European Tour and I very much enjoy that.

I also do live commentary for SKY TV and

Radio Five Live, which is nerve-wracking

but a lot of fun. And I love all kinds of sport,

from watching my two sons play rugby to

supporting Arsenal. I also coach the juniors

    at Langton Green FC.

STAYGO: And fi nally, whats the best thing about living in Tunbridge Wells?

JAMIE: Theres a lot happening and it has great restaurants. And its beautiful

countryside, so I love getting out and taking

the dog for a walk. Ive lived here all my life

    and never wanted to move!

STAY GO: Thanks for talking to us! And all the best for the future!

    A GREAT COURSE...

The Nevill Golf ClubThe history of golf in Tunbridge

    Wells begins in 1890, when a 9-hole

course was opened at the Spa, and

then six years later the Culverden

Club was founded. Both these clubs

had a restricted membership, and it

was not until 1914, when the Nevill

Golf Club was formed, that the

game could be enjoyed by a wider

    range of the town's inhabitants.

The Nevill now has over 800

members and is one of the most

prestigous clubs in Kent. It's a

parkland course, set in the middle

of beautiful countryside and it offers

    an outstanding 18-hole experience.

OUTSTANDING COURSEIt sits on the southern edge of

    Tunbridge Wells, off Forest Road,

and has a magnifi cent view

south from the verandah of the

    clubhouse over the wooded slopes

of Bayham and Frant. The course

    is exceptionally enjoyable and

challenging at the same time and,

    stretches to nearly 6,500 yards.

The club believes that it offers

the ideal place for you to enjoy your

golf, with a friendly atmosphere and

great facilities. Many holes on the

    course are memorable, but the

    10th and 11th, back-to-back par

fi ves, stand out for most people. It

is said that if you can get through

this without tearing your card up

and you've done very well indeed!

The club is very busy throughout

    the year with competitions and

events and it also boasts a well

stocked pro shop with a great

    range of the latest equipment.

And when you're not on the

golf course, excellent food and drink

can be had in the clubhouse with

the club's courteous and effi cient

staff providing the best of service in

    comfortable surroundings.

    VISITORS WELCOMESocieties and groups are

    welcomed and the club prides

itself on its attention to detail with

the top value golf packages that

it offers. There are also wedding

    venue and business facilities for

    non-golfers. Visitors are welcome

but are advised to book with the

    secretary in advance to avoid

    disappointment. Membership is

avaliable, so contact the club for

    more details.

    TWO LITTLE GEMS

1NUMBERFOR A PERFECT LITTLE COFFEE BREAK

    Y oure halfway down your

    Christmas shopping list

    and youre fl agging its

defi nitely time for a rest,

so check out these wonderful coffee

stops and recharge your energy levels!

    Visit Tiffi n caf and

youll be sure of a friendly

    welcome from proprietor Claudia

Baistow and her staff. Its a perfect

venue for coffee, brunch or lunch.

NEW VENTURETiffi n is a reasonably new venture for

Claudia. She spent many years working

as a graphic designer on The Telegraph

before deciding on a complete change

of direction. Previously she had spent

time running a pub and she had done

    some outside catering. That, together

with the fact that she grew up in

Tunbridge Wells, made her decide to

start her own caf business, with the

help of her family and mum Diane,

right in the centre of town. And Castle Street is a great location.

Its a quiet cobbled street, right next

to the High Street and a stones throw

away from the Pantiles. Tiffi n itself

    occupies a quaint building with

    enormous amounts of antique

    charm, however, inside the dcor

is light and relaxed with modern

    furniture and a contemporary

    colour scheme. Adorning the walls

    downstairs are stylish photographs

of Tunbridge Wells, taken by local

    Tiffi n

    THIS CHRISTMAS

    photographers John and Cathy Butler.

They have managed to capture familiar

scenes of the town but in unusual ways.

    Upstairs, there are also photographs

by Claudias father Peter Baistow. All

the photographs are for sale another

    idea for Christmas presents perhaps?

And anyone walking from the top of the

town to the bottom only has to take a

few steps off the route to fi nd this little

    haven.

LOCAL PRODUCEOn the menu is a range of hearty

    sandwiches, brunch items and

delicious cakes that any shopper will

fi nd fortifying. An effort is made to

    source all the

    produce locally

    and everything is

    home-cooked. As

    well as the cosy

    downstairs room,

    theres a little gem of

    a room upstairs. There you

will fi nd a table and chairs, plus a

comfy sofa and armchairs, with a little

window looking down onto the street

    below. The atmosphere resembles

your very own living room, so if you

really want to get away from the

crowd head for the upstairs! And if

youre in doubt about what to choose

from the menu, try the eggy bread

and bacon, perfect for fortifying the

    weary shopper. And dont forget

to fi nish with a pot of tea and the

signature cake a delicious slice of

    tiffi n, of course!

