Pre-measured 3 m (9.84 ft) walkway from feet of chair to cone placed at end of walkway

Participant is to start with back to chair and arms on armrests May allow a practice trial Instruct as follows, “On ‘go’, stand and walk 3 m, turn around the cone

and return to the chair and sit with your back against the chair.” Use assistive device if needed Record time to complete the test

B) 10 Meter Walk Test (Gait Speed) (Perera 2006)

Requirements/procedure for the test:

Pre-measured 10 m (33.38 ft) walkway Mark the first 2 m (6.5 ft) and last 2 m with masking tape to allow for

acceleration and deceleration Time starts and stops when participant crosses 1st and 2nd 2 m mark

respectively Allow for 2 trials for best reliability Instruct participant to walk at comfortable (preferred) pace for 2 trials

then at fast pace for 2 trials. Use assistive device if needed Record time to complete the test Divide the distance (10 m) by time to complete: 10 m / “x” seconds = m/s

Equipment needed for test:

14 m walkway (rolling measure) Masking tape Gait belt Stopwatch

Station #2 – Balance

A) Four Square Step Test (Dite & Temple 2002)

Requirements/procedure for the test:

Square formed with 4 straight canes (tips contacting each other) Participant stands in square 1, facing square 2 Instruct the participant to move through test in following sequence: 1-2-3-

4-1-4-3-2-1 Instruct the participant to complete the sequence as fast as possible

without touching the canes Both feet must make contact with the floor in each square The participant should face forward during the entire sequence. Allow for a practice trial. May repeat if the participant loses balance, makes an error in the

sequence or contacts a cane. The time starts when the first foot contacts square 1 and stops when the

second foot contacts square 1

Equipment needed for test:

4 canes Stopwatch Gait belt

B) Functional Reach Test (Duncan 1990)

Requirements/procedure for the test:

Participant is to stand with dominant acromion process at wall (mark height with masking tape)

Affix yardstick to wall at height of acromion and ensure yardstick is level Participant raises arm to 90 deg of shoulder elevation while standing

facing forward and feet a comfortable width apart Participant makes a fist and places the distal end of the 3rd metacarpal at

the “0” mark on the yard stick Instruct the participant to reach as far forward as possible, without losing

balance, touching the wall or taking a step. Record the distance. Perform 3 trials.

Equipment needed for test:

Yardstick Stick tack or double sided Velcro Gait belt

Distance (in) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3

Equipment needed for test:

Stopwatch Ruler Chairs (2) Step stool (average height – 4 to 6 in) Gait Belt

1. Sitting to standing 8. Reaching forward with outstretched arm 2. Standing unsupported 9. Retrieving object from floor 3. Sitting unsupported 10. Turning to look behind 4. Standing to sitting 11. Turning 360 degrees 5. Transfers 12. Placing alternate foot on stool 6. Standing with eyes closed 13. Standing with one foot in front 7. Standing with feet together 14. Standing on one foot Measure is available at http://www.uwo.ca/actage/conferences/conference2012/Berg%20Balance%20Scale.pdf

Station #3 – Muscle Performance & Aerobic Capacity

A) Chair Rise Test (Muscle Performance) (30 s – Rikli & Jones 2001); FTSS – Bohannon 2006)

Requirements/procedure for the test:

Use a standard height chair (46 cm; 18.1 in) placed against the wall Instruct participant to cross arms over chest On “go” instruct the participant to stand and sit again

o As many times as possible in 30 seconds – record # o Five times – record seconds

Equipment needed for test:

Standard height chair Stopwatch Gait belt

B) Heel Rise Test (Muscle Performance) (Hislop 1995)

Requirements/procedure for the test:

Instruct the participant to stand on non-dominant leg (participant may place hands on palms of the tester for balance)

Instruct participant to rise up on the forefoot (rate = 1x per 2 seconds) Record # of times up to 25 the participant can move through entire

available ROM* (*assess PF ROM first) Stop the test if participant:

o Pushes on tester’s hands o Flexes knee o PF range decreases more than 50% of initial range

Could test each leg independently for comparison
