THERE ARE NEARLY iwice as many nurses iitraining 1101,in the U*ted States aa °there were 11 years ago, according to
reports made to the Office of Education by the nurse-trainingschoolfi for the year 1930-31.
More than 100,000 student mums were reported enrolled by atotal of 1,844 schools. The Office of Education sent inquiry blanksto a total of 1,925 schools listed in the hospital number of theJournalof the American Medical Association and other sources. Statisticson triining of nurses were last collected by the irLiffice Of Educatioxifor the rear

SCHOOLS. 0 .This report for 1931 includes data for 89 more schools than reported11 years ago in 1920, and 47 more than in 1927. The 1931 data show 100,419 students in 'training for the nursingprofession, an increase of 45,958, or 82.7 per cent, over the null*reported in 1920 and of 29.1 peer cent over lhose stu(ring .in thisfield in, 1927. , Of the total number of BPI% only 0.84 per oat,are men.
Of the 97,907 studenta.in general hospi .1. 675, or 0.59 per cent,were men., ,of the 2,512 students connected "'th hospitals for theinsane 273, or 10.87 per cent, were win. courses fornursetwere reporCed by 42 general hospitals ani 23 hospitals for Asinsane.

- There were 25,971 graduates from schools for nurses in 1930-31 of* whiel 524 were trained iu Ospitals for the wire of the, insane. Of
the 361 nu*sraduates, 300 were from general hospitals and 61 fromhospitals for the insane. -

f The usual 'length otthe nume4rúaitJoour.e in general hospitalsis now three yeFs. The increase in tbe length of course is shown bthe fact that in"1927 only 815.6 per cent of tho schools reporting

The educational requirements for admission to nurse-trainingcourses have been steadily .rising. Most of the schools connectedpith general hospitals in 1920 required only one year 9f high-schoolwork. In 1927 °fully one-thitd required com s lotion ci¡ the (Whop
ool curriculum, 0ne4h11'd two years of hig :.6s ool work, and theother third, one year of high-school work. By 1930, however, 87per cent -of the schools connected with general hospitils requiredthe conipletion of a high-school course. When the question as tothe educational requirement for admission was answered by thewords. 'high school," the answer has been interpreted, as in previousyears, U.) mean the completion of a 4-year course.
Of the schools connected with hospitals for the insaile, 54 perstat required only one year, of high school for entrancç in 1920 butID 1930, 64 per cent required completion of a 4-year course foradmission.

NUMBER OF HOURS OP DUTY REQUIRED DAILYb.
The number of hours of duty required daily as a part of the nurse-training course in general hpspitals has been steadily &creasing forthe lase 35 years. In 1896 the 8-hour day was in feffect in leas than2 per cent of theysthools. By 1920 a third had reduced thlithumber ofhours of duty. to 8, and in 1931tw64hirds of the sckookrrequiredonly 8 hours.
In schools connected with hospitals for the inflow,'however, abouta fourth of the schools require 12 hours' duty and another fourth10 hours. A little less than a third require only 8 Slurs n duty.