In addition to running the caf,

Claudia also takes on outside catering

events, such as canap parties, and the

upstairs room is available for hire by

groups or for business meetings. And

you can even hire Tiffi n for private

    dinner parties in the

    evenings. You bring your

    own alcohol and enjoy

    the company of friends

    in your own special

    space, without the

    cooking or clearing up!

A FLAVOUR OF ITALYGianni says he serves the best coffee

in town so call in to Arte Bianca

on the corner of Chapel Place and

fi nd out! In fact, Arte Bianca was

listed as one of the top 9 coffee hits

in the UK by The Times last year,

    alongside famous names such as

    Bettys in Harrogate.

This little caf and deli is

    absolutely packed with treasures

from its native Italy. While you

perch on a high stool and savour

    your chosen beverage, why not

    survey the shelves and decide

what to buy for the food and

    drink lovers on your Christmas

list? There are bottles and jars

of olive oils and sauces, boxes

    of amaretti biscuits, pasta and

bottles of Italian wine, plus an

    amazing selection of fresh olives,

meats and cheeses to give you a

    real taste of Italian

    cuisine.

    Pop in for the panettone!

    On top of your

    must buy list has to

    be the panettone.

    This traditional

    Italian cake is

    fast becoming a

    regular on the list of

    Christmas desserts

and it also makes a beautiful gift

because of the way its presented.

Choose from a range of gorgeous

    boxes for an impressive looking

present for the in-laws! It stays fresh

for days and Italian tradition says that

a slice of panettone taken with a sip of

    sparkling Prosecco guarantees good

luck and health for the coming year.

    The particular brand of panettone

that Arte Bianca sells is called

Flamigni. It comes in different sizes

and fl avours so theres something for

everyones taste. And this is the only

place in the UK, apart from Harrods

and Selfridges, where you can get this

    particular traditional brand. So give

the panettone a try and good luck

    and good health to all!

    T unbridge Wells is

    rampant with art

    galleries and some

    of them are giving us

    special winter exhibitions.

WOBBLYBRIDGE GALLERYOne of the most exciting

galleries we have in the town

    is Wobblybridge Gallery in

    Camden Road. This art space

has been open for eight months

and offers an opportunity for all

aspiring artists and fi lm makers

to rent the gallery to show their

work. Paul, the owner, is very

    keen to promote upcoming

and raw talent and bring an

    underground vibe to Tunbridge

    Wells. He stresses that the

gallery is non-profi t making and

any rental charge given to the

artist is put into the running of

the gallery. This is an unusual

    and attractive space that

    welcomes visitors and is trying

to promote works of art to more

    than the discerning collector.

    The past eight months has

seen a varying style of artists

    on show, some introducing

    some eye-catching displays

    that incorporated short

    fi lms. Wobblybridge will be

    showcasing all of this years

    talent in their winter exhibition,

    inviting back and celebrating

with all the artists who have

    featured there during 2010. The

exhibition is on now until 31st

    January 2011 and features an

    eclectic mix of sculpture and

    canvas. All items are available

ZAC THRAVESfor sale, making for a unique and

    personal Christmas present if you

feel so inclined. The gallery has a

wonderful feel to it, giving a modern

edge and utilising its space very well.

See their website for more details,

where you can load up your own art

into their on-line gallery, or contact

Paul for opening times on 01892

548260. He is always happy to greet

    passers-by and I would recommend

    a visit. www.wobblybridge.co.uk

BLUE MOON GALLERYBlue Moon Gallery, also in Camden

    Road gives another unique

    shopping experience as you browse

around local art and other items.

A particular favourite of mine was

a tea light holder made from a

seashell. This is a great gallery that

not only shows local works of art

in canvas, but also offers smaller

trinkets for those of us on a budget

    and looking for inexpensive but

novel Christmas presents. It is all

local work and is well worth going

    in to have a browse.

A new year is just around

    the corner and most

    people turn their

    thoughts to getting fi tter

and starting something new. So why

not give golf a try? Whether you're

a beginner or an expert, read on for

some great local places to play a great

    game of golf.

Tunbridge Wells Golf ClubOriginally part of the Spa Hotel in

    Langton Road, Tunbridge Wells Golf

Club was designed in the Victorian

    era and opened in 1889. It's a 9-hole

course, stretching to 2,355 yards. Or

you can make it the full 18 holes by

starting off from different tees. It's a

course with many bunkers and natural

hazards, fantastic greens and all set

in beautiful parkland. It has stunning

views across the countryside and is

a great course for novices and more

established golfers. There is a trial

membership scheme in place at one

month for 50, plus special offers for

golfers aged 18-25. Call the club for

    more information.

Lamberhurst Golf ClubThe 18 holes at Lamberhurst

are set in mature parkland with

    spectacular views. The course

reaches to 6,423 yards off the

back tees and looks simple but the

subtle slopes test even the lowest

handicapper. The 12th hole is the

'fl agship' at 217 yards, with a carry

over water, and you will be well

on the way to a good golf round.

