ABOUT THE AUTHORS

What we got right
o The CCM industry navigated the COVID-19 crisis without much impact
o Many camera trend is increasing mobile camera demand in 2020.
o ADAS and Viewing trend is increasing automotive camera demand in 2020.
o Market players continue to integrate vertically and increased competition throughout the market
o Introduction of new type of module e.g. iToF and dToF 3D sensing, and under OLED optical fingerprint (OFP).
What we got wrong
o Under-estimated the shipment of mobile &consumer and automotive cameras.
o Increasing demand on the smartphonemarket for low resolution cameras such as2Mp.
o The trade tensions between China and theUS has affected some mobile and CCMplayers, thus affecting the growth of saleshere and there
o CIS Pixel shrink race has reignited
o Over-estimated the shipment of under-display fingerprint.

WHAT WE GOT RIGHT, WHAT WE GOT WRONG
CCM forecast over the years
Growth momentum is maintained for CCM.
Status of the Camera Module Industry 2021 | Sample | www.yole.fr | ©2021
Yole has maintained its forecast for camera modules (CCM) due to sustained demand for smartphones and other main applications such as automotive.
Growth potential is maintained at a high level for the 2021-2026 period, mostly driven by the proliferation and diversification of cameras per end system.

The resolution goes up high and the module costs high too. The main rear camera, which are integrated with high resolution CIS, OIS and AF, even with periscope type lens…the whole module price is over $20.
As a rule of thumb, the price of a module is around $0.52 per Mp for the mid-range, and $0.41 per Mp for the high-end range.

In 2020, 853M consumer electronic devices were sold worldwide. Our forecast is for 1,284M units by 2026.
Smartphone dominance explains past declines -but with new smart devices entering the market, the plateau is ending.
People are working from home, kids are learning online, laptops and tablets are booming because of COVID-19 in 2020, but that won't last for years to come.

AUTOMOTIVE CAMERA MARKET FORECAST
Automotive camera penetration
In 2020 therewas 1.4 cameras per car in average
Status of the Camera Module Industry 2021 | Sample | www.yole.fr | ©2021
In the past, the biggest part of growth was for viewing applications.
Future growth will be higher for ADAS.
With the rebound of automotive sales, the volume of cameras will enjoy double digit growth.
The general trend is a 14.8% CAGR, while ADAS cameras will lead growth at 16.8% CAGR.

MOBILE TECHNOLOGY TREND
The “lens number” issue
Plastic lenses have become a key component of the CCM assembly.

courtesy of Sekonix
Optics complexity has forced suppliers to develop automated assembly.
Mobile optics are made with plastic lenses, usually a mix of ZEONEX and PC. The exception is for WL-CCM, which uses glass lenses.
The thickness of each individual lens has become a limiting factor. To answer this need, Zeon has developed a specific polyolefin.

MOBILE TECHNOLOGY TREND
OIS innovation – from lens-shift to sensor-shift
Traditional Optical Image Stabilization
In traditional OIS, coils are used to apply
forces to magnets that are affixed to the lens
barrel, which causes the lens barrel –magnet
assembly to move. This allows the optics to
correct for hand-shake during long
exposures.
Sensor shift Optical Image Stabilization
In Apple’s Sensor
shift OIS, the lens barrel
magnet assembly is fixed,
and these same forces
move the image sensor.
