As the nation “turns pink” for the 28 th annual breast cancer awareness month this October, the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (GBCCF) continues to focus on teaching local women the basics of breast cancer and healthy lifestyle choices to help prevent it. GBCCF received a grant last fall to conduct 10 workshops entitled The Faces of Breast Can- cer throughout the state. Funded through the sale of the Georgia Breast Cancer license tag, the grant was awarded to GBCCF for the workshops and is managed by the Georgia Center for Oncology Research & Education (CORE) and the Georgia State Office of Rural Health. “Nearly 9,000 Georgians will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. This disease is devastating, not only for these women, but for their families and our communities. It is our goal to help attendees explore the com- mon myths and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer and discover healthy lifestyle choices toward primary prevention of the disease. This workshop gives us a platform to do that” said Amy Upchurch, GBCCF’s Ex- ecutive Director. Each workshop is free to the public and is led by trained breast cancer advocates and breast health practitioners. Workshops fea- ture a presentation from a local legislator, and a speaker from the local health depart- ment to share resources for women who are uninsured or underinsured. Local survivors also share their stories with attendees, put- ting a face on the devastating effects of this disease. In 2013, GBCCF has presented workshops in Cherokee, North Fulton and Bibb counties. Additional workshops will be held later this fall in Cobb (10/21) and Chatham (11/9) counties. GBCCF will also host workshops in Dougherty, Floyd, Gwinnett and Hall counties in the coming months. A MESSAGE FROM GBCCF LEADERSHIP Numbers tell a compelling story. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide, ex-cluding skin cancer. In 2012, an estimated 8,907 Georgians were diagnosed with the disease. In the United States, the chance of a woman developing breast cancer during her life-time increased from about 1 in 11 in 1975 to 1 in 8 today. An estimated 40,000 Americans die from breast cancer every year—that’s one death every 14 minutes. Worldwide, breast cancer accounts for nearly one quarter of all cancers in women.

In September 2010, the National Breast Cancer Coalition launched a bold initia-tive to change the conversation about breast cancer. This nation has invested billions of dollars in research and technology but, the statistics have not changed significantly over the past decades. Our investments have brought us to the point where we have the knowledge, technology and tools to make a real difference.

GBCCF has joined forces with NBCC to leverage our investments and set a dead-line to end this disease by January 1, 2020. Deadlines matter! President Ken-nedy challenged this country to put a man on the moon by the end of the dec-ade, and the Apollo program was born. We want to take that same passion to save millions of lives worldwide.

There is much work to be done if we are to END this disease. We need to show the country and the world, that the breadth and diversity of our Georgia commu-nity will work together to make a real difference for breast cancer patients and their families. Are you with us?

19th Annual Pink Ribbons Luncheon & Fashion Show Atlanta Tradition, Raises Funds for Area Breast Cancer Organizations

Each October, the Pink Ribbons Luncheon & Fashion Show kicks off breast cancer awareness month in style. The event, in its 19th year, is sponsored by Belk and Georgia Plastic Surgery, P.C. Beneficiaries include the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund and the Metro Atlanta Breast Cancer Angel Fund of the Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation.

“Pink Ribbons is an Atlanta tradi-tion for more than 600 attendees every year. The support GBCCF receives through the event truly enables our organization to con-tinue its important education and advocacy efforts, serving as Geor-gia’s voice to end the disease,” said GBCCF Board President, Karen R. Korshak, CPA. Created especially for patients hav-ing breast reconstruction after mastectomy, all women fighting breast cancer, and those who en-counter it in the future, the fashion

show features breast cancer survivor models from the area. Pink Ribbons, developed by Sheldon Lincenberg, M.D., of Geor-gia Plastic Surgery, is a program of Kidejapa, a 501(c)3 organiza-tion. Since its inception, the event has raised nearly $1 million for local organizations dedicated to the fight against breast can-cer. Brenda Wood of 11Alive News emcees the event, with special comments from Honorary Chair Lori Allen of Bridals by Lori and TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress. Belk showcases fall and holiday fash-ions from designers including Cynthia Rowley, Michael Kors,

BCBG, Karen Kane, French Connec-tion, Vince Camuto, Trina Turk, Calvin Klein, Anne Klein and Eileen Fisher. Guests are invited to meet Cynthia Rowley at Belk and shop for show fashions and enjoy a des-sert coffee reception after the luncheon. The 2013 Sponsors in-clude, Belk, Georgia Plastic Sur-gery, Claire & Glen Jackson, Jim Ellis Automotive Group, Porsche, Circulatory Centers and Jezebel/Modern Luxury.

"Awareness," "Comfortable" and "Good Enough," NOT Enough

Despite years of campaigns to raise awareness, ever expand-ing screening programs, increased fundraising efforts and research, we are far from preventing breast cancer or pre-venting deaths from it. Breast cancer is a disease without borders or boundaries.

