Our Mission is the prevention of domestic violence through theprotection and empowerment of the victim, the rehabilitation of familymembers, the advocacy for social reform to prevent partner violence, and the education of the public about domestic violence and itsconsequences.

Our Vision is to create a community-wide culture that does nottolerate the presence of any form of family or partner violence…a culture that holds abusers accountable for their actions and victims blameless for their victimization…and a culture that works purposefully to foster healthyrelationships, teaching all children the importance of mutual respectbetween partners.

Our Message of Gratitude and Reflection

We are pleased to share Safe Places, our 2019 Annual Report. Thanks to your amazing dedication to our mission, JBWS continues its critical work to provide safety, support, and solutions for domestic abuse. In this report, we highlight our year’s accomplishments and feature a few new exciting initiatives. In 2019, we opened our safe house to our first male victim and expanded services for the LGBTQ+ community. The successful launch of our Rapid Rehousing program, a new housing model for victims of domestic violence in NJ, placed families in permanent supportive housing from the onset. The Morris Family Justice Center continued to be an accessible place where victims and their children could walk in off of the street to find a wide array of supportive services from counseling and legaladvocacy to case management and safe housing, just to name a few.

Our strong program development work in 2019, coupled with our solid financial support, positioned us well for the world health crisis we were all about to experience. There is no doubt that 2020 will be forever remembered as the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. As businesses closed throughout the state, JBWS stayed open. The same isolation that helped us to flatten the curve and slow the pandemic also increased the risk for victims of abuse. Victims and their children were literally stuck at home with their abusers. Our safe house and transitional living apartments remained open and operational, while our counseling, legal advocacy, and community education services went virtual to provide critical supportto those in the community.

Fortunately, we don’t have to do this work alone. So many of you reached out to say, “How can I help?” And, then you did! Whether it was through supporting the success of our first virtual Grand Tastings event, providing much-needed COVID-19 relief funding, or thedonation of meals or masks for our staff and residents, we couldn’t do this without you!

In addition to dealing with the pandemic, these are challenging social times. Our survivors come to us with many experiences of power and control, whether in the form ofinterpersonal violence or racism or the many other forms of oppression, and they cannot be separated one from the other. We are committed to creating safe spaces for dialogues within our organization about how racism and other forms of structural oppression andinequalities affect us, our relationships, our organizations, and our communities.

As we look ahead to the second half of 2020 and beyond, we face an uncertain future. However, we know that with you by our side, we can continue to create safe places foreveryone who needs them.

A Welcoming PlaceOver the past several years, JBWS has actively worked toward creating best practices for serving LGBTQ+ individuals by visiting other shelters, speaking to providers around the country, attending conferences, creating internal work groups and training staff andvolunteers. Current practices, environment, and structure were evaluated and adjustments were made where needed (e.g., intake and assessment, co-ed support groups, bathroom use, pictures, décor, outreach materials). As is consistent with our mission and our values, all victims of any gender are being welcomed into all of our services.

An Accessible PlaceFor many victims, the journey of receiving services proves to be too difficult as they become burdened with going from place to place. In the process, many lose hope and return to their abusive situations. The Morris Family Justice Center continues to offer the door to hope and safety for survivors and their families. With JBWS as the lead agency of this best practicenational service delivery model, the partner agencies work together to providecomprehensive, coordinated services. In 2019, inside this one place, more than 400 survivors were empowered to access the services they needed.

A Place for EveryoneIn 2019, JBWS began using its acronym JBWS rather than “Jersey Battered Women’s Service” to create a more inclusive environment and accepted the first male-identified victim of abuse into the safe house. Historically, domestic violence programs were born from the women’s liberation movement to address female survivors. Today, the CDC estimates thatintimate partner violence impacts 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men.

Societal messages make it difficult for males to seek help: men don’t get depressed, men don’t ask for help, men don’t need therapy, and men are notsupposed to be victims. JBWS is building itscapacity to recognize and respond to survivors across the gender spectrum, while honoring the gender analysis that helps us understand root causes of violence and oppression.

Creating Safe Places: 2019 Highlights

US Congresswoman Sherrill, a co-sponsor of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) visited our residential programs to get a firsthand look at the services and to discuss JBWS’ critical work with JBWS president and CEO Diane Williams.

A Permanent Place to LiveToo many victims who lack the job training and the financial resources needed to live independently must choose between becoming homeless orreturning to their abuser. JBWS’ new RapidRehousing (RRH) program promotes housingstability for families in need of permanent housing. A Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) initiative, it is a proven strategy for decreasing homelessness in communities.

Here’s how the program works. Along with providing subsidized rental assistance to program participants for up to one year, RRH also offers intensive case management and support services designed to help families successfully keep their housing and engage with the community.

Residents of the Safe House are eligible to be referred to the Rapid Rehousing program for further screening based on their income and readiness for participation. Once accepted into the program, they receive regular resources on budgeting, good housekeeping, neighbor/landlord relations and more.

The funding and planning phase of the Rapid Rehousing program were completed in 2019 with a goal of serving seven families. As of July 2020, JBWS is proud to report that we have exceeded our goal and have accepted our tenth client into the program. We understand that housing success is connected to education, employment and a network of emotional and social support. The RRH advocate/case manager will stay connected to our participants as needed for up to two years.

Everyone deserves a safe home. Rapid Rehousing strengthens survivor tenants andcommunities while benefitting landlords.

Thanks to JBWS’ Rapid Rehousing program,my children and I have a place of our ownand I have received the financial assistanceI needed (along with my scholarship) tocomplete my coursework and certificationto become a Home Health Nurse.

Taneka Bowles, wife of former NY Jets Coach Todd Bowles, was honored at JBWS’ Autumn Auction for Hope event for her generous support of JBWS, including the fulfillment of our transitional apartment wish lists for ten apartment units.

Think about it like this, when your average person drives home

from work, they listen to the news, reflect on goals, plan, pray.

My drive home consisted of blocking all of the contacts in my

phone book, making a video recording of any traffic, being sure

to capture the radio with a time/date indicator so I could justify

the length of time from the office to the house.
