Her syndrome normally causes her to have behavior- al breakdowns, but she had so much fun there were no meltdowns in our two hours in Staunton. I’d like to thank our tour guide, Ted, who became Morgan’s fast friend, and Mr. Parkinson. I appreciate everybody who came together to make this possible for Morgan today. She’s still so excited! “Our mission is working in partnership with others to preserve, promote and protect the wildlife, natural beauty and historic legacy of Staunton State Park for current and future generations.”

One night, in April 2001, Mark rolled his car when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer. As a result of this devastating accident, Mark was left a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down. In spite of his disability, Mark continued to spend time at his mountain cabin by Lions Head whenever he could.

In the summer of 2014, the year after Staunton State Park officially opened, Mark was again able to enjoy many of his favorite places with the help of a track chair borrowed from Craig Hospital.

Sadly, Mark passed away in his cabin on August 10, 2015. With the support of the Madsen family, Friends of Staunton State Park has established the Mark Madsen Accessibility Fund to help make the park accessible for persons with disabilities. Our three track chairs and trailer were purchased with funds raised in remembrance of Mark.

Join us for our annual fundraising BBQ in August where all proceeds will go to supporting the Track-Chair Program at Staunton, ensuring access for our visitors with disabilities to the great outdoors!

Staunton State ParkTrack-Chair ProgramContinuing the Healing Legacy of the Staunton FamilyStaunton State Park opened in May of 2013, thanks to the generous donation of 1,720 acres from Frances Staunton in 1986. She was the daughter of Archibald and Rachael Staunton, both doctors in Denver in the early 1900’s. Dr. Rachael Staunton and Frances spent summers on their ranch in the Elk Creek Valley which is now Staunton State Park. Dr. Rachael treated the local population that needed care as well as patients with tuberculosis. She also worked with the local Ute tribes and learned many of their herbal remedies.Today that healing legacy continues with the first track-chair program in the Colorado state park system, helping make the trails in Staunton State Park accessible to all. Thanks to the fund-raising efforts of Friends of Staunton State Park and the Mark Madsen Accessibility Fund (see details on the back of this brochure) three Action Trackchairs® and a trailer were purchased for the park.

Track-Chair Program DetailsThe track-chair program runs from June through October, depending on trail conditions. The track chairs are reservable at no charge on a first-come basis. Information can be found online at: www.cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/Staunton A brief questionnaire will be provided to ensure that the individual’s needs can be met for a successful “hike.” All participants need to be accompanied by their caregiver or companion on the hike. A Staunton volunteer will also be on the hike.A suggested checklist will be provided at the time of the reservation. Also, a state park pass for the vehicle entering the park is required and can be purchased at the entrance station.

For more information, email [email protected] or call 303-838-7975. Currently there are three trails designated for the track chairs. They are approximately 2.4 to 3.8 miles long and will take 3-5 hours.

DAVIS PONDS TRAIL (2.7-MILE LOOP) (Highlighted on map in green) – Easiest

The Davis Ponds Trail is a 2.7-mile loop. It rolls and winds through a coniferous forest and aspen meadows with multiple intermittent stream crossings. It takes you to the Davis fishing ponds where you will find a covered picnic area, accessible fishing pier and a rest room.

Accessibility for All.....The goal of Staunton’s track-chair program is to provide the means for those who do not have the mobility to hike the trails and to provide the opportunity to share the outdoor experience with friends. The Action Trackchairs® have been designed with simplicity of operation and stability for safety. All participants will submit a questionnaire with their abilities and special needs before the hike. A trained Staunton volun-teer will demonstrate the use of the track chair. Then it’s off to hike! A park volunteer will also be on the hike and will have the ability to control the chair with an attendant control should the need arise.

Participants’ caregivers are required for individu-als with special medical needs or to aid in transfer. A checklist will be provided at the time of reservation to ensure a great time in the outdoors is had by all!©