    Lamberhurst is actively encouraging

new members, so call for details.

    original Dale Hill Course, opened

over 35 years ago, complimented by

    the Ian Woosnam Course, designed

by the former Masters Champion and

Ryder Cup Captain. It has greatly

benefi ted from a recent multimillion

    pound investment and there are

    practice facilities including a driving

range with several covered bays, a

    practice bunker and two practice

putting greens. A newly built pro shop

Crowborough Beacon Golf ClubEstablished in 1895 Crowborough

    Beacon is an excellent, mature

heathland course close to the highest

point in Sussex at nearly 800ft above

sea level. It is regularly included

in the reviews of the top rated golf

courses in the British Isles and it has

spectacular views to the South Downs

from the course and clubhouse. A

historic club, one its most famous

    members was Sir Arthur Conan

    Doyle, who lived at Windlesham

Manor, just a stone's throw from the

    clubhouse. He was elected captain

    in 1910 and his wife

    became lady captain in

    1911. In more recent

    times, Crowborough

    Beacon became the

If you don't feel like committing to membership just yet or if you want to get in some extra practice, then why not check out a driving range? Here are two top picks, within easy reach of Tunbridge Wells.

TONBRIDGE GOLF CENTREThis great facility really does offer something for all the family. As well as a driving range and a tricky par 3 golf course, there's also a crazy golf course that's just opened perfect for getting the little ones interested in hitting a ball! However, for those of you who are a bit more serious about your golf, you can take lessons from one of the professionals at Hunter Knight Golf Coaching, based at the golf centre. Hunter Knight offer group and indivdual lessons, plus they run many activities for junior players specialist lessons, holiday golf camps and competitions all to encourage youngsters to get involved in the game.

Nizels Golf and Country ClubNizels was established in 1992

    on an historic estate near

    Hildenborough that dates back

to the middle ages. Situated on

    high ground, it overlooks the

    beautiful Kent Weald. The 18-hole

    championship course is a classic

    English parkland design, developed

using the natural contours of the

    countryside. Every feature has been

enhanced to add character to each

hole and it includes several lakes

that make it a tough challenge.

Nizels also has a state of the art

    health club which offers something

for you and your family to enjoy

when you're not out on the course.

It includes Aura, the health and

treatment spa, and the Pulse cafe,

where you can relax, read the

papers or chat over coffee. The

    facilities are available for private

    hire for Christmas parties. And

and was a golf journalist for the

Daily Telegraph. Ranked among the all-time top golfers, she played

mixed with pork sausage meat and

red onion. In the main cavity, put

a few root vegetables and maybe

an orange for moisture. Cover the

    breast in fatty, streaky bacon.

orn There are lots of recipes on

how to cook a turkey, but I think

long and slow is best. Pre-heat

the oven to 180C and cook for 20

minutes. Then reduce heat to 130C

    for 20 minutes per pound.

orn Check how its doing with a probe thermometer inserted into the thigh

or breast. When it reaches 75C,

take it out of the oven and let it rest

for 30 minutes to retain the juices.

    Then carve!

    The legal minimum

    of 1.6mm of tread

    is less than twice the

    thickness of a CD but

during the winter a minimum of

3mm is essential because the deeper

tread will be more effective at

    clearing water. Also, maintain your

    tyres at the correct pressure.

    BATTERY

    CHARGED?

    Modern batteries

    have many

    advantages, but if

    allowed to discharge, they will

take a long time to recharge fully.

They suffer at this time of year

particularly in cars that do short

    journeys on cold mornings. Youll

either need to make a regular long

journey with minimal use of the

cars electrical items or arrange to

    trickle charge the battery.

L ast June, Valley Saab in

    Pembury ceased to be

    a Saab main dealer and

    became the Pembury

    Auto Centre. The business changed

the focus of what it does by offering

servicing and repairs to all makes

    and models, although it remains

a Saab and Honda specialist. Its

the same staff as before, which

is important to the business, as

    customer service is paramount.

In fact, under Valley Saab, it

    achieved number 1 position in

    customer satisfaction nationally

    among the Saab dealer network.

    Dom Esposito, managing

director of the new Pembury Auto

Centre, told us, Weve put in a

    huge investment to update our

    equipment but were keeping prices

    reasonable and getting a great

    response from the public!

    COLD ENGINES

    Modern engines

    dont need tucking

    up with a blanket on

    cold nights but it can

help if its an old car. Make sure you

    have your anti-freeze concentration

    checked to prevent freezing. Depress

the clutch when starting a cold engine.

This disconnects the engine from the

    gearbox so theres less drag.

    SCREENWASH

    READY?

    Keep it topped up and

    use a proper additive at

    the right concentration.

Dont use washing up liquid though as

it will foam horribly and doesnt have

the same low freezing point. Many

garages sell sachets or small bottles of

    screenwash for pennies.

    BODYWORK CARE

    Wash the car often

to get rid of salt and

    dirt. Check for stone

    chips too, as rust forms

very quickly in the cold, damp weather.

    Replace missing wheel trims promptly

to minimise corrosion to the wheel

bolts because they can seize up, making

removal of the wheels diffi cult.
