Performance?

It is generally believed that Cost, Location, etc. are synonymous with Quality and Quantity.

For instance; it is evident that Public schools are cheaper to attend compared to their Private counterparts, but are there corroborative evidence when it comes to the performance of the Pupils in National Examinations?

Does the cost of School Fees, Location, School Age, School system and Type, etc. play any significant role in determining how well Pupils perform in WAEC / NECO? Also, are there any statistical evidence showing the effect of Location on Pupils performances?

Page 4: StatiSense ® - Wale Micaiah ©. What are those things that determine Students’ Performance?

Source of DataThe data used for this analysis was downloaded from www.schoolsinnigeria.com.

As at the time of this analysis; there were 460 Schools listed with the following information:

Location of School & Area, Name of School, School Fees, Year Founded, Curriculum, School System – Boarding / Day School type – Mixed / Unisex Population of Student / Teachers, WAEC results for most recent 3 years, Total Enrollment for WAEC, Total Pass & Percentage, Result of Best Student for each year

Page 6: StatiSense ® - Wale Micaiah ©. What are those things that determine Students’ Performance?

Of this 460 schools; only 234 have WAEC results available for 3 years and were used for the study. Two Variables were derived from the result; Quantity of Passes & Quality of Passes (Best Result Analysis)

Quantity of Passes : Implies the percentage of Pupils with passes compared to the total enrollment for WAECQuality of Passes : Implies the degree of passes based on the Best Result. Results are provided in A, B & C; a Candidate with 5A’s is regarded to have performed better than one with 3A’s.

Each Best Result is converted as follows:

3A’s, 4B’s, 1CLet A = 5, B = 4, C = 33*5 + 4*4 + 1*3 = 15+16+1 = 32

A candidate with 3A’s, 4B’s, 1C is converted to 32 using the substitution as illustrated

Page 7: StatiSense ® - Wale Micaiah ©. What are those things that determine Students’ Performance?

This conversion is done so as to get a statistic which measures the quality of Pupils result.

See Sample data below:School Name Best Result Quality of Pass

The analysis so far seek to establish the relationship between “Schools’ Best Result ” over 3years against: Location of School,

School System – Boarding / Day, School type – Mixed / Unisex, School Fees, Curriculum, Year Founded

The top 3 schools are located in Abuja, Abia & Adamawa On the average Day only school system perform better The performance of Mixed schools are far better than single

sex; in fact, only one Girls only school emerged in the top 47 schools

Schools with high fees show no academic advantage over their low-paying schools

Nigerian Curriculum still stand as the most preferred, 35 of the 47 schools use Nigerian Curriculum.

Academic performance & Age of school show indirect relationship; marginally, the younger the school, the better the performance

Page 18: StatiSense ® - Wale Micaiah ©. What are those things that determine Students’ Performance?

Quantity of ResultHow many Students Passed?

%

Page 19: StatiSense ® - Wale Micaiah ©. What are those things that determine Students’ Performance?

The Quantity of Result is about the number of Students who obtained at least credit passes in WAEC.

Why is this important? While it is admirable to produce the best result, what percentage of the entire student also achieved success? This analysis, like the foregoing, seeks to establish the school with the best performance measured against Location, School system, Type, Curriculum, Year founded and School Fees.

Which would you rather prefer; enroll your Children/Wards in the school with the Best Result or the School with the best quantity of Passes or both?

Whatever is your decision, in a short while you will find statistical evidence for or against it.

The following observations were made from the analysis of Students Pass Rate against:

Location of School, School System – Boarding / Day, School type – Mixed / Unisex, School Fees, Curriculum, Year Founded

Nine of the top 17 schools are located in Lagos On the average Day school system perform better The performance of Mixed schools are far better than single

sex; 1 Girls only and 3 Boys only schools emerged in the top 50.

Schools fees seems to matter when it comes to consistency in academic performance

Nigerian Curriculum is the most preferred; 30 of the 50 schools use Nigerian Curriculum beside those with Nigeria and others.

Academic performance & Age of school show indirect relationship; marginally, the younger the school, the better the performance

Page 27: StatiSense ® - Wale Micaiah ©. What are those things that determine Students’ Performance?

Conclusion: Location of School may not matter when it comes to Student

with Best Results; but it does matter for percentage of Passes.

Students who attend Day & Boarding Schools are most likely to perform better than Day or Boarding Only schools.

Mixed schools’ performance is excellent in both “Best Result” analysis and “Percentage of Passes”. None of Boys or Girls Only came close, however Boys Only perform better than Girls Only.

The relationship between School Fees and Performance is not well defined; though schools with high fees show more in top performance.

Nigerian Curriculum is the most preferred, either in “Best Result” analysis or Percentage of Passes.

In this analysis; Age is just a number when it comes to Performance. Younger schools really outperformed older ones.
