Introduction

Hymn:God of mercy and compassion,look with pity upon me.Father, let me call thee Father,tis thy child returns to thee.

Jesus, Lord, I ask for mercy,let me not implore in vain:all my sins I now detest them,never will I sin again.

See our Saviour, bleeding, dying,on the cross of Calvary:to that cross my sins have nailed him,yet he bleeds and dies for me.

Reading:

Christ suffered for you, leaving you an examplethat you should follow in his steps.He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips.When he was reviled, he did not revile in return.When he suffered, he did not threaten;but he trusted to him who judges justly.He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree,that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.By his wounds we have been healed.For you were straying like sheep,but have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.(1Peter 2:21-35)

Let us pray:

Father in heaven,as we walk in the steps of your Sonand journey with him through his suffering and deathto the hope promised in his Resurrection,help us to follow his exampleand bear witness to his redeeming love.We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

First Station: Jesus is Condemned to Death

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Reading:

Pilate had Jesus brought out, and seated him on the chair of judgement at a place called the Pavement, in Hebrew, Gabbatha. It was Day of Preparation, about the sixth hour. Pilate said to the Jews: “Here is your king.” But they shouted: “Away with him away with him. Crucify him!” Pilate said: Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered: “We have no king but Caesar.” So at that Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(John 19: 13-16)

Prayer:

For the times we’ve judged others, Lord have mercy.For our willingness to follow the crowd, Christ have mercy.For putting ambition, career, and worldly success before faith in God, Lord have mercy.

Stabat Mater:

At her cross her station keeping,stood the mournful mother weeping,close to Jesus to the last.

Second Station: Jesus Receives the Cross


Reading:

During his life on earth, he offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.(Hebrews 5: 7-9)

Prayer:

For answered prayers, we give you thanks O Lord.For the times we’ve endured slights and hurts with patience, we give you thanks O Lord.For your promise of life without end, we give you thanks O Lord.

Stabat Mater:

Through her heart his sorrow sharing,all his bitter anguish bearing,now at length the sword has passed.

Third Station: Jesus Falls the First Time


Reading:

And yet ours were the sufferings he bore, ours the sorrows he carried.But we, we thought of him as someone punished, struck by God and brought low.Yet he was pierced through for our faults,crushed for our sins.On him lies a punishment that brings us peace,and through his wounds we are healed.(Isaiah 53: 4-5)

Prayer:

For lifting the burden of our sin and shame, glory and praise to you O Christ.For walking the path that we should have walked, glory and praise to you O Christ.For bringing us healing and hope, glory and praise to you O Christ.

Stabat Mater:

Oh, how sad and sore distressedwas that mother highly blest,of the sole-begotten One.

Fourth Station: Jesus is Met by his Blessed Mother

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise youBecause by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Reading:

As the child’s father and mother were wondering at the things being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Look, he is destined for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed - and a sword will pierce your soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.(Luke 2: 33-35)

Prayer:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Stabat Mater:

Christ above in torment hangs;she beneath beholds the pangsof her dying glorious Son.

Fifth Station: The Cross is Laid upon Simon of Cyrene

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise youBecause by your holy cross you have redeemed the world

Reading:

As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.(Luke 23: 26)

Prayer:

For the difficulties and trials that face us, grant us courage, O Lord.For the times we should stand up for what is true and just, grant us courage, O Lord.For times of temptation, grant us courage, O Lord.

Stabat Mater:

Is there one who would not weepwhelmed in miseries so deep,Christ’s dear mother to behold?

Sixth Station: Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus


Reading:

Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you? When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you?And the King will answer: “In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.(Matthew 25: 37-40)

Prayer:

For the times we have neglected those in need, Lord have mercy.For the times we have turned away from the homeless, Christ have mercy.For the times we have seen poverty as someone else’s problem, Lord have mercy.

Stabat Mater:

Can the human heart refrainfrom partaking in her pain,in that mother’s pain untold?

Seventh Station: Jesus Falls the Second Time


Reading:

I am twisted and bent double,I spend my days in gloom.My loins burn with fever,no part of me is unscathed.Numbed and utterly crushedI groan in distress of heart.(Psalm 38: 6-8)

Prayer:

For your gift of healing and wholeness, we give you thanks O Lord.For the forgiveness of our sins, we give you thanks O Lord.For saving us from ourselves, we give you thanks O Lord.

