An immunization letter was sent home to you from the Lake County Health Department regard-ing the immunization that your child will need to enter the 7th grade. The state of Florida requires a Tdap/Td Booster . The health department will be having an immunization clinic here at Tavares Middle School on April 26th. This clinic is free to you. We need you to complete and return the permission slip, if you have not done so, to the guidance department. Of course, you have the option of going to your own doctor, but this must be completed before the beginning of the new school year and

turned in to the guidance department as well. Seventh grade students may not start school without proof of im-munization. We hope you take advantage of this offer by the Lake County Health Department.

Fashion is important to students at this stage of their development. Through Patriot Pride and in conjunction with LCSB Policy, TMS is committed to teach our students an understanding that there is a time and a place for apparel styles. At TMS, students arrive dressed in a manner that is clean, safe, shows respect for the educational environment, and re-frains from distracting or offending other students. With warmer weather approaching we want to remind the students of the following prohibited items which are consistent with the LCSB Code of Conduct.

Sleeveless shirts (Shirts must come to the point of the shoulder.)

Tank Tops or those with spaghetti straps

Bare midriffs, sheer or see-through clothing

Backless shoes

Low-cut shirts/blouses with exposed cleavage

Exposed undergarments including boxer shorts and athletic shorts

Pajamas and slippers

Leggings, jeggings, tights, or skin-tight stretch clothing worn without shorts or a skirt no more than 5”

above center of the knee.

Oversized pants whose waistband falls below the hip with or without a belt

Hats, hoods, bandanas and scarves that cover the head except those for religious purposes

Clothing that advertises drugs, alcohol, gangs, weapons, or tobacco products

Clothing with words, slogans, negative racial impact, or graphics that are offensive to others

Shorts, skirts, or tears in pants that are more than 5” above the center of the knee or mid-thigh

According to the LCS Code of Student Conduct (PP 11 & 12), students will receive a warning on the first offense. The second offense will result in the student not being able to participate in any school activities for 5 days. The third of-fense will result in the student not being able to participate in any school activities for 30 days. Students who choose not to comply with the dress code will participate in our OSI program until more appropriate clothing is brought to school. Avoid the hassle and arrive “School Cute” every day.

No mini-speakers on campus……..they will be confiscated.

No Athletic Equipment on campus…….footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, etc.

Backpacks must be placed in the students lockers during the school day.

Ball caps must be secured in students lockers until the end of the day.

Congratulations to Shannon Manning on winning TMS Disney Dreamers and Doers. She created a magnifi-cent project including the blankets she makes for the homeless and the tiny blankets she makes for the ba-bies in the NICU. Shannon will participate in the state wide competition. Good Luck Shannon!!!

The cafeteria ladies “deliver” lunches to the TMS students every single day. The Culinary Club de-cided to deliver lunch to the lunch ladies! The lunch ladies are really great as they work hard and maintain one of the most “sparkly” clean kitch-ens the students had ever seen! The students had fun making and delivering lunch to them… complete with uber cool hair nets! THANK YOU LUNCH LADIES!!!

Page 8

We had a successful 2016 trip to Washington, D.C. The students were able to experience all they have been studying for the past two years and that made our nations’ history come alive for many. One of the highlights of the trip included watching the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery where one of our stu-dents participated in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We also went to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum where several of our students met a survivor, Henry Greenbaum, who graciously spoke with us and told us his story. There are so many other neat and unique experiences

connected with this trip, it truly is a trip of a lifetime.

We want to congratulate the Tavares Middle School girls’ basketball team on making it all the way to the champion-ship game at Lake Sumter State College. They ended their regular season with a 9-1 record. They played hard throughout the season to bring them to the champion-ship game. And although they fell to East Ridge MS they worked together and gave it all they had and in the end they brought home the Lake County Girls Bas-ketball Runner up trophy. Congratulations on an in-credible season ladies! TMS and Coach K are very proud of you!! Mrs. Metheny and the ASD students are again working to gather, trim, count and check the expiration date of Box Tops. Please help us by collecting and donating your Box Tops for Education found on many food pack-ages. The money adds up quickly. Each one is worth 10 cents. You may bring them to the front office and we will make sure Mrs. Metheny gets them. Thank you for your generosity.

Pre-Arranged Absences

Excused absences tied to Pre-arranged absences must be approved 5 days prior to first day of the absence. All pre-arranged absences are to be of educational value or extenuating circumstances that have the principal’s prior approval in order to be ex-cused.

Parent Drop-off/Pick-up

For everyone’s safety and keeping to the regula-tions set by the State of Florida Dept. of trans-portation, all students are to be dropped off or picked up at the curb in front of the Main Building. If parents pull to the front and continue to pull forward as the line continues to move and until line stops; students will be able to enter/exit their vehicles quickly and safely. Students are not allowed to en-ter or exit vehicles from the parking lot or Lane Park Road. Walking students must exit through walking gate only.

Check Out Information

Due to the heavy traffic and cars lining up to pick up their children, we ask that you not check students out after 3:40pm and 2:40pm on Wednesdays. Thank you for your cooperation.

Five Key Strategies of Personalized Learning

The following information was taken from a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation/Rand Corporation report from November 2015 titled, “Continued Progress” and incorporated into information useful for Tavares Middle Schools progression to Personalized Learning. The five key strategies of personalized learning are as follows:

Learner Profiles: Teachers can use a variety of data to inform their instructional decisions. This information will be accessible to grade-level teams, students, and parents to form goal setting procedures and pathways.

Personal Learning Paths: Pathways will vary by student, teacher, and subject area. Each student

is unique and each student is entitled to an individualized learning plan, which will be deter-mined through data, assessment, and teacher recommendations.

Competency-based Progression: The goal of personalized learning is to have the students work

at their own pace and advance when they have mastered each of the Florida standards. The main focus TMS will have is to ensure that students’ progress through curriculum at an appro-priate pace.

Flexible Learning Environments: TMS will be working on learning time that is structured in a way

that is flexible and responsive to students’ needs.

College and Career Readiness: With this end goal in mind, TMS will incorporate ways to develop non-academic skills in preparation for post-secondary career paths.

Tavares Middle Robotics

Tavares Middle Robotics is for TMS technology students who want to advance and apply their understanding of STEM by designing, building, programming and operating a robot as part of the VEX IQ and VEX EDR robotics platforms(http://www.vexrobotics.com)

T.M.R. is looking for Community Partners to help provide the optimal resources necessary to expand our robotics capabilities at Tavares Middle School. Your donations will help offset the costs that my students can incur throughout the school year. Each VEX Robotics season requires teams to compete in different competition challenges and a STEM research project.

What Your Money Will Go Toward

Robotics Kits: Purchase more EDR kits ($1,000 each)

Extension Kits: Purchase special parts that allow for more sophisticated robots

Replace Components: Replace electronic components that go bad over time