“It is time to end our addiction to comfortable. To easy. To good enough. We can't afford any more years of the status quo. It's time we take action! That’s why the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) set the deadline to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020,” said NBCC President, Fran Visco.

NBCC is committed to this mis-sion and is bringing together stakeholders from around the world to ensure that everyone, everywhere, with, or at risk of, breast cancer has access to information, quality care, clinical trials, and affordable lifesav-ing interventions. “By 2020 we want to know how to end breast cancer. We understand that on January 2, 2020, there is no way there will be no more breast cancer anywhere. There are so many access issues and so many difficult issues that need to be addressed. We do believe strongly that this is a deadline. We are setting a deadline and leading a movement. We are collaborating with scientists and leaders at every level to achieve the deadline,” Visco said.

This October, NBCC challenges you can to help make #BCD2020—that’s Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®—the trend-ing topic in social media and a household word for everyone who wants to see the goals of the deadline met. Ending breast cancer will take more than awareness. It will take ac-tion! Join the movement today!

THE ARTEMIS PROJECT ®

While we have increased our understanding of breast can-cer, and have had success in delaying progression of the disease for some women, we have not made adequate progress in eliminating morbidity and mortality from the disease. The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), committed to its mission to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020, continues to bring together key stakeholders to take a systematic, broad approach to the primary prevention of the disease as well as the prevention of metastasis.

As part of these efforts, NBCC launched The Artemis Pro-ject®. NBCC ‘s goal is to design and implement a strategic plan for the development of a breast cancer preventive vaccine by 2015. This first focus area was selected because of the potential impact toward an end to the disease. Re-cent scientific progress and increased knowledge about immunology, genomics, the molecular basis of tumor gene-sis and vaccine technology, have also created an unprece-dented opportunity for development of a preventive breast cancer vaccine.

Researchers, scientists and advocates have been collabo-rating for the past three years to answer key scientific questions within the areas of primary prevention and the prevention of metastasis.

BREAST CANCER DEADLINE 2020 ®

In September 2010 NBCC announced Breast Cancer Dead-line 2020®, a call to action for policymakers, researchers, breast cancer advocates, and other stakeholders to know how to end breast cancer by the end of the decade. The Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act (S. 865/H.R. 1830), introduced in both the U.S. House of Representa-tives and the Senate, is a vital component of Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® and designed to help achieve the deadline goal. While Congress has shown overwhelming bipartisan support for the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act, important members of the Georgia Congressional delega-tion have not yet cosponsored. Please join GBCCF in asking our Congressman to join their colleagues in cosponsoring the legislation and help end breast cancer once and for all. To determine who represents you, please visit www.votesmart.org. In order to know how to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020, we must all work together. By taking this important step, you can help bring us closer to this goal. To learn more about Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® and other ac-tions you can take go to www.BreastCancerDeadline.org or call GBCCF at 404.633.6499. GBCCF Participates in 2nd Annual Georgia Gives Day, November 13

The Georgia Center for Nonprofits (GCN) will kick off its second annual Georgia Gives Day on Wednesday, No-vember 13. This online fundraiser will benefit participating local nonprofits across the state, including GBCCF. The mission of Georgia Gives Day is to inspire individuals to donate to participating nonprofits with the goal of raising as much money as possible within a 24-hour period. GAgivesday.org makes donating easy and enables online donations to GBCCF by credit card or e-check. More information will be on our website, Facebook, Twit-ter and LinkedIn pages later this month.

On March 20, 2013, GBCCF brought together citizens

concerned about breast cancer to the Georgia State

Capitol. The group participated in an advocacy train-

ing session, and later met with legislators to educate

them about breast cancer, and advocate for an in-

crease in health department budgets and Medicaid

provider fees. GBCCF will host the 2014 Georgia Advo-

cacy Day during the next legislative session. If you are

interested in attending in 2014, please email us at

[email protected].

Each May, GBCCF takes on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, to

advocate for breast cancer research funding, push for access

to high-quality healthcare for all, and to expand the influ-

ence of breast cancer advocates in research, health care and

public policy. GBCCF advocate leaders, Ruth Eldredge, Re-

becca Walden, TK James and Amy Upchurch met with all 16

of Georgia’s elected officials on May 7, asking them to co-

sponsor the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act (S.

865/H.R. 1830). This legislation, first introduced in the 112th

Congress, is a critical component of NBCC’s Breast Cancer

Deadline 2020® initiative to know how to end breast cancer

by January 1, 2020. It would create the Commission to Accel-

erate the End of Breast Cancer to identify promising opportu-

nities, tools, technology and ideas not currently being priori-

tized for breast cancer by the public and private sectors, but

which hold true promise in ending breast cancer. To date,

Representatives Hank Johnson (D-4th), John Lewis (D-5th),

Sanford Bishop (D-2) and David Scott (D-13) are the only

Georgia Congressman to support this important piece of leg-

islation.
