Overview as of April 2008

First steps of Step I: Most efforts in beam line and infrastructure. Beam and basic infrastructure reaching completion-- Beam line magnets installed, getting powered-- Control system and DAQ operating -- Target operation has been successfully demonstrated -- First beam particles through (partial) beam line -- Radiation surveys -- Measurement of particle rates (Scintillators, Cherenkov) protons and pions.-- About 1010protons hit the target at each dip for BLM 8.1 at 50mV This is two orders of magnitude below the targeting assumptions for reaching 600 good muons per target dip.

Remain to complete: -- cool down and operation of decay solenoid (to start on April 21)-- rebuild of targets to ensure more reliable operation (need two targets) -- completion of hall floor and magnetic shieldingCompletion of TOF0, TOF1 and delivery at RAL with KL end of April. ==> run full step I in June-July 2008

April 2 2008 FIRST PIONS SEEN IN MICE!

The two Cherenkovs (Mississipi) situated at the end of controlled area were powered on April 2. Threshold 240 and 280 for pions respectively. 480 is well above.

A few pions were seen!

Proton ratesThe 7-30 protons/dip observed correspond to 0.5-2 1010 protons intersecting the targetThe MICE assumed muon rate is 600 per target dip (one per second)This corresponds to 1.7 1012 protons intersecting the target during the 1ms

The old HEP target was dipping 1-2ms (at 7ms in the spill i.e. ~600MeV protons)At 50Hz and the Beam Loss Monitor max. was 0.2 Volts(sources, Dean Adams, Rob Edgecock)

Our target is dipping for an effective duration of about 2 ms so we should be able to recover a factor 100 without activating ISIS more than the old target. How do we go about this?

Conclusions - Status

Step I of MICE has started!

-So far we have been running the MICE target in mode consistent with parasitic running.

-Both dipoles have been powered and particles observed, incl. some pions.

- Rate of protons intersecting the target estimated. Value consistent with expected, but >= two orders of magnitude missing for MICE final operation.

-Need to successfully operate the second target, install TOF0 and TOF1 and KL and to complete the false floor and iron shield in order to complete stage 1 ==> June-July 2008.

Conclusions-II

-Step II should occur in the September-October run after the spectrometer magnet arrives (August).

-Steps III, III.1 should occur late 2008 or early 2009.

-Coupling coils (Harbin China, LBNL) and RF cavities (LBNL) construction schedule: first Coupling coil in spting 2009, first RFCC module Q4 2009 (step V) and second one a few months later (STEPVI)

-Focus pair order has been agreed, first magnet delivery expected in October 2009 (step IV) second spring 2010 (step V). Third module still in the air. SCHEDULE-DEFINING ITEM.