Eighth Station: Jesus Consoles the Women of Jerusalem


Reading:

Large numbers followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him. But Jesus turned to them and said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather for yourselves and for your children. For look, the days are surely coming when people will say, “Blessed are those who are barren , the wombs that have never borne children, the breasts that have never suckled!” Then they will begin to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us”. For if this is what is done to green wood, what will be done when the wood is dry?”(Luke 23: 27-31)

Prayer:For our lack of compassion, Lord have mercy.For our hearts of stone, Christ have mercy.For our failure to love and let ourselves be loved, Lord have mercy.

Stabat Mater:For the sins of his own nation,saw him hang in desolation,till his spirit forth he sent.

Ninth Station: Jesus Falls the Third Time


Reading:

Since in Jesus, the Son of God, we have the supreme high priest who has gone through to the highest heaven,we must never let go of the faith that we have professed. For it is not as if we had a high priest who was incapable of feeling our weaknesses with us; but we have one who has been tempted in every way that we are, though he is without sin. Let us be confident, then, in approaching the throne of grace, that we shall have mercy from him and find grace when we are in need of help.(Hebrews 4: 14-16)

Prayer:

For loving us when we fail, we give you thanks O Lord.For picking us up and making us whole, we give you thanks O Lord.For reconciling us to yourself, we give you thanks, O Lord.

Tenth Station: Jesus is Stripped of His Garments


Reading:When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus they took his clothing and divided it into four shares, one for each soldier. His undergarment was seamless, woven in one piece from neck to hem; so they said to one another, “Instead of tearing it, let’s throw dice to decide who is to have it.” In this way the words of Scripture were fulfilled:

They divided my garments among themand cast lots for my clothes.

That is what the soldiers did.(John 19: 23-24)

Prayer:For the times we have stripped others of their dignity, Lord have mercy.For the times we have failed to value family and friendships, Christ have mercy.For the times we caused division and conflict, Lord have mercy.

Stabat Mater:Make me feel as thou hast felt,make my soul to glow and meltwith the love of Christ my Lord.

Eleventh Station: Jesus is Nailed to the CrossWe adore you, O Christ, and we praise youBecause by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Reading:When they reached the place called the Skull, there they crucified him and the two criminals, one on his right, the other on his left Jesus said: “Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.”(Luke 23: 33-34)

Prayer:Our Father,who art in heaven,hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come.Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily breadand forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptationbut deliver us from evil.

Stabat Mater:Holy Mother, pierce me through,in my heart each wound renewof my Saviour crucified.

Twelfth Station: Jesus Dies on the Cross


Reading:Though he was in the form of God,Jesus did not count equality with God something to be grasped.Rather he emptied himself,taking the form of a slave,being born in the likeness of people.And being found in human form,he humbled himself and became obedient unto death,even death on a cross.Therefore God has highly exalted himand bestowed on him the name which is above every name,that at the name of Jesus every knee should bowin heaven and on earth and under the earth.And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lordto the glory of God the Father.(Phil 2: 6-11)

Thirteenth Station: Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross


Reading:See, my servant will prosper,he shall be lifted up, exalted, rise to great heights.As the crowds were appalled on seeing him -so disfigured did he look that he seemed no longer human - so will the crowds be astonished at himand kings stand speechless before him;for they shall see something never toldand witness something never heard before.(Isaiah 53: 13-14)

Prayer:For your suffering and death, we give you thanks O Lord.For your cross and Resurrection, we give you thanks O Lord.For calling us to be your faithful witnesses, we give you thanks O Lord.

Fourteenth Station: Jesus is Laid in the Tomb


Reading:

When it was evening, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, called Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be handed over. So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean shroud and put it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of rock. He then rolled a large stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away.(Matthew 27: 57-61)

Prayer:Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spiritas it was in the beginningin now and ever shall beworld without end, Amen.

Stabat Mater:By the cross with thee to stay,there with thee to weep and pray,is all I ask of thee to give.

Prayer Before the High Altar

Reading:

We had all gone astray like sheep,each taking his own way,and the Lord burdened himwith the sins of us all.Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly,he never opened his mouth,like a lamb that is led to the slaughter-house,like a sheep that is dumb before its shearers.

His soul’s anguish overhe shall see the light and be content.By his sufferings shall my servant justify many,taking their faults on himself.

(Isaiah 53: 6-7, 11)
