Statistics Camp 2017 Statistical Circle of University of Peradeniya “Statistics Camp 2017”, the annual educational camp organized by the Statistical Circle of University of Peradeniya was held on 14 th and 15 th of October for the third successful time at Sanasa Campus, Kegalle. The event aimed at providing undergraduates an opportunity to practice teamwork using a series of both indoor and outdoor activities. The whole program was lined up in a way which ensured development of team skills, ability of working with goal congruence, achieving goals through division of work and time management. The event provided a golden opportunity for potential future statisticians, to apply the statistical theories and methods they learn within the class, in analyzing practical scenarios at hand. A group of 49 students comprised of third and fourth year undergradutaes from Department of Statistics and Computer Science participated at the event. The students were divided into 6 teams “Pareto, Weibull, Kent, Rice, Lomax, Gumbel” as each team included one academic staff member and one supporting staff member. The camp officially marked its commencement with inauguration ceremony held at the Sanasa Campus premises with the graceful participation of the Academic staff members of the Department of Statistics and Computer Science and two invited resource persons to the event, Mr. D.J.C. Sooriyaarachchi (a former Senior lecturer at University of Kelaniya) and Mr. Gayan Dikkumbura (Export Promotion officer, Sri Lanka Export Development Board). After the inauguration ceremony, group activity commenced. Each group was given a case study, and was asked to present a comprehensive statistical analysis on the given topic in the form of a presentation. It was evident that the students vehemently enjoyed the whole process of empirical application of class taught statistics theories in real world scenarios. After the lunch break, a discussion session was conducted by Mr. Lawrance Madapatha (Executive Director at Board of Investments Sri Lanka) on the topic of Industry Opportunities post graduation. The first half of the talk comprised of sharing knowledge about vast job opportunities in corporate sector where as the second half of the talk comprised of facing an interview properly. The event was an immense success because it delivered insights on evaluating options when deciding on a career path. Conclusion of the first day at the camp was marked by the vibrant campfire held with the active participation of many students and commendable support of the whole audience by means of cheering, singing along and congratulating. Quiz competitions, debate competitions, and drama time occupied the morning session of the second day. A major significance displayed in all the events was that, all the activities were based on Statistics. An energetic and gripping event, the Treasure Hunt took place after the lunch break. It was evident the students had a memorable time hunting the treasure by solving statistics questions. Winding up of the two day camp was marked by the Awarding ceremony held with the presence of the Dean of the Faculty of Science and the Head of the Department of Statistics and Computer Science. Best Speaker, Quiz Master, Best Actor, Best Actress, Overall Winner and Runners-up were awarded Complimentary Prizes there. Everyone extended their heartiest congratulations to the Organizing committee led by Dr.Sachith Abeysundara, Senior Treasurer of Statistical Circle, for the successful completion of the event. 1
